In terms of numbers affected, yes. In terms of overall employee count, not really. Microsoft had 221k employees as of 2022.
Exactly. Amazon laid off 18k yesterday. Riot Games laid off a bunch today, as did a lot of media sites like GameSpot. Sony will likely do the same, Nintendo too.
This is just the start of things to come, 2023 will be a bumpy year for gaming in general as consumer spending goes down.
GP as a project isn't big enough to cause 10k layoffs at the corporate level of a company like Microsoft. Most of the 10k are non-gaming layoffs.
Ultimately, GP revenue and Sony 1st party game sales combined are pocket change compared to the money that teams like Azure etc deal with.
Activision aren't part of Microsoft... so they aren't affected by this at all.
Also, it's 10,000 all across Microsoft, not in gaming.
I suspect the reviews for this may actually be 'okay', like 70-80, but that the user opinion will be far, far lower. This mismatch was visible in the demo - lots of outlets previewed it saying it was great, while users near universally panned the world and character.
I am interested to see the Digital Foundry though. The demo hit 720p resolution... I'm wondering if they fixed that. No game should be hitting 720p60 on a PS5.
My thoughts are with those laid off (inside and outside of gaming), hopefully they don't have too much upheaval and land new roles soon.
Unfortunately, this is the economy & world we live in currently. This isn't the first and won't be the last time we see layoffs and/or studio closures this year.
Layoffs are pretty common during economic downturns.
But the reality is, it will be ok for 99.999% of those @ Zenimax.
Why? Because one guy may have moved from one Xbox team to another Xbox team?
Huge news. Hopefully things don't change too drastically. But huge congratulations to the entire team at N4G, being acquired is reflective of a job well done.
p.s. I look forward to Christophers deposition at the FTC, EU & CMA!
In what world have Fortnite and Apex put a dent in COD?
Let’s see here, MW2:
- top selling game of 2022
- best selling COD game
- #1 played game on PSN and Xbox Live
- Biggest launch ever in PlayStation Store
It’s bigger than ever.
I really doubt this will be “more interesting” than the original. Nothing will meet or exceed the original, especially not a Bloober Team production.
So now we’re waiting on the 5-10 year rumored remakes of MGS1, 2, 3, 4 and Rising 2, great!
Also if there ever is a remake, not giving it to Kojima is criminal and I probably won’t support it.
It definitely appears the momentum is all with Xbox in 2023. Let's see if any of the confirmed 2023 games slip to 2024.
Agree on all points. I’d like to see them revisit the UI, they’ve sort of left it alone since launch.
Definitely agree on Quick Resume. That’s my number 1 ask. The convenience would be ideal.
The vast majority of people do multitasking nowadays… on phones and on PCs.
If copying a game in the background is too complex for you, the PS5 probably isn’t for you since to encounter this multitasking situation you’d first have to open it up and fit an M.2. If you can’t multitask in an OS this is way beyond you.
Also, Xbox has supported background transfers for years, never seen anyone complain that it’s too complicated. Zero reason why Sony couldn’t d...
Your 10 year old phone can play Elden Ring?
Why what?
@Crazy Zenimax games don’t generate any where near as much revenue as COD does on PS - and COD does it every year. Zenimax games are spread apart.
@Outside I’ve said time and time again I’m fine with acquisitions, it’s normal in this industry. You saw no complaints from me when Sony bought Bungie.
@crazy I want COD in GP.
Stretch goal… more regular Crash and Spyro mainline releases.
It's rough to see Ubisoft complaining about games not being successful etc, while they sit churning out the same games over and over again and leave obvious money sitting on the table by doing franchises like Splinter Cell wrong.
