OK. I will say it.... Hardware sales don't matter.
None of the console vendors make any significant money on just selling the hardware. It is well known that hardware is sold at razor thin margins and even at a loss at the start of the generation.
The real money in the console industry is from royalties through their stores (MS even quoted 3rd party royalties in their earnings as a driver for the increases), subscriptions ...
In reality this is just a cash grab. The gold star was set by Witcher 3 when it got a next gen upgrade for free. Unfortunately not every developer/publisher has followed that standard.
"New Features" and "all the DLC" translates to - Put as little effort in as possible and get suckers to buy it.
To be fair, hardware revenue is a lousy indicator of anything really.
Prices were lower because the older hardware sold cheaper, not as many people needed accessories because it was the end of the generation, etc.
Now we have new hardware, new accessories, etc. Even if they sold the exact same number of devices they would've seen a revenue increase because the new generation stuff is selling at a higher per unit price.
@yeahokwhatever
It wasn't just gamewise.
Gamewise it started the modern era of game for sure but, it also added DVD ushering in consoles as entertainment devices too, and had networking which also started online gaming for consoles. The groundwork laid by PS2 and the number of new genres of console games it enabled probably will never be repeated again.
Name any other console that provided so much innovation in a single generation? Not to me...
I really think that needs to be proven out. To me the PS2 is probably the greatest of all time for consoles. So far, I have seen nothing to indicate that PS5 is anything more then a PS4 on steroids.
Then, again, this generation has yet to really show us anything other than graphical, sound, and controller improvements. I wanna see new games with now concepts Not more the same but looking better.
Very few "Japanese" games released on XB day one at that time. MS has done a good job at hunting down the good ones lately and getting them onto XB (and even better most are put on GamePass - Yakuzas is a prime example). But there is what I call the dark period from 2010 to 2017 where MS got way to focused on Kinect, Released an under powered next gen console (XBO) and moved their focus to general entertainment instead of games.
What could've been vs what is...
Ya, if you only play a few games subscriptions aren't for you or you don't need to subscribe all the time. I have the attention span somewhere between a 1 second and 30 minutes, so I game surf a lot. Subscriptions really save me a ton of money. I used to spend a lot more games then now.
Call of Duty was dead to me long ago. I made the mistake of buying it near day one this past holiday because I though Cold War looked interesting. Got to the stealth mission in the evening at the Russian compound and the game kept freezing and rebooting on me. Lag was awful for me on multiplayer (Even though I have 1Gbps Internet). Put it aside, and chalked it up as a lesson on not to buy another CoD game near day one.
I am excited as a few previews this week said that it is the first truly next gen game. I want to see that!
I've only played this for a few hours. I would not say it is a 67. More like in the mid 70's. So yes it is mediocre.
There are a lot of games on game pass that are 80+. You obviously don't like game pass but there are 10's of millions of gamers that think otherwise. So, your need to make randomly negative comments about XB, XB Games, and GamePass are just that. Randomly negative comments.
To me GamePass is a tool to help save me mone...
Yup, a well rated game gets good sales. That is good for the developer, publisher, and gamers.
Really what does that have to do with my comment. My comment was about PSVR. I didn't buy one for my PS4 because it was too expensive. And it looks like many gamers felt the same way because less then 5% of PS4 gamers bought the device.
As FreeFallFrenzy said, they have to get the price to $200. But, with their approach of starting marketing now well before release, that kind of indicates a similar price to last generation. Which means again, that not as many gamer...
Until PSVR gets to a decent accessory price it has no hope of being "big". Even with all the hype, advertising, and great game support last generation, it only managed to get sold to 5% of PS gamers.
But, it is a nice luxury accessory for people who want it and can afford it.
Totally worth it. I have played every previous MLB The Show on PS. This year switching to XB because of its availability in GamePass.
I played every previous MLB The Show on PS. This year I am playing it on XB because it is part of GamePass. For XB gamers that like baseball games, you should know that MLB The Show is the only baseball game worth playing! Sony perfected baseball games long ago!
@Magog
XBL Gold gives you monthly games - PS Plus gives you monthly games. It should be noted that PS Plus has given over double the games that XBL Gold has
XB GamePass is streaming and Netflix type access to games - PS Now is streaming and Netflix type access to games. Should be noted that PSNow has over double the games that GamePass does
XB GamePass Ultimate is XBL Gold + GamePass (For both PC and Console + EA Play - Sony has no competitor t...
@Zeref
For something to be a gamechanger it has to make a difference when you are buying an new console. I doubt that most people who buy PS consoles would say, "Hey, if I drop the highly rated exclusives, and buy an XB my old games get 120 fps so that is a good decision". Or Nintendo people saying, "Hey if I lose the portability of my console and Zelda/Mario games, I get 120 fps with XB so that is a good decision".
I will agree this is a loya...
Sony did a great job here. Always have had love for MLB The Show!
Playstation Plus competes with XBL Gold not GamePass.
No gamer should be rating MS on how well their revenues are doing. Revenues do not make the best consoles, best games, and help gamers in any way, shape, or form. Revenues is the money that the vendor collects from gamers and that is it. I wouldn't call what they are doing as "Killing it", "Doing Well", or "Beast Mode" right now.
From a console sales front they are third. So, there is a lot of room for improvement.
