Those are all valid points... *IF* we were talking about the Source Engine. We're not though, we're talking about Half Life 2. Was the Source Engine impressive at the time? Yes, absolutely. I won't dispute that.
The only items on that list that have anything to do with the game are 1) the story and 2) the vehicles.
Let's start with the story. Even the quote you pasted says it, deep storytelling was nothing new to game...
Yes. HL2 is crap. Accept it.
I enjoyed the MGS games, but I agree with you. The entire series is way overrated. They're the only games I ever played where I felt the gameplay segments actually got in the way. Given that I'd play for 5-10 minutes only to be interrupted by a 40+ minute cutscene, I think even Kojima felt the gameplay was an annoying distraction from his hopelessly convoluted, nonsensical opus.
Uhm... "going by the huge fan base shows that it isn't overrated"
...
You realize that for something to be "overrated" it has to be held in higher regard than is deserved, right? This means it has to have a large fan base.
Nobody is going to say "Duke Nukem Forever is sooo overrated!!" because almost nobody *likes* Duke Nukem Forever therefore it *cannot by definition* be overrated.
Ok, I'm seriously not trying to start a fight here, but can you please explain what exactly HL 2 did that "brought the FPS to the next level"? Because I seriously can't think of anything at all. Also, when thinking of things, remember that Counterstrike was a mod to Half Life 1, *not* Half Life 2. Not that mods should have anything to do with the game in question, but since you mentioned it I thought I'd point that fact out.
I've never been a big fan of the MGS series. I really liked the underlying themes of the story and some of the characters are just fantastic, which is what kept me playing them, but I've always felt it's all just a bit too long-winded and *WAY* too convoluted.
That said though, that sequence (and yes, the fight with Liquid too), is pretty much the very definition of epic. There are a lot of things about the MGS games I'll be quick to argue about with its count...
"one of those games that's more fun to play than watch"
...
...isn't that true of all games by definition?
Yeah I was kind of hoping I'd see him get his teeth knocked out at the end. :(
My references to Crytek, Dice, Epic and Naughty Dog were all in terms of technology, not the differences of the experiences they produce. I felt I was pretty clear on that with the original comment, but here's the clarification for you.
I picked a 15 year period because in the last 15 years they've done bupkis. Most of the Quake games (all of them, actually) do fall in that period, you're right. But other than the first Quake, none of them have been particularly i...
Meh. It looks like it's shaping up to be a good game, no way to know for sure until we play it though.
That said, I'm not buying into the hype either, if only because I think id is one of the most overrated developers ever. Sure, they were the big dogs back in the day with Wolfenstein 3D, Doom (most overrated game *ever*), and Quake, but what have they done that's mattered in the last 15 years? Next to nothing, that's what.
While everyone else...
Correction: This is how you announce DLC for *anything.* *Ever.*
Don't get me wrong, I am absolutely stoked for this game, maybe my most anticipated upcoming release... but how the hell many characters are going to be in this? We've got Two Face, Penguin, Croc, Black Mask, Joker, Hugo Strange, Riddler, Scarecrow, Harley Quinn, Zsasz, Poison Ivy, Mr. Freeze, Calendar Man, Solomon Grundy, Bane... and those are just the ones I can think off the top of my head that have been confirmed.
Seriously... this game is either going to be *HUGE...
Eh, I don't think that's a very good idea. In fact, I'd go so far as to say that's a horrible idea. *You* think it's a good idea because you've played Oblivion and mostly know what to expect from Skyrim. New players though? They're going to play a one dungeon demo and think "uhm... really? this crap is what people are excited about?" and pass on the game.
The Elder Scrolls games are not the sort of thing you can condense into a single dun...
"at the time of this reply I have 19 agrees."
Uhm, no... oh, wait... I see what you did there. Cheeky monkey.
I disagreed because I agree. Just following instructions.
Agreed. I never played this game when it first came out but I've been waiting for the HD remake for a while now to see what all the hubbub was about. When I finally got my hands on the demo I was so irritated by the lack of y-inversion that I couldn't even finish and won't be picking this up as a result.
I know it might sound a little shallow, but I know I'll have a hard time enjoying a game if I'm constantly fighting with the controls.
Yes. And also... who cares? FPS games are not the end-all be-all of gaming. Broaden your horizons people, there are tons of experiences out there just as good, if not better, than your beloved FPS games.
Variety is the spice of life and all that.
You're right, it's not the reason to buy the game.
However, this was initially advertised as being $10 off Skyrim if you purchased the Oblivion 5th anniversary edition. There was *absolutely no mention at all* that you would have to purchase a strategy guide in order to qualify for the $10 discount. For the people who pre-ordered and already received the Oblivion 5th anniversary edition (myself included), this is definitely an unexpected and annoying little surprise. ...
Agreed.
That said however, what exactly makes this particular exclusive preview with Game Informer any different than the countless other exclusive previews Game Informer and, dare I say, other magazines have had in the past?
I see nothing about this that makes it any different or noteworthy in any way.
What the hell is the big deal? This is common place, it has been happening for decades. It's nothing new. Get over it.
If "It's just another FPS" is reason enough not to buy a game then I can't wait to see PlanetXBox360's top three reasons not to buy Halo 4.
Here, I'll even write the first reason for them:
It's Just Another FPS - Don't you want variety? Aren't you getting tired of staring down the sights of a rifle? With games like Batman: Arkham Planet and Elder Scrolls VI: Holy Crap More Dragons on the horizon, there's plenty of var...
