You have no idea what you're talking about.
The PS4 is far better at off loading tasks from its CPU to GPU thanks to efficient use of GPGPU compute.
I also DOES NOT have to "stop the current render target to perform those other jobs" at all. It can preform all these tasks "out of order" and concurrently thanks to the PS4's "Asynchronous Compute Units".
Basically the ACE's queue all these GPGPU tasks (...
The PS4 is in no way "off the shelf" PC parts.
It's a highly customized system with a huge emphasis on ease of development and GPGPU compute made during its development.
A lot of the custom/unique hardware that was developed specifically for the PS4 will make it into the next generation of AMD video cards.
There are many articles that have done detailed analysis of the PS4 APU. Its very far from an "off the shelf" pa...
Sure it will.
Just like the Cloud will make the Xbox1 4x more powerful. Like the updated sdk and 8% extra GPU performance will allow all games to run 1080p 60fps. And just like DX12 will allow the Xbox1 to match the PS4 performance.
Just more MS PR BS. The fan boys will lap it up and spout random techno babble they don't understand and cry I told you so.
Whatever helps you sleep at night. Meanwhile in the real world. Multi plat games con...
Bha ha ha!
People need to do some research before they start posting misinformation and flat out lies!
To the people reading this crap. Ignore it all. Do your own research. You'll come to the same conclusion that we always have.
PS4 >>>> Xbox1 hardware. PS4 >>>> Xbox1 performance. This will never change.
Move on people. Do we really need to have this same argument every time some POS article is w...
But "Cloud Computing" is in no way exclusive MS tech.
Anything the Xbox1 can do with "Da Cloudz" SONY can also do on the PS4.
So any advantage that Cloud Computing will offer is rendered moot. Any platform (PC, WiiU, hell even Mobile Phones) can potentially enjoy the same benefits.
Another factor that people haven't really focused on is GPGPU compute capabilities. We are seeing more and more devs utilizing this tech...
You have a point that the Xbox1 Software (drivers, sdk, API) was unfinished at launch.
But that means little when the Xbox1 hardware is still much weaker than the PS4.
No matter how well optimised the Xbox1 software becomes, on a hardware level it still can't compare to the PS4.
Pretty much common sense really.
Did anyone (rabid fanboys excluded) really believe the Xbox1 would ever match the PS4 performance wise? It just makes no sense.
Hardware is hardware. Nuf said.
Great read. Give an interesting insight into how the PS4 hardware has allowed for game development to move in new directions.
I was most interested in the sections on GPGPU compute and how Sucker Punch utilized it. GPGPU compute will become more and more important in the future as has the potential to offload many CPU centric tasks to the GPU. This is important in a system like the PS4 that has a fairly weak CPU by modern standards.
It was also interesting...
Agreed! I haven't had a single instance of screen tearing either.
Maybe people don't understand what screen tearing is and confusing it for something else? What I don't know.
Wow awesomeness! Really shows Sucker Punch is listening to feedback from the fans!
Devs should take note.
Glad to see it selling so well. Much deserved!
Finally found time to fire up my Digial copy last night. Awesome game.
I've heard some people complain that the game was too repetitive. While I agree to some extent, I think that each encounter always feels unique and challenging. While you may end up doing some missions/tasks over and over. It never feels repetitive thanks to the fact that you are constantly unlocking new powers to try and these in turn l...
ND would have had all the high poly/res assets readily available from development of PS3 version. Developers alway create ultra high poly models and ultra high res textures to start with and then scale them to fit into the available resources and to hit the target performance.
ND have also stated that they have had the "Next Gen" version of their engine running on PS4 hardware "for some time". If this PS4 version of TLOU is almost ready for release then wo...
I'd buy it again on PS4 in a heartbeat! I still regularly fire up my PS3 just to play TLOU.
No! Just No.
The Xbox1 already has a custom very low level API.
Some of the features from DX12 will cross over to the Xbox1, when they update the Xbox1 API, but they will only net small performane gains, and mostly on the CPU side of things.
The CPU component of the APU inside the Xbox1 (and the PS4) only carries out a very small portion of the overall processing required to run a game.
CPU 110GFLOPS (Approximately)

Impressive! Congrats to Sucker Punch and SONY. I wonder what first week sale numbers will be? Do digital copies show up on the sales numbers?
I'm waiting until it's available as a digital download to purchase personally. I love not having to swap disks all the time.
I predict SONY selling the VR headset at a loss (PS3 style) with each new iteration becoming cheaper to produce and with enough volume, eventually turning a profit.
It's all about market saturation. If SONY can make it to market before the Oculous Rift and at a cheaper price with better hardware, then they will own the market. Even if it cost them $$ for the first couple of years, they'll make it back in the long run.
All they need to totally pwn is t...
I've been waiting 25yrs for this announcement! The PS4 is set to become my favorite console of all time. Not only is it set to finally deliver 1080p gaming with solid frame rates and high quality AA (something I've been waiting for since the PS3 was first released) but also affordable, consumer grade VR!
SONY are pulling out all the stops this gen! What else can they possibly have up their sleeve?
Bit of a "no brainer" right there.
It's basically common sense for a developer to "prefer" the console that is easier to develop for that also produces better results.
There might be the rare masacistic rock eater out there that loves the challenge of developing on slow overly complex hardware. But honestly, why wouldn't you prefer "better" hardware if, you had the choice?
Lols. Titanfall didn't convince me to buy Titanfall let alone a $500 console! If I didn't already own an X1 there is no way I'd buy one to play a mediocre game.
I played the beta on my dual 7870 gaming PC and decided to give it a miss. Was bored an hour in.
My X1 is back collecting dust in the cupboard under my TV. Maybe MS will release a game worth plunging it back in soon..... I hope.
In the mean time Infamous is only days away...
Of course it won't off 2x th the performance! That is just bollocks!
It will see gains yes. But they will be marginal. In a heavy CPU bound situation you might see a 2x performance gain. But the Xbox1 is more likely to be GPU bound in most situations.
And even if you do end up with a situation where its CPU bound. It will only be by a small margin. Increasing the CPU performance x2 is meaningless if the GPU is not able to keep up.
Any c...
