Normally the PC vs. console debate is quite polarised, but I can't help but smile at the guy here trying to bash PC gaming mere moments after admitting that he has a Steam collection of over 50 titles. For a platform that has a lot of games you don't play, you sure as hell own a lot of games on it.
Do you even own 50 PS3/360 games?
You missed out, but keep an eye on this - http://www.amazon.com/Squar...
This was like $7.49 I think (or it might have been $15), but it contained JC2 as well as a few other great games worth having - all but one of which was activatable on steam (Tomb Raider Underworld was not). Not quite $5 for JC2, but not far off all things considered.
It's a non-issue, it doesn't matter if a game gets delayed, you just have to wait longer. You're essentially asking the developers to predict the future or forgo months (or years) of marketing, meaning your project is a bigger risk.
@slayorofgods - It would look like the tech demo of Unreal 4.
I think the thing to keep in mind is that current consoles have powerful enough graphics cards that we can already push millions of polygons onto the screen at once. Pushing a few million more won't make as big an impact as the jump from the last generation, but instead that extra processing power will concentrate on making the rest of the scene look more realistic - better looking liquids, better physics, more...
There's so much idiocy in this thread, it's hard to not not slam my face into the desk.
"rumors say MS is going for at least 4GB of GDDR3 while Sony will go for 2GB of GDDR5"
Why would Microsoft use GDDR3? It's an old technology by now, nobody really produces it any more meaning it'd be MORE expensive to use GDDR3 than say GDDR5 (or whatever is more popular at the time).
"Don't forget a PC also needs to cont...
So what's this got to do with the next Xbox, specifically? Last time I checked, Unreal was used on pretty much all current gen platforms. Hell, I've got games on my phone that use unreal 3.
Cache wasn't added to cope with large amounts of RAM, cache was added to increase performance as cache is typically several times faster than RAM (since it's on the chip itself). Having more RAM by itself isn't going to decrease performance, rather it'll cause issues if you're constantly accessing the entire contents of memory but that's where good design comes into it from a development perspective.
Think of any open world sandbox game, such as GTA or Red Fact...
I've just realised that you're the author.
According to your little chart:
PS1: 2Mb of RAM
PS2: 32Mb of RAM
PS3: 256Mb of RAM
and then you go on to say...
"The RAM increasement is being done on a 8x basis"
Tell me good sir, how do you go from 2Mb to 32Mb on an 8x basis?
Article is a waste of time. For one, the author doesn't know that VRAM is VIDEO RAM, i.e. RAM the graphics chip uses as opposed to main memory.
Based on the fact that they don't seem to know what is frankly a basic point about RAM, take their article and ignore it as they don't know what they're talking about.
Also, anyone saying that "x amount of RAM is too much" is an idiot. There's no such thing as "Too much RAM", developers ...
Why do people care about sales at this point in the game? We're gunning for a new generation. They might not be announced this E3, but they sure as hell seem poised to be released some time next year. Why are people still fighting over the PS3 and 360? At this point, neither has outright lost, nor has either outright won.
7th Generation was a tie, accept it already. Sure, the odd victory was won here and there, mistakes and triumphs alike were made but they're both still in t...
Why in the name of titties and beer are people STILL arguing about marketshare and sales?
Jesus Christ both the 360 and the PS3 are now older than the previous generation consoles were when they were replaced. We're gearing up for an E3 that may just announce at least one of the next generation consoles with an almost certain guarantee that next year we'll know about both the PS3 and 360's successor's.
Face it - we're at the end of this console's lifec...
Oh wow, there's a whole lotta ignorance here.
Let me get this point out of the way first - Havok is a PHYSICS engine. It does physics and nothing else. If you want realistic physics, Havok is wonderful but unless you also have a graphics engine to back it up, you won't be able to SEE the physics in action. You'll just have a blank screen (With some amazing physics running behind the scenes!)
Unreal can use Havok Physics, it can also use Nvidia PhysX for Ph...
Everyone on 4chan posts anonymously, so how the hell do you know it's the same guy?
Not to be too pedantic, but that's how a lot of the "scene" distributes NFO files. Here's an appropriate example: http://www.ludibria.com/nfo... (Don't worry, there's no downloads/piracy here).
Plus, there is the matter of copyright - I know, its ludicrous, but copying an entire text file from the game could be a copyright violation. Why not play it safe? Yes - a cr...
Your incentive to continue IS the gameplay. Going by your logic, games like Tetris, Dance Dance Revolution, Guitar Hero, Super Mario, hell even Call of Duty (Yes it has a story, but most would agree that it's poor and many wouldn't even know what it was because it's all about the MP), shouldn't interest you or millions of others, but they do. If a gameplay element is engrossing enough, you don't need a story at all. Your incentive will be different, it'll be a high sco...
Epic won't wait, they didn't wait when the 360 and PS3 came out and the result was that practically half the games on both consoles are made with the Unreal Engine. The lower install base actually helps Epic, because developers want to risk as little as possible on a new platform, but if they can target multiple platforms with a solid engine, then it works out best for them. I wouldn't be surprised if Unreal 4 was ported to the PS360 for that very reason - you can make your game f...
The 360 was out in 2005, the PS3 in 2006. If a new console was to come out this year, that'd be 6 or 7 years. Next year it'll be 7 or 8 years...I don't really see why people think this generation is still "young".
5 or 6 years? The 360 was out in 2005, the PS3 in 2006. If a new console was to come out this year, that'd be 6 or 7 years. Next year it'll be 7 or 8 years...I don't really see why people think this generation is still "young". Going by your logic, we should have had a new console last year.
I don't care if they're getting high on acid and writing the story down on toilet paper, gleamed from the carvings a maniac wrote on the back of someone's skull - as long as the story is as good as the last two games, I'll be MORE than happy. Bioware have done themselves proud with this series.
Why do people keep comparing RAM in consoles to RAM on a PC? Arguments made during the LAST generation may have been valid, but this generation's consoles are capable of streaming music, ingame voice-chat, background downloads and more - for the next generation, I expect the same and more. There's no reason why we shouldn't all get an ingame web browser aside from the fact that web browsers eat RAM.
In any case, 1Gb is not anywhere near enough, even excluding all of the ab...
