I've seen more than a few "proper" media stories about first the trailer and then fan hype build up. That doesn't mean, of course, that it's coming this year, but that more than people on the internet know that GTA V is on its way.
I can see a minimalist marketing scheme (nothing and then a month or two of massive hype so nobody has chance to get bored/question their undying loyalty to the brand) and an earlier than expected release date, although I woul...
It had a pretty monstrous open world to explore, actually, and Final Fantasy XIII-2 gave even more leeway to the player in terms of exploration.
My favourite thing about this site: you state your opinion on a game and people disagree.
@Amaguli
Dragon Age II is a great example. I remember the Mass Effect crowd being annoyed by Dragon Age's traditional gameplay, I remember people being disappointed by the story and the fact that your choices/origins didn't really matter and I remember general things like graphics bugging others.
So Bioware tried to balance things out as best they could in a sequel and all the same people complained but for different reasons. Worse, all the same peopl...
@MikeCosgrove
No, you're young or haven't fully been through other generations because you don't seem to realize that previous generations had massive, gaping flaws as well. You're either conveniently looking over problems or you weren't there. Either way, not good when you voice your opinions as if you have experience.
This generation isn't perfect by any means (the fact that digital distribution and online networks were something of ...

I wasn't there mate, so I can't say for sure. A dev version of the game, however, would have been played months and months before the official demo was even complete and a long time before the game was finalized. It's perfectly believable to think that that review was done ages before the final version of the game was pressed or before it had gone gold.
While I don't deal with PR people any more, I can promise you that even days bef...
@Amaguli
Nobody is ignoring the criticism, that's not my point. Developers always watch forums and message boards to see what people are thinking. The problem is, the internet is a mess of opinions (good and bad) and selfishness and vocal minorities and it just isn't as simple as you made it out to be.
Here we go: group A will quite happily criticize game A for being boring, not having enough story and for being ugly, whereas group B will criticize ga...

All I can say is that in my experience (three years writing about the gaming industry, nearly ten generally), I've never known anybody be offered money for a good review score. There have been a few cases, like Kane and Lynch 2, where the owners of the site have stepped in after complaints from advertisers, but the very fact that that was such a big deal at the time shows how rarely that sort of thing happens.
Companies don't buy coverage. ...
Every post I see from you is so anti-industry, and usually without anything actually backing it up. Bite the hand that feeds, much?
No company ever paid off a reviewer, Capcom are obviously confident that the gameplay will win out in the end (especially since a lot of people have become far more open to the idea of at least trying it out since seeing gameplay in action) and it's possible for somebody to disagree with your opinion on something without being immoral or bad ...
Right, but how about if you had two professors and they both told you opposite things? What if you had a thousand professors debating over your paper and each one thought they were the one true expert?
What if you had large groups of professors that all felt they had the way of fixing your paper despite the fact that you'd already been given top marks and everybody not obsessed with the problems of your paper thought it was more than passable?
Your analog...
Except a lot of old games would have hugely benefited from DLC. If all you're going to judge previous generations on is the top tier games, of course things are going to look worse this generation when you take every single game into account. Look at the lower-mid tier games that were released over the last 30 years though and the majority were short, buggy and are now massively viewed through rose-tinted glasses.
Not every game today is a Chrono Cross, a Final Fantasy, a...
I actually think his response was fairly pro-journalism considering the usual ire launched into whenever a developer gets a chance to blame a member of the press for all the troubles under the sun. He said there were issues at every part of the chain: with the original statement, with the press and with the end reader, and asides from a few specifics I completely agree with him.
The irony here, of course, is that the title is a little misleading and makes you think you're...
While I'm not at all convinced it's coming out this year, if you're well aware of Rockstar's release habits/inability to release a game when they say they will, Rockstar will be aware of that as well.
If their way of marketing this game is by letting the hype build itself (something that I think it's fair to say has been hugely successful thus far), I'm sure they'll have taken all of that into account and will have doubled their efforts to hit the ...
@Baka-akaB
The date isn't from a store, it's from the publisher. That's rather the point.
It has been confirmed by Zavvi that that isn't their place holder. While they're not exactly confirming the release date, they're confirming that that's what they've been told (by the people who are making the game) is the release date.
The title is fine if this story turns out to be true, which of course isn't always 100% certain.
If Zavvi really has confirmed that this isn't just a place holder (at least on behalf of the store), this is pretty huge news. I know Rockstar won't comment, but I'm looking forward to seeing how this plays out.
...which is exactly what I've put. You're one of the group buying it because you like the looks of Guild Wars 2. You don't fall into the group of people not interested but who, six years ago, would have been interested in Guild Wars because it meant you didn't have to pay a subscription.
Presumably you're NOT buying it because you don't have to pay a monthly subscription?
EDIT: Then you're not one of the people I'm talking abo...
But even then, the tits and ass doesn't necessarily make it sexist. You might think of it as bad writing and in a lot of cases you'd probably be right, but let's not turn it into something it isn't.
If those same characters you're thinking of were made less attractive, would they be any more interesting? Would you have enjoyed the game any more? I'm guessing probably not.
@BicFitness
Have you read the article? I kind of feel you haven't. If you had - at 1100 words and with more than enough to back up what I've now had to explain three times to you - I don't feel you could call it sensationalist. The Old Republic is mentioned only once in the context we're discussing it, as a representation of ONE of the many, many free to play titles that casual and new-to-market players can get for free over the paid-for Guild Wars 2, and then...
If Sony want to make a profit, surely dropping the price to a point they can't afford is a bad decision. Surely selling slowly and making a steady profit is better than selling quickly and losing a load?
If Sony felt things were going terribly they'd do something about it. They haven't, so we have to presume their current situation is the best case scenario and they're expecting things to turn around.
