Yeah, it seems like the gameplay itself wasn't for you. The missions are there to somewhat enhance the game, but mostly they're just there to push you in different directions in selecting parts and learning how the mechanics work (which takes a long, long, long time). I agree that some of them feel like they're luck-based (and if they planned some of these missions to be "without the Nuke body," I think it would have been more meaningful), but most of those missions I co...

"The controls are responsive, but the ship behaviour makes for a loose, wild game with little of the precision typical of arcade shooters."

I'd argue it allows for much more precision, due to it having multiple fair and well-programmed variables as opposed to a scrolling or flat top-down shooter. Gravity affects everything in that game, and melee is a valid option. It throws you off-kilter. It's wild, but getting a hold of that wild-ness is where the precisi...

The Witcher 2 sold 6 million units by October 2013, so I think they did alright.

I mean, alright enough to make a sequel to a pretty tough, uncompromising RPG. That's really something.

"Project cancellations and the cutting of staff – especially at studios in the middle of projects like Evolution and Sony Santa Monica – indicate that teams are having trouble building, finishing, and shipping their games."

Gee, ya think? That's been happening all over the industry, with even Titanfall releasing as half of your typical FPS. In the meantime, these independent developers that Sony has fostered have made the PS4 unique, and making these games often...

Nice review!

Also, you'll probably like the post Rami made about why this game is the way it is:

I mean, it's not just hard to show us that we're video game plebes, it's an expression of rage.

As much as I want to agree with the guy, I think it heavily depends on the creativity behind the game itself. PaRappa was this unicorn of a game that got a great amount of funding from Sony and involved two very different multimedia artists, one from New York and one from Japan. The aesthetics and music were as non-PS1-game as you could possibly get, and it wasn't just a good rhythm game, it was a mold-breaking game in terms of its visual and sound design. Lammy just made it even better, ...

I'm giving it 20% probability that this is actually Frog Fractions 2. ;)

I'm not sure why that prediction is based on venture capital changing the industry. Maybe - just maybe - you'll see mid-tier games come back after their absence for years because of those angel investors (and mid-tier games always took some weird risks while making concessions!), and who knows how they'll do, but venture capital elsewhere won't stop some new guy making some amazing game in his basement from happening.

Making small games for the PC and its rela...

True, Enigma. He did start it in the Wild West of Kickstarter, near the beginning. Backers really were "early adopters" of the service as opposed to now, where hopefully devs will read up on success/failure cases before starting out. But back then, where complete amateurs were getting their stuff approved, at least this guy had something deliverable from the past going into it. He just found out that management is a beast of a thing.

Well, Super Mario Crossover is why people supported him - I'm pretty sure most of the backers didn't take the whole "He's going to pay people for the first time and actually manage a budget" thing seriously enough. As one independent dude who borrowed plenty of assets from Nintendo-based franchises, he really did produce in SMBC.

He figured out the hard way, I think, that not every person he hired produces on that level. That's why they didn't ge...

You can tell this wasn't the original intent, though. The CEO had been around for a while under the Exploding Rabbit name, creating free iteration after free iteration of Super Mario Crossover. Some developers just aren't good managers, and this guy just figured that out. Time's money, the project took too long, and he couldn't pay his staff for their time anymore.

"It is obvious in the video that I was excited about the project and was dreaming big, but ...

I'm honestly disagreeing most with the "mature" and "realistic" proposals, if only because "mature" is so often equated with gore, while "realistic" is often equated with military-shooter green-brownishness. The more vibrant colors and isolating atmospheres were what made the old Metroids great - in no way would I ever want to see a Metroid that looked more like a CoD. Now, if you mean realistic within the context of the Metroid aesthetic, then yes!...

That's interesting - Nuclear Throne's made in GameMaker, and while they have their issues with how sound works in it, it's certainly a great game.

Dolphin is a GameCube and Wii emulator that runs both. The hardware was so similar between generations that a multi-function emulator was fine. There's something out there for PS2, also.

360, though? No way. They haven't even successfully emulated the original Xbox, which is a shame since so many of those games lost their compatibility and availability early on. RIP Gunvalkyrie.

Those newer systems are really tough to emulate - they're too comple...

Yeesh! We spent less earlier on and have zero issues - it looks like you have a problem with your graphics card. Check out what's happening on it specifically, Google it and find some forum/community posts.

Edit: Wow, now I get the video card issue. Yikes.

Also, if console game devs just put in an option to make the thing run at a higher framerate at a lower resolution, I'd be so much more happy with console gaming. I happen to prefer high framerates to more pixels on the screen, so for me, the PC's the option I've got, high-end system or not.

Eh, both have their peripherals, depending on what you're into. Soon enough, I think the PC's going to see a huge Oculus Rift push, and before that there were plenty of joysticks, custom steering wheels, etc. for it.

There are quantitatively more of those for the PC, simply because they don't need another company's approval - they just need to be compatible.

Saying there are "Console Gamers" and "PC Gamers" as types is like saying there are "Foot Walkers" and "Car Drivers." People play so many different kinds of games on both, with different consoles and different games. Plenty of people play the big AAA games on either one - and yeah, the graphics are going to be better on a top-of-the-line PC, but both are playable.

I like the PC because independent developers usually start there and work...

He probably saw what Inafune was doing and decided to do the same.

Really, there isn't a better parallel to Inafune (Megaman, Mighty No. 9) than Iga - they both were in once-gigantic Japanese companies that became horribly risk-averse and started making more Western-ish games, thinking that would solve their sales problems, while pushing aside franchises like theirs. In the meantime, fans chomp at the bit for a new actual Megaman or Castlevania and nothing happens. Then, ...
