"You're just here to argue"

I'm just here to post sensible replies that make sense from a business perspective ;)

Coming from the guy who's just here making weird comments/fantasies on every post about Xbox dying, about EVO killing Xbox and Sony acquiring EVO just to block Xbox - I'll take that as a huge compliment.

p.s. Sony obviously bought this for business reasons, not for 'lets go buy a company just to...

@nfrog Right, and how many consoles / games / subscriptions sold does that annual event for a niche area of gaming actually drive? Probably not that many. With 200m+ consoles out there across the 3 major companies, I'd bet not even 5% of them play fighting games or pay attention to EVO.

If I had to pick between EVO and Zenimax... I'd obviously rather have Zenimax. An e-sports event focused on one, reasonably small, genre of gaming is not likely to drive much in plat...

Then I may have just hit 'install' instead of 'buy' due to my lack of Japanese knowledge :P

List of games:

de Blob 2
Stacking
Costume Quest
Ikaruga
Sensible World of Soccer

Not huge games or recent games, but free is free, claimed! Thanks.

@crazyCoconuts

"maybe MS won't have to increase prices or force you to have Ultimate to get the premium games? I've been expecting 1 of those 2 things to happen. #2 has already begun..."

I must've missed something, which premium games do Ultimate subscribers get over normal subscribers? EA Play? I'd assume thats just because it's a subscription to a 3rd party service. Zenimax for example is included in the non-Ultimate sub.

Dang, if them ragging on the Xbone for years and years is being 'biased' - I'd hate to see them be unbiased!

@Darkborn Bit of a different scenario though. Microsoft were doing a huge acquisition which needed approval in the US & EU so couldn't really talk about exclusivity etc and had to play their cards close to their chest.

With EVO, this isn't a huge acquisition, and is a partnership between Sony & Endeavor/RTS, and is not going through the anti-compete approval process here in the US or in the EU. So they can already start speaking openly about their intentions...

I really doubt EVO generates much revenue for any console manufacturer... it's not like they are buying millions of consoles/games/subscriptions.

But that seems extremely unlikely anyway - it's a joint venture with Endeavor, not a 100% ownership by Sony - and EVO has come out and said they will continue to support the same platforms & games.

That's how I read it - and I see it in myself somewhat to be honest, when I get the game for 'free', I'm more likely to buy cosmetics or DLC packs etc. More so than if I already shelled out $60-70 for the base game - and a lot of that $60 doesn't even go to the developer, when compared to DLC/cosmetics.

p.s. I love your article summaries!

Huh? Does Microsoft even make any fighting games? The most recent one I can think of is KI from 2013...

The most important number:

PSNow has 2.2 million subscribers in 7 years.
GP/XCloud has 18 million subscribers in 3 years.

1. You pretty much just proved my point. Falconeer is an indie game made by one guy, and MS paid for marketing and game pass rights to have it on Xbox only (for consoles). The Medium isn’t an indie dev but was given money by MS to be on Xbox only (again, for consoles). Both of these games will clearly end up on PS5 and if MS hadn’t been throwing cash at them, it’s extremely likely the developer would have been on PS5 also on day 1.

There are of course some exceptions to the...

"some devs will most likely just make ps5 games and pc to not have to worry about that kind of downscaling and just make a game"

Ignoring the fact that PC needs extreme downscaling, this 'skipping on a platform' theory really only applies to small indie games. For larger games:

1. You pretty much need to be on all platforms to recoup your development costs. Xbox has a large userbase, too large to miss out on, unless your game is exclusiv...

Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos are both free. Only Atmos for headsets costs - and it’s Dolby charging for that so take it up with them.

So if the GDK is the secret sauce that makes save game migration work - how do all the 7-8 years worth of XDK games magically work? It’s almost like it’s an OS level feature and nothing to do with the GDK.

Also the Dolby thing you pay for on Xbox is for their headsets - normal Atmos is free and doesn’t need their app.

p.s. You’re talking to a developer who worked on XB1 and PS4 games and now works on XSX and PS5 games - so I know how the API’s work :)

1829d ago 1 agree2 disagreeView comment

Developers were not allowed to publish GDK games on Xbox One until June 2020 - it’s right there in writing. Meaning every game released prior to that date is an XDK game yet saves still migrate.

Fact remains save games migrating correctly is nothing to do with a couple of developers using the GDK early. All the XDK games also migrate saves without any user involvement.

This is clearly something that could’ve been solved at the OS level. You don’t need the...

Microsoft have a better platform / services / functionality / subscriptions. Sony have better exclusives.

They should just make a console together :p

So because gears is the first game to get it - we should just discard Dolby Vision entirely?

Dolby vision looks amazing when you see it. Glad it’s coming to console and Sony should add it into the PS5 at some point.

Dolby licenses makes sense since Dolby charge a lot for licensing.

Which platform charges for free to play? Nintendo Online I guess but no one buys that anyway :p

@IRetroUK it appeared in around June 2020. This means very few Xbox One games were actually developed on the GDK. No one releasing an Xbox one game in 2020 adopted an entirely new SDK a few months before release of their game.

Additionally Microsoft didn’t even let games release using the GDK on Xbox one until June 2020 ( https://www.reddit.com/r/...
