I get the feeling you've rather missed the point.

Who is going to buy Guild Wars 2? People who know the brand and have followed the hype, of course. But those people were going to buy it from the very get go. People who have friends playing or will see ads online and have the spare cash will definitely consider, especially if they see it on offer.

But this cuts out a huge group of people who played the original Guild Wars because at the time there was no ...

I can't be the only person tired of reading about how developers designing attractive women is sexist. It's really, really not. Strong characters do not have to be ugly to be strong characters. Just because they've got a big nose and a moustache does not mean that a female has had to go through more than an attractive counterpart and it certainly wouldn't make things more realistic.

"if it manages to survive against The Old Republic F2P and all those other games on the market"

The Old Republic is also much, much cheaper. For a casual there's just no competition between free and paid-for, no matter if there are subscriptions or not.

For the sake of people not reading the article: this isn't about the price as it is, but rather that the advantages that this model held for the original Guild Wars are no longer relevant. Casual players have a whole world of choice without having to pay a penny and hardcore MMO fans have no need to have a fall back MMO when there's a ton of new, free games coming out on a daily basis.

The game will still be a success, it says, but initial sales will only be for peopl...

"Innovative" games cost more to research, to develop and they rarely sell more than games that took half as long and cost half as much.

And, apart from the innovative bit, they rarely manage to get better review scores/fan reaction either.

I agree but for a different reason. The way the headline is written makes it seem like it's just some random person they've gotten off the street.

The whole headline sucks completely, actually.

If it helps, the vocal minority really does believe they're the majority and that everybody is getting what they want.

You're 100% right though.

Something tells me GamerXchange.net, registered early 2011, has little to do with the polarization of gaming's fanbase.

You have some pent up rage against Kotaku and IGN, great - so does everybody - but a lot of decent stuff is coming from smaller sites (can't speak for GamerXchange, never read anything from there) and blaming all of the bias inherent in our industry on "JOURNALISM" is weak and is part of the reason why the press, the industry and the fans a...

Handy that the vast majority of people who buy into the series enjoy it then, huh?

Yeah. It's articles like these that undermine the importance of anthropomorphic creatures in our society.

That was my thought. Some people are terrible and would just pay a few dollars. A good number would pay what they're paying now if they thought it was worth it. Others would pay more. It might just even out to the point where it might work, but again, not a perfect solution.

The only definite thing is that $60/£40 isn't working.

I'm not sure free-to-play is exactly the way to go, but something needs to be done. I can't think of a better alternative. Maybe an honour system; "if you enjoy this game, pay what you think it's worth."

There's no simple answers, however you want to look at it.

Great article, if only for trying to put a different spin on what people are already taking as fact.

My take on it? Anybody who thinks 13-14 million copies sold is anything but a complete success - no matter what previous sales have been - is kidding themselves and are looking for problems where there aren't any. The sales for Call of Duty could only rise so high before they hit the limit of people interested/people who like the series enough to buy it at launch.

You've hit the nail on the head right there. The people who will be tempted by the Infamous Collection are people that have never played either game before. Is it a bad thing to have choice? Never.

Nobody complained about the Uncharted bundle released in time for Uncharted 3 and it's fair to say that sales were enough to show that this sort of thing could be a success. People with the games digitally may be tempted to buy the collection. People looking to get rid of s...

I'd like to see them release it this year, just to see if this sort of marketing works. Release one trailer and give absolutely no more details, release the game randomly and see if the name and the hype we've created ourselves is enough to sell it.

Will it happen? Probably not.

Game development IS always about trade offs, we've heard it time and time before. It's why Uncharted is so linear, it's why a game by Bethesda will never be glitch free. It's not (always) down to lazy development, but because a game has to adhere to the restrictions at the time. Even on PC you can't presume everybody has the highest-end systems and that everybody upgrades all of the time. That's part of the reason why games are only now ditching XP as a compatible syst...

I can say first hand that when you use sites like Reddit and N4G - and we all do it - the amount of people who return even once after a big story is next to nothing. I'm talking less than a few per cent, if as much as that.

A lot of these sites survive entirely on having scoop after scoop, which is why it's pretty important to keep the scoops coming. Without the money to spend thousands on SEO experts, there's really no way for them to thrive without constant atte...

You might be right about gaming journalism, but I'm not sure you know ANYTHING about "true" journalism.

Anything you hate about games journalism is ten times worse outside of the industry, and generally performed by people who have been trained to university standard, as opposed to people doing it for the love of the job. That's why we've needed the Leveson Enquiry, as well as the closure of countless national, international and local papers.
