Unplug network cable?

Will happen sooner!

Anyone remembers the time when the 387 floating point processor was an external chip? It moved onto the CPU chip.
Now GPUs will make the same journey.

Little point in having more than 8 CPU cores, a lot of reason to have enormous floating point performance with low latency to tap into even on non graphics related applications.

Game consoles are running against your television.

During the lifespan of XBox 360 and PS4 _minimum_ TV resolution has gone from SD to Full HD (now some tries to sell you 4k).

Interestingly computer screens almost went the opposite direction as I had a difficult time to find a screen with over 1080p/60 when I had to buy a new one about one and a half year ago... (power of mass market - same LCDs/plasmas/... were used both in TVs and computer screens)

I wouldn't bet on XBox One ever catching up, but you do - good luck to you!

A. PS3 had a more difficult architecture
B. worse GPU
C. better CPU+SPU.
The difficult architecture made initial games worse.
The SPU let it catch up.
But XBox 360s better GPU kept the playing field equal.

A. XBox One has a more difficult architecture
B. worse GPU
C. most likely worse CPU+GPGPU than PS4.
The architect...

@goldfinger, CPU stands no chance in computations once GPGPU begins to be used.

Let the GPGPU do the simulations -> animations (i.e. it will first calculate what to draw and then draw it)
and suddenly you can do most of a game without CPU aid.

Suddenly the CPU will be free to handle user input, network protocols, NSA apps, ...

I think much changed once Nintendo released Wii U.

1) If both Sony and Microsoft started to move. Consoles EA really has to be on, their Wii U interest dwindled immediately.

It seems to have payed off. Very few developers are in time with their releases for PS4 and XBox One. But EA are ready!

2) Wii U is weaker than EA first thought. Its GPU is OK but its CPU sounds underpowered. Equals lots of work needed to
port...

In reality the world has quite soft textures.

When photographing cheap compact cameras often over sharp or over contrast the image.

XBox One is over the top.

But comparing to PC you see that PS4 indeed has softer textures. I wonder if PS4 plays single player completely of Blu-ray.
(XBox is know to have an option to install a texture pack)

Xbox 360 have a better GPU than the PS3.
PS3 had more CPU resources, but are harder to get at.

Xbox memory system is simpler, unified.
PS3 memory is split CPU, GPU. And then SPUs got some too.

Now

PS4 have a better GPU, equal CPU, unified FAST memory.
XBox One has a ESRAM that is most likely both to small and to slow* to make any real difference.

* Suppose you can use the ESRAM optimally. Everything th...

I think the ESRAM is to small...

ESRAM/RGBpixel is an interesting measurement.
(note: now days you often render with float or ints with more bits, and you need at least two frames concurrently outputting one rendering the other)

RBG 8 bits / color

720p: 32MB/(1280×720×3)=12 .1
900p: 32MB/(1440x900×3)=8.6
1080p: 32MB/(1920x1080×3)=5.4

With more bits per pixel, triple buffered (not un...

@ n4rc, crispier is not always better...

Cheap digital cameras often add lots of post processing sharpness to make it look sharper.

It pleases the eye - but it is not how the world looks like!

But I am not sure that is the only issue at hand.
XBox One has a big installable texture pack.
PS4 should be able to handle big textures better than Xbox one (the whole PS4 memory is a high speed texture memory)

It could...

"Once the game is booted up, we also make sure that Battlefield 4's brightness setting is set to its default 30 per cent - a factor which has relevance a little further on into this piece."

Wait a minute. BF4 has a brightness calibration screen to aid you in setting the right brightness... Were they playing with different monitors on the two consoles?

When entering a match the cloud system now have to decide what actual server to host the match on.

Or run a distributed hosting ADDING latency for all...
Creating a distributed game server without latency and consistency issues will not be easy. Think about it!

Ouch!

"While 32MB may not be enough to use something like MSAA to the fullest, with a smart memory management strategy it is possible to deal with that."

And the ESRAM is already to small so you need smart memory management? I have a feeling that games will grow even bigger, it won't lighten the burden of memory management...
