It is disappointing that the PS Directs have dried up. Late last year they were doing a bunch of those every week, and that's how a lot of people bypassed scalpers.

Just looking at auctions ending soon on eBay, while PS5 and Series X are still selling for a substantial premium, Series S is not going for much above MSRP at this point. It's actually starting to seem like MS might have underestimated how many people will go for Series X over the S. I think Series S is really hampered from being the "Casual" Xbox by not having a disc drive, and I'm sure that's a lot of the market they were hoping to get.

@StoneyYoshi

You're going to have to use a /s on questions like that, because a ton of people really believe that scalpers hold a large chunk of the inventory.

It's amazing how many people seem to legitimately believe that scalpers are buying and holding PS5s. Scalpers buy them to resell. If actual ultimate consumers weren't buying them from scalpers, the scalpers would stop buying them from the stores.

@darthv72

Why on earth would someone pay a premium for a Series S right now? X still goes out of stock instantly, but Walmart, GameStop, and the Microsoft store have extended periods basically every week where Series S is in stock. It's no longer even a situation where you need a discord or something; basically if you check nowinstock once or twice a day, you'll be able to get one within a day or two.

Scalpers are, of course, notorious for buying items and just sitting on them. It's not as if consoles purchased by scalpers could somehow end up in the hands of actual game consumers.

That moment when you link to resetera and it isn't even the dumbest part of your comment.

I wish that instead of this cloud nonsense, they would have just ported some of the old Hitman games to Switch (not Absolution of course, but maybe Silent Assassin and Blood Money).

It's meaningful for comparing PS5 to PS4. It certainly undercounts the next gen platforms to a degree though, because people who have either the PS5 Digital or the Series S can't play physical games. It's also useful because a game that tops the physical charts is unlikely to bomb digitally. There are occasionally discrepancies (like I think there was a point last year between TLOU 2 and Ghost of Tsushima where one sold slighly better overall even though the other sold better digi...

I mean, from the consumer's perspective, that's an upside to Gamepass. If you can wait and you believe you'll be able to play a game in a few months as part of something you already pay for, that's a great position to be in. Now the question for Sony is whether they can figure a way to turn this to their advantage. Like by approaching publishers and saying, "hey, your sales are going to be on our platform anyway, why not do a timed exclusivity deal, then you can just laun...

Why not? Hitman 3 and Outriders on PS5 each outsold their PS4 counterparts, and now more people have PS5s than at those launches. I'd be willing to bet good money the same is true for Miles Morales, but I don't have numbers so I can't make that claim for sure. Sales on last gen machines always drop off after new consoles launch. Same thing happened last gen when MGSV launched cross-gen. PS3/360 had install base probably 3 times the size of PS4/Xbox One, but the game sold over 90% ...

Why is that crazy?

These are physical sales. Who on earth buys PC games physically?

1783d ago 7 agree0 disagreeView comment

Next time people want to talk about install base they should remember that, once you take out Series X/S sales, the PS5 version will have outsold the PS4 and Xbox One versions combined. But people are still going to say next year that games need to be on PS4 because of the install base. So dumb.

Lol because we all know the best, most-beloved FF games were the ones that launched as multiplatform titles.

Lol when FF XIII launched, the PS3 version outsold the 360 version 2:1 in the United States. ( https://www.psu.com/news/fi... Honestly if Sony is going to pay Japanese devs any kind of money for exclusivity, it pretty much makes sense to take it. If you are a Japanese studio making a game aimed at higher end consoles (obviously Japanese games can sell on Switch so that's another story), even if you release on PS/Xbox/PC simultaneously you are going to sell disproportionately on Playstation (this was true even when the install bases were pretty even in the PS3/360 gen). So if Sony is going to give you money to ke...

@Orchard

That's actually one of the most disappointing parts of the Bethesda deal that no one is talking about because everyone focused so much on the MS-Sony dynamic: Nintendo is now going to lose one of the best 3rd party supporters of the Switch, at least among Western studios.

And it's nice to see them doing it with sales from people buying it as a game console, rather than as a toy that happened to be a fad (like the Wii). While I know there were real Mario/Zelda fans who bought the Wii for those types of games, you can't get away from the fact that it sold to a ton of casuals because of Wii Sports.
