This is much more interesting than a format war.

I think some real research could be done this way, considering you have a large group, and a huge variety of people play WoW, making it a very random group.

I hope Blizzard goes along with a few studies, with diseases being spread different ways, restricting contract sometimes and not others, different latency periods, and different levels of damage.

Sure, its just a game and that would have to be ta...

Do graphics matter? Yes. If a game for the 360/PS3 (take your pick, whichever you personally think has better graphics) had a game that looked like something on SNES/Genesis, but it was a great and fun experiance, would it bother me? Heck no.

I've said it before. It's not that graphics are unimportant, its that for 15 years, graphics have been good enough.

I'm also not sure why this guy says the Wii isn't graphicly powerful. I must have missed the memo that ...

Who knows who all will have a piece of this.

A university has a lot of people around on a lot of topics. Doctors in multiple fields might have a look at it, though, unfortunately, results from as many people on the physical effects (like hormones)can't be looked at for as many people or types of games as this research hits.

What are the odds in Vegas of the 360 dropping below 2000 next week.

Whatever they are, I'm in!

Unless the 360 really blew everyone away, it also looks like the Wii is king, now, since just those sales put it ahead of the 360 by vgchartz (though this whole month has been/will be too close to call).

The DS is crazy. I thought everyone in Japan already had one! It may outsell the PS2 if Nintendo sticks with it for 7 years!

Most consumers want the best price.

I know I do, so I'll not even consider bluray for a while. HD DVD is right at the upper edge of what I'll consider for the cheapest players.

Consumers don't often want to give more for the same thing, so I don't see the conflict.

I know how you feel.

I hate Disney, for the same reason. I won't get to watch Pirates 3 in HD.

All of the exclusive studios are losnig money, so I have to get some movies on DVD, or just skip them all together. Just to send a message, though, I'm not getting any bluray excluive studio's movies, because by being exclusive, they're basicly saything they don't want my business.

Same for the HD DCD studios for anyone who owns bluray.

I don't know if its the fact that wide screen gets to see less for most people. Zooming in will always make something look worse.

To me, its the fact it is something so small. We're not talking about adding hours of gameplay. We're not talking about fundamental changes. We're talking about making widescreen the way they stated they would.

It shouldn't have been a big deal. It shows inability to do the simple things, and if someone can't write a paragraph, I'...

So many people on the thread (link in the article) are saying they won't get it until the problem is fixed.

I don't get it, really. I actually was planning on getting this game, though my computer is bearly able to handle it, but now, no.

My theory is that if you release an unfinished game, even if you release patches for it, I'm not getting it. Cutting off the top and bottom for widescreen is pretty sad...poor excuse for wide screen.

They can fi...

As much as I would like to agree with that, seeing as the PS3 had their sixaxis controller gimmick after they saw what the Wii (then Revolution, still) was doing, I must disagree.

It's not important to be on the cutting edge of technology to be next gen, but it often is (such as the 360 graphics or the Wii's use of accelerometers), but no one would deny the PS3 ots its games are next gen, just because it doesn't match the 360 or Wii in gaming advancements.

I thin...

Interesting article. As I went though the last section (I did take it) I thought about how different my answers would be based on different games.

I thought of Starcraft, which results in totally different answers than if I had said, for instance, Legend of Dragoon, because they, to me, are pretty much total opposites in why I play, but both of them are two of my favorite games.

Two things.

First, he went and saw someone with his own money. I wonder if he might have used a little more of his own money to get a clean bill of mental health.

Second, the simple fact that multiple people obviously wanted him checked out for a mental illness says a lot. If someone wants you to go see a spychologist, it means they think there is something wrong.

The Wii is becoming to Japan what Starcraft is in Korea. You know, something that will eventually slow down in sales because everyone got 2 for themselves and one for their dog.

Seriously, the Wii's numbers are just...insane. It's too bad Nintendo can't get the parts the need to increase production. I wonder if that means all the little companies that make the pieces that go into the Wii can't keep up with demand, either.

I think the holidays will be interesti...

Exclusive either way lose money.

I would love to see Pirates 3 in HD, but its comming out on bluray, and I'm not ready to drop the cash for a bluray player until they get down to about $150.

So, as we can see, Paramount isn't the only one losing money, but Universal, Fox, and Disney are, as well, by being exclusive.

Price is a major factor, which may now decide the outcome, since Paramount has 2 holiday seasons with HD DVD, and it, alone, can stand...

More potential problems.

And people thought bright sunlight directly into the Wii sensor bar was a problem.

Now I'm going to have to worry about anyone moving near me, maybe even turning on lights, and I don't think I'd be able to play a racing game with it, as simple as that is with the Wiimote.

This could be a disaster when/if it gets into peoples' home. It's has to be hard for this little thing to detect a person, and there are simply too many ...

Paramount could be making this war shorter. Before this, it was price vs content. HD DVD was cheaper but bluray had the studio support.

Now HD DVD has the better price and content is more or less equal. Paramount and Universal are a good match for the bluray excusive studios.

If Pixar, with or without Disney, goes neutral or HD DVD exclusive, the war could come to a swift end. Even if they don't, HD DVD now has the scale tipped slightly in its favor, whereas ...

I've made pro-bluray statements that get double digit agrees, but when I make a pro-HD DVD statement, it gets about as many disagrees.

I think all that says is that because PS3 comes with bluray, anyone who buys a PS3 will have a reason to defend bluray, even though HD DVD is cheaper for those of us who don't have a lot of money to throw at movies, and generally people agree that HD DVD has a slight edge in picture quality, though its not much.

What people don't ...

Bubbles for you, my friend. Wonderful post.

As for laws preventing this, I don't think so. Laws are a bit fuzzy in this area, but so long as the 3 didn't try to prevent any other company from making a console, it would be a lot like MS and Windows, or AT&T and telephone service. Both have had suits brought against them for being a monopoly, but so long as they aren't doing anything unreasonable, everyone just looks the other way.

Of course, it will never h...

Yes, Sony is just begging for more investigations and almost sure legal trouble be engaging in preditory pricing.

That is what you're suggesting, undercutting the HD DVD price advantage in order to force it out of the format war for the sole purpose of giving bluray the HD market all to itself.

I'm not sure where all preditory pricing is illegal, but I am 100% sure it is in the US and Canada.

60% of PS3 owners might buy a bluray player, because only 40% are aware that it can play bluray movies.

I'm not sure where I said any PS3 owners would buy a standalone player though. Please quote where I said that, before I said 60% of PS3 owners might buy one not knowing they already have one.

All I said was that Sony may have put their console out of reach of the average consumer with its high price for nothing, if bluray fails. Bluray players, all of them, i...

Maybe I would have found that if I was seriously looking, but I just glanced over a few prices and the bluray players I saw were going for around $500-700, with the cheapest HD DVD under $200, just bearly.

$400 is still pretty bad. Cut it in half and I might consider it, if I'm not missing out on any movies I might want. As it stands, I'm not even considering either, because of the exclusives. If there were no exclusives, I'd go out and get an HD DVD player, but so long as t...
