Plans do tend to change... I don't think MS planned for only 300K+ X360 on release day in the NA either... And if they had the planned success in Japan, they would probably have had to ship even fewer to the NA, so in a way their change of plans was good for X360 gamers in NA.

Going by that statement, you shouldn't believe anything MS says either... They've probably misled (or "lied" as you like to call it) a lot more than Sony. They were the ones to call XBox graphics for Toy Story quallity (not Sony), they were the ones to call X360 fully backwards compatible. They stated a 2003 release of Longhorn, then delayed it, and delayed it, and delayed it, and cut it back, and skipped most of it.

So 500K for Sony is for the first days of launch -- a period MS only managed 324K in NA compared to Sony's stated 400K....
In a lot of countries in Europe, you'll get a one or even two year warranty from the dealer by law. If anything happens to your electronics, it will probably happen within the said two first years. So scratch that of your list...

And remember if you buy a X360 Premium, some people atleast, would need to spend an extra: $50 for online play + $79 for WiFi + $199 for HD-DVD + $??? for extra capacity ...
This is the first official delay of the PS3 in Europe... Sony never promissed a release of the PS3 in Europe before this Nov. If you think of the supposed spring launch, they never stated which region and implyed it would be Japan only.
If you are a hardcore fanboy, you probably won't shift sides yet. That would happen at the release of the PS3 at the earliest.
I will however be a proud PS3 owner when that day comes... And I've been playing a bit of X360 this year, but now it's in a closet collecting dust. Thought I could use it for DVD-playback, but the sound goes out of sync (like the first batch of PS2), the noise from it is unbearable and my girlfriend couldn't stand its looks in our livingroom... enough ...
Actually that would be 500K by launch and 2M by years end (what MS considers as the "launch window").
Sony is aiming for 2M shipped PS3's by years end... So compare 2M PS3 to 10M X360... If Sony succeed, they will actually have had a better launch than X360 had...
1. You don't have to buy a 600$ PS3... The 499$ PS3 compares favourably to the 399$ X360. And if you indeed do buy the 599$ PS3, you won't absolutely have to buy an HDMI-cable... The shipped, probably component, cable will be sufficient. You'll only need the HDMI if you have special requirements in that regard (nicer with one cable, want to futureproof your Blu-Ray on PS3 viewing beyond 2010). I will ofcourse buy one... but that is my decision.

Sony actually only stated a spring 2006 release of PS3 (which could mean may 2006) and implied it would be Japan only. So technically the PS3 has been delayed by 6 months in Japan and 4 months in Europe.

Sony claims to ship 2M by years end and technically march 2007 could be march 29th. Leaving Sony to manufacture about 4M consoles in the three months... Now that sounds more right if they can manage a proper ramp up of production.

1. By stating the PS3 will need more consoles at launch than X360, you actually agree PS3 will sell through quicker and be more successful than X360 -- actually winning the "next-gen-war"?
2. What is the 199 PS3? I don't get it... They've got a 499 PS3 which compares favourably to the 399 XBox 360... The 299 XBox 360 is gimped, so most won't buy it.

But since the PS3 Core compares favourably to the X360 Premium, most people will probably suffice with the PS3 Core -- it's not like it's a gimped system like the X360 Core...

There is a difference in how MS and Sony defines "launch". MS thinks launch means the entire quarter, while Sony thinks of it as the first week.
So comparing it should be 1.5M X360 worldwide by years end and 2M PS3 by years end of their respective launchyears and the PS3 launch will only cover NA and JP so a lot more consoles available in those markets.
Ofcourse you're right in there will be shortages...
They'll actually beat the X360 launch in NA by about 25-35% if they succeed at reaching their new goals.
Girlfriend hates it (and I'm not too much for the design either), it's noisy and it sucks at DVD's and I'm not even that demanding... I might take it out for a game of GoW now and again when that time comes... but for now it's in the closet...
My slim PS2 is still in the livingroom - used for DVDs and PES with my friends. My original launchday PS2 is in the bedroom alive and kicking for some DVD-playback when we feel like it - we both decided it was too noisy for the livingroom...
