The HD standard is 720p, 1080p and 1080i and normally with an aspect ratio of 16:9 although there are other TV's/monitors with different aspect ratios but still keeping the vertical pixel height the same.
In addition, depending which country you are in the standard for frame rate is 50Hz (PAL) or 60Hz(NTSC) although most HDTV's will support both. PC monitors on the other hand are basically 60Hz minimum.
One very important thing to be aware of is the s...
Yes the latest consoles are underpowered in comparison to faster computers but to get a faster more powerful computer you care going to pay allot more.
Consoles have been designed with the mass market in mind and the common display hardware which is currently 720p/1080p/1080i HDTV's which have a refresh rate of 60Hz. Of course there are 4k UHD TV out there but they are relatively new to the market and they do a very good job of up-scaling.
No matter what...
You can get a development tool like "Unread Engine 4" which can hide the underlying libraries from you although it is possible to write additional software to call those libraries and even write "down to the metal" however that requires more resources.
If you purchase a game development engine, that engine may have cross platform components such that you can design a game and have it run on a variety of different platforms with minimal tweaking providing t...
As "CBaoth" said the game is not using DX12 it is using Unreal Engine 4 (UE4). Here is the cut from the article:
"DX12 support is not planned right now. For something like DX12 we rely on the support for it within Unreal Engine 4, and that support right now is not at the level where we feel we can properly utilize it for TSP. This is something largely out of our hands."
Using UE4 or any other development system actually hides the software ...
If you have ever played the game "Resonance of Fate"? There is a part of the game where you can put different clothing on your characters and the new cloths actually appear in cut scenes.
The selection of clothing (includes shoes, boots, belts, gasses) in this game is massive and there is no real world monetary cost to the player since you pay in game ruby's which you have to earn by doing missions or in the arena.
Even weapons in the game are c...
Personally I have been using "windows" long before Microsoft appeared on the scene. In fact it would be fair to say that billions of people have been using "windows" since cavemen cut a hole in their caves to let in the light and let out the smoke. :-)
As for graphical "Windows" that was envisaged by Xerox back in the 1970's and implemented mainly on Unix systems well before Microsoft release their version of "Windows".
Microsoft almost has a license to print money that is why they are liked and reviled by many world wide.
Personally I don't dislike Microsoft however I don't run any Microsoft products in my home although it would be impossible not pay them if you purchase a pre-built computer (aka The Microsoft Tax) and indirectly via their patents which any product that uses Android has to pay.
Still all my computers, consoles, smart phones and tablets don't hav...
Actually Microsoft's main revenue earner is MS Office, Visual Studio and Windows, however it does earn revenue from patents notably from products running Android. In addition there are other services which are owned by Microsoft that do turn over a healthy profit.
While gaming does make money for Microsoft it does not earn quite as much as what I have already mentioned.
I do agree that those games are a must for millions of PS4 owners.
Even though I am interested in all of them the two that have really garbed my attention are "Detroit: Become Human" and "Horizon: Zero Dawn" mainly because they appear to be new IP.
I am aware that "The Last Guardian" could be considered new IP but we have been waiting so long that I will believe it when I see it.
As for "Uncharted 4" th...
@NIX
No, PS2 to PS4 is not like moving from VHS to Bluray, it is more like moving from DVD to Bluray. Even today many people have older DVD movies that play acceptably via up-scaling and smoothing that consoles like the PS3, PS4, XBox360 and XB1 can do. Yes you can see the difference but that difference is not hugely significant.
I would agree if you said PS1 to PS3/PS4 is like moving from VHS to Bluray.
In my case I do have a backwards compatible PS3 and PS2 games played on that are graphically acceptable even when played on a 55" or larger HDTV. I do play them via my HDMI connection and some games will also play Dolby 5.1 sound.
There are also PS2 games that have a network component and if the servers are up and you have a BC PS3 then you can still connect.
Unfortunately PS1 games which all PS3's can play look very grainy on a large screen HDTV al...
Well that only works if you have a 4k/60fps monitor and a reasonable although not that expensive graphics card.
@ravencry
Now that is better enhanced than what I can display via my BC PS3 although it still produces acceptable output. Oh turn off those attack lines when you get the chance (great for noob's) the game is so much better again. Blast now you have given me a nostalgia kick.
For anyone who looked at the video that Tyrannosaurus ...
Players play older or retro games for many reasons, one of them is nostalgia because you possibly remember having an enjoyable time playing it originally and you want to revisit that experience.
Trophies are fine for those that want them, however we are talking about PS2 games and most but not all of us who still have a decent PS2 collection don't really care or if they do then they should expect to pay to download a PS2 plus trophies image of that game.
What I would like is the ability of the PS2 emulator on the PS4 to rip my PS2 game disk image to the PS4 hard disk and allow me to pay those games sans trophies via the PS2 emulator.
If Sony does...
You should know you can get large screen monitors for the PC that while not as large as probably the large HD or UHD TV in the living room they are still large enough to be very immersive .
Good grief my base mother board (less than US150) in my PC has 7.1 sound capability plus it can display 4k @ 30 fps.
This is not a criticism of you preferring your living room to pay a console game since I prefer console gaming in my living room on a 55" HDTV over PC ...
I definitely refuse to pay for PS2 games I already own, however for PS2 games I don't have and want to play I don't have any objection to paying a reasonable price for them.
Fortunately I do have a BC PS3 and when that dies I will probably repair it or I will use PC emulation although that will mean purchasing a DVD drive. Oh yes about $20 is going to break the bank. :-)
@Tapani
I probably fall into that 1% and I don't pirate games. If I don't have a game and I want it then I either buy new or get it second hand.
Still I do have a PAL region BC PS3 which will let me play to compensation most of my sixty plus PS2 games (three have issues but you won't see the problem till you have played for over 10 hours).
A remastered game is one that has had it's software changed and recompiled for a diffe...
Blast! now I will have to get a DVD player for my PC. :-)
Still it's better than paying to play the games you already own. In the interim I do have a backwards compatible PS3 sitting right next to my PC and it does fully play all but three of my sixty plus PS2 games.
Personally I don't have any problems with Sony charging a reasonable (this is subjective) price for PS2 games that you don't already own.
What would be nice is if th...
You are quite right, in-fact all games are subjective to the player who plays or doesn't play them.
I do think over hyping a game does not help since some players are turned off and don't buy or play the game but are disappointed that it did not live up to the hype and their expectations even though overall many people enjoyed it.
I have not played The Witcher 3 or even Bloodborne yet since I don't have a PS4 for a variety of reasons and cost is n...
I do agree that frame-rate and resolution are important however you need to look at the combination of graphics card as well as the display device and their combined performance.
Consoles are designed for mass market TV's which currently are 720p, 1080p and 1080i with a refresh rate of 50/60Hz depending on your country although most modern HDTV's support both. Of course there are TV's with higher refresh rates.
Yes there is UHD (4k) with a minimu...
