$840.35 at launch.
Here's sort of a history of cost vs. price in this Gamespot article.

When did PS3 R&D begin? Because that's the point where Sony started investing cash in the console. It was first announced at E3 2005, so they'd already started spending at that point. So realistically, from the date it was announced:
March 2006 - 1 year
March 2007 - 2 years
March 2008 - 3 years
March 2009 - 4 years
March 2010 - 5 years
Please tell me what you find erroneous in that logic. I'm confused why people don't get it. Sony started ...
The PS3 is in its 4th year at retail and Sony were burning through cash in R&D well before launch date. So the author isn't really off with the 4 year number. Sony has been spending cash on the PS3 platform for probably more than 5 years.
The valid point is that sooner or later the payback has to come. I'm sure it will. Profits from the PS2 are helping to offset any hardware loss the PS3 is encountering and at some point equilibrium is reached when the product reaches an econ...
There are examples of texture pop in on all consoles right now, unfortunately. The first Mass Effect was riddled with it, and both Assassins Creed and Assassins Creed 2 on PS3 have it. I chose PS3 for my Assassins Creed platform of choice, so I've seen it first hand.
Not sure I'd even bring it up when pulling out the old console measuring yardstick.
This would be worth talking about if the game didn't suck. It's clear that more time was spent polishing the PS3 version.
At least nobody should complain this time that 360 held the PS3 back.
I hope the 3D gamble pays off. I really do. But I still don't see it catching on and becoming mainstream. I guess time will tell.
Sarcasm is definitely lost on this crowd...
I guess gaming is srs biz.
Shouldn't be an issue since everyone that would download it had to buy a brand new, unmodded 360 back in November, right guise? I mean, Microsoft forced all of the modders and hackers to buy new systems and artificially inflated their sales totals in the process, so there's no way people would be able to play it even if they downloaded it.
You'd think people with the PS3 version would be happy. First they complained about some obscure multimillion dollar deal that would keep them from getting the DLC. Then they talk a bunch of crap because the DLC is only exclusive for 30 days.
I suppose you make some of the people happy none of the time. At least around here.
Just curious about what exactly was dirty about the deal.
Don't get dizzy from the spin, guys. We all really know this thing was built to capitalize on what the Wii does best. Heh, "hardcore" gaming.
Which console is sub-HD? I'm sure you can find examples of that on every single console out there, and if you can't I know that I can. But I won't get into list wars.
No sense letting go of a good thing. It's not like you can't find games that have entered their 5th or 6th iteration, even on a non-Microsoft console.
"I think people do that 'coz Media makes it sound like these games don't even exist on PC period."
Nah, they mainly just do it to troll Xbox 360 news. They think it discredits the 360 and makes the PS3 look better, but it just makes them look like tools for trying to start an argument over such a non-issue.
There's no way that God of War III will be the biggest game of 2010. The European and North American release of Final Fantasy XIII and the release of Gran Turismo 5 is going to eclipse God of War III. Traditionally hack 'n slash is a niche when you look at sell-through vs. install base. And I'm not talking about playing sales, I'm talking about consumer interest.
I think God of War III will be the most hyped game of 2010, though.
Can you even get a CRT any more?
So if I have a game running 1920x1080p on my PS3 then you're saying that it isn't HD? Please clarify.
Wow, I don't have a single Blu-ray that runs below 1080p. I don't know where you get yours.
And really, 720p was the HD sweet spot when PS3 released since the majority of HD sets were 480p/720p/1080i. 1080p wasn't even standard then and Blu-ray was just really getting its feet wet. So feeling disappointed because most games render at 1080p is curious. I don't remember any promise that 100% of PS3 content would be 1080p.
And what good is higher resolution with low-re...
Seriously? 360 can't do 720p? There are many games on the 360 that run at 720p. There are also many games on both 360 and PS3 that run at sub-HD resolutions. I understand wanting to defend the PS3. But that's not really a good way to do it.
This was a good column. I can't fault the columnist based on the context of the article. He's not an active gamer himself, nor is his wife. His kids are 7 and 4. Not having researched his purchase ahead of time I can totally understand what he's talking about.
I've returned stuff for many of the same reasons. I think in some ways this guy is smarter than a lot of consumers.
