PS2 had more than just the Sony name to make it sell like it did. Firstly, in many countries, PS2 was the cheapest DVD movie player available. Secondly, it had 100% compatibility with all PS1 games and made those games look better when played on a PS2. Third, their pricing wasn't so far beyond the norm that most people couldn't afford it.
