Yes it's called Embrace, Extend, Extinguish or the the three E's.

Since you have an Intel CPU the only upgrade is to an i7 however you have to be careful.

The current Skylake (6th gen) chipset (Z170) is not compatible with Broadwell (5th) and Haswell (4th) but the latter two are relatively compatible.

If you want the latest Skylake chipset then you will need a Z170 motherboard which is not compatible with older Intel generation processors. Some Z170 motherboards will support DDR3 however you would most likely be better off ...

You must have a PC of some sort to post on this forum be it smartphone, tablet, laptop or desktop.

I will concede that you could even post on this forum using a PS3. PS4, Xbox360 or XB1 but it would be more painful unless you have at least a keyboard. Still it is doable.

I run a Linux OS on my desktop and any other OS's I run are in virtual machines. You can install SteamOS quite easily under most Linux distributions although you can do the same for Microsoft Windows. Performance of course is dependent on your hardware.

It would not be hard to actually to develop a SteamOS application to run on the PS4 and XB1 for that matter with performance being that of a mid range PC. I can't see that happening for the XB1 although it may be possi...

Monitor or TV aside I can actually take my Desktop PC on the road since all I need is my wireless Keyboard&mouse plus a standard power cable as well as a HDMI cable.

Of course my PS4 is about a sixth of the size of my desktop although if you look inside the PC case, it is mostly empty space.

One feature that I was very pleased with is that my PS4 controller works perfectly when connected via USB cable to my PC (I have not tried wireless yet).

So the Hogwarts School of Magic is now working for Microsoft, I never knew. /s

Kidding aside. Yes you can get an external GPU however it would also be allot cheaper and much more efficient to actually build a machine with a decent GPU. I won't deny that the thunderbolt connector is fast but you still need an external power supply for the GPU.

I don't have an XB1 and will never get one. I do have a very powerful PC though and a PS4. I can switch between them in seconds.

As for my main operating system I run Linux (Fedora 23 to be precise) however I can run other operating system's including Microsoft's under virtualization and I do have legitimate licenses. By doing this my main operating system is pretty much protected since I can recover an virtual OS in a few minutes. Even if my main OS was hacked (i...

If you want a decent gaming PC then I would strongly suggest using the Skylake chipset (Z170) with an i5 or i7 processor and 16GB of DDR4 memory if you want to be future proof. In addition you also need to include the price of a decent monitor (say 28" 4k 144Hz) as well as a graphics card that will complement it.

As for disks I do recommend a 60GB to 250GB SSD as your system disk and a 2 to 3 TB 3.5" 7200 rpm disk as your main storage.

Don't for...

You can already buy an upgradable XB1 equivalent. It's called a PC running Microsoft Windows 10.

If you are a technical person who is also good with a decent soldering iron you can change the components of the XB1 or even the PS4 for that matter.

The problem with making changes to any console is firstly you void your warranty and secondly the machine may not work since the BIOS and software will probably not recognise the changes.

I have stated before the only way you can change the current XB1 and PS4 is to desolder and resolder appropriate components a...

The basic mechanism of upgrading a smartphone is to actually replace it with a newer or different model and not actually upgrade the hardware of the original model.

If you have a smartphone on a contract (say 2 years) with a particular carrier then after 2 years why not replace it since in many cases the overall contract cost does not change or if it does the price increase is normally fairly minimal.

Future proofing a PC means chip-set compatibility over an acceptable period of time. Changing the chip-set means a change in most components especially the motherboard.

Look at any desktop motherboard and you will see a socket for the CPU and slot connectors for memory, graphics card(s) ... etc, in addition you will see a mixture of sockets and connectors for power, storage and other peripherals. Basically having this type of layout allows for upgrades.

I don't know if you are aware but the only PC that is fully upgradable is the the Desktop. PC's such as laptop's and tablets have limited upgrade capability which for most is storage and memory.

Even Desktop PC's are limited to their chip-set compatibility. Going from one chip-set to another usually requires a motherboard change and all the ramifications associated with that with some being cheap and others much more expensive.

When did PC's stop being hot?

Desktop PC's are probably the most configurable of all personal computers although you have be aware of upgrade paths and be prepared to pay for it.

For instance say you wish to upgrade your PC from a Haswell or Broadwell chip-set to the latest Skylake chip-set. Basically you need to change your motherboard and of course buy your Skylake processor, that is essential.

Now comes the fun.

Depends what you mean by "upgradable".

Upgrading the hard disk will not affect the overall basic hardware of the console. As an example say you have the money and upgrade your HDD to an SSD. The only improvement you will get is in the loading times of your game which depending on the game may be very desirable.

Changing the motherboard, memory, processor or graphics card effectively changes the overall performance of the console although games can b...

For me backup of individual game installs is much more important since it would be so much quicker to do individual game install backups and if required their selective recovery.

With media you can be playing the game within minutes and the full installation to the hard disk will be done within thirty minutes. However say that game requires a current patch, this may take minutes to many hours depending on the size of the patch and of course your Internet performance.

Cartridges are not that different to flash memory except in the 1990's they were quite expensive when you did a cost per megabyte comparison with CD's. So having CGI FMV on cartridge would be no different to having the same on CD except for the cost.

Fast forward to today the cost per gigabyte is far cheaper for BluRay disks than for equivalent solid state devices. Not only that but in the case of the PS4 and XB1 the performance advantage of cartridges or flash memory...

Have you played The Witcher 3 on "Death March"? You really have to use your Alchemy and Sign skills as well as your combat skills such as light and heavy attack coupled with blocking, dodging, rolling and even your methods of recovery which are not normally instantaneous.

Just attacking with your swords is asking to be killed. Even wild dogs which are weak can destroy you since they will try to surround and attack from behind.

Playing Bloodborn real...

@DarXyde

You just summed up what I liked about both Demon's Souls and Dark Souls.

Bloodbourn is similar but you have to be much more aggressive in that blocking while possible is really not the way to play the game.

@frostypants

To like or not to like and all shades in between is the prerogative of all gamers. Personally I preferred Dark Souls over Demon's Souls but IMHO both games were great in their own way.

Well all games are subjective. You either like them or you don't and all shades in between.

Personally I have never really liked the MGS series but I do enjoy an RPG that has hack and slash as well as magic attributes. Shooters well I can take them or leave them but I definitely liked the Action/Adventure of Ratchet and Clank as well as Uncharted.

I also like the Souls games as well as Bloodborn and if you play The Witcher 3 on the hard modes, preferably ...
