People have gotten really lazy with the sales narrative around Battlefield because they didn't like the marketing for V. BFV sold over 7 million copies in less than six weeks. It was still a disappointment compared to the sales of BF1 and compared to their expectations (which as you say is to be a viable COD competitor), but a game that almost certainly sold over 10 million in its first year, if not its first six months, can hardly be considered "niche."

COD 4 ruined multiplayer shooters. Unfortunately now a massive segment of the potential market for a game like Battlefield has ingrained into their minds that shooters need to have a "progression" system where guns are artificially locked away behind a certain amount of time playing. People don't even understand the concept of playing a game for the challenge of it or because a game is fun to play. It's a slightly different scenario, but Destiny 2 has run into this recently ...
New term "Worthless cash cow." But yeah BF1942 was the best. Still among the best multiplayer shooters ever made, and blissfully free from the stupid gun leveling system that has infected nearly every FPS since COD 4.
"Players will have abilities like COD's perks."
Please no. No, no, no. I don't want magical things to happen if I get a certain number of kills or deaths. Give me good maps, good gunplay, and destructability.
Groan. BF1943 was such a dumbed down version of BF1942. Worst one in the series.
Lol classic that the people who always say "meh" are the same people who always say something "smacks" of another thing.
@IamTylerDurden1
You are right. I was forgetting how close that one was.
@knightedHollow
I hope so. But I'm just afraid there won't be much advertising, etc. My guess is that if I asked my other friends who own PS5s, many of them won't have even heard of this game. That will need to be fixed somehow.
I just think Deathloop is an easier sell to someone who isn't already interested.
I hope so. I think it's going to need strong critical reception and strong word of mouth from fans, but with those two things and the fact that it looks to be Sony's only true PS5 exclusive for awhile (yes there's Deathloop but it isn't Sony-published), it could be a moderate success.
Ah I wish this game would have stayed in March! Excited to check it out either way though.
It's not about the fact that all 3 games happened to be on PS3. It's the fact that, for various reasons including poor advertising and bad consumer decision making, the new Sony IP from that era just didn't sell like they deserved to sell. Uncharted was an exception of course, which is why it got a fourth game. Also, Gears of War didn't have this problem. MS advertised it very well, and although it has fallen far from that perception today, there was a time when it was one of ...
Unfortunately I feel like Resistance is too associated with the PS3/very early PS4 era of IP that Sony has moved on from. When you look at IP active in that era that are still alive today, it's largely either IP that were established before PS3 (Gran Turismo, God of War) or Naughty Dog games (Uncharted, Last of Us). I don't think we are going to see Killzone, Motorstorm, Infamous, or Resistance again, as much as I hate to say it.
It's a shame too, because I thin...
It can be. Look at Dying Light. However, I agree with you that this generation, everyone seems intent on pushing forward with cross gen even far past the point it will possibly be worthwhile. So even though it makes perfect sense to cancel the last gen versions, they probably won't.
We can only hope that this will mean they are canceling the last gen versions in favor of focusing on PS5/Series X/S. As sad as last gen sales are already, there will certainly be no justification for launching on those platforms in 2022.
I heard he never missed a board meeting.
Uhhh not if it was a just a PS4 game that simply ran on PS5 via backwards compatibility. Having a PS5 version of the game is what is allowing it to reach these sales. PS5 purchasers wouldn't treat it as the game to buy for PS5 if it was just a PS4 game.
Yep. I don't know when Sony (and other companies for that matter) are going to realize that the prior gen install base doesn't keep buying new games (outside of COD and sports games) on old hardware once a newer system is out. They keep holding games back to please a non-existent demographic of hardcore PlayStation fans who aren't buying a PS5, and all it does is take the wind out of the sails of their new games. Like I wouldn't think twice about Returnal if it was a PS4 game,...
Yep. And this is a game that came out at launch, when almost no one had a PS5. This issue is only going to get worse; Horizon is being gimped on PS5 to accommodate PS4, but it's going to sell the vast majority of its copies on PS5. That's to say nothing of the games coming out in 2022 that will still be cross gen. The companies still gimping their games to release on PS4 9 years later are going to look like fools when they sell 90%+ on PS5 (and Series X/S for multiplats).
Hmm interesting that it jumps up the charts everytime the PS5 is in stock, but the vaunted PS4 install base isn't keeping it there.
Because COD 4 ruined shooters.
