I'm sure it will be fine. Their remakes of FF games on DS and iPad have been great.
It's bad enough that we seem to be going back to 2007 with the growing 'The PS4 is doomed' articles, but to jump back to the 90's to argue about the Rumble Pack???
There was nothing wrong with it. Why did someone write this article. Why did people approve it. Why did I bother commenting!
Lets be serious here. The Steambox is not going to 'shake the games industry to its very core, toppling incumbents who thought themselves safe'.
Lets look at the past to get an idea of how 'easy' it is to shake the industry.
The last manufacturer to shake the industry was a small company you might not have heard of... Microsoft!!
The original XBox cost them a 5 billion dollar loss over its life cycle. A chunk of that was R&am...
There's pro's and con's....
Pro's:
- Developers can collect game play data, analyse how gamers play, and use it to make better single player games in future
- They can more easily detect problems and imbalances and patch the game. it allows them to prioritise better
- They can reduce piracy (sort of, and depending on the platform)
- If done well it can add to the single player experience (see Demons Souls)
Con'...
Would be good if the article actually defined what 'succeed' means. Most people seem to be obsessed with 'Teh Sony haz 2 beat teh M$'.
But for most company's the measure of success is 1st. profit and 2nd. market share. So it really doesn't matter how powerful the PS4 is as long as it increases both the above.
The problem the PS3 had - is that it took far too long to become profitable, and Sony's competitors have grabbed market sh...
This is gonna be like 2007 all over again!
"but Microsoft killed jrpgs in the west in the tune of $100 M bitch slapping on Square Enix ass."
I don't agree with your statement. Didn't MS fund Mistwalker for a few exclusive games? Seems they were pretty keen to get JRPG's on the 360 - at least in the early days of the console.
In fact, the early days of the 360 showed an incredible amount of diversity across a number of genres - from Viva Pinata, Kameo, Blue Dragon etc.

As much as I love Firefly, I doubt it'll be a long term success as an MMO.
I want it to succeed, but the MMO market is in transition right now. WoW is the only 'big winner', with the rest fighting over scraps. When a high quality Star Wars MMO from one of the worlds most renowned devs is struggling, then realistically what chance does another Sci-Fi MMO have?
Good luck to them.
He's probably right. Rather than reigning in the graphical fidelity and going for rock solid 1080p and 60fps many devs will probably look to push graphics / physics / textures etc to the max - meaning the underlying game engines will still struggle.
Also, some games just don't need 60fps - such as strategy and puzzle.
I'm sure there's been a lot of gems this year - but 50! games that defined 2012?... I think that might be reaching a bit!
For me it's been a fairly average year, punctuated by a few surprises and disappointments.
My game of the year is probably Super Hexagon or Faster than Light. Also liked Borderlands 2 a lot.
Was hugely disappointed in Dishonored, Darksiders 2 and Diablo III. A little disappointed in the new Need for Speed Most...
This is a great feature for PS+ subscribers. I like how it downloads and installs the patches / updates, syncs trophies and has new firmware ready and waiting for install.
But I do think this should be a standard feature.
There is nothing more annoying than trying to jump in to an online game and having to wait for an update to download. If something impacts users ability to play the games they have bought in this way, then it should not be reserved for PS+...
I'm a bit more mixed on the DLC
I liked the Captain Scarlett pack and thought it was worth the money - the story and characters were ridiculous (in a good way), and whilst the missions didn't really add anything to the game, and the loot was nothing special, I did like the theme.
But the the Torgue pack is a bit boring and feels disjointed (not completed it yet).
Fingers crossed for the next DLC.
Molyneux was a developer / programmer / ideas guy first and foremost - and whilst he always got carried away with his hyperbole it wasn't until he became a corporate suit that he started getting the (deserved) bad press and reputation for talking utter BS.
This isn't a troll of Microsoft - but until Lionhead were bought by MS the games he had delivered for Lionhead and Bullfrog had been world class, and in some cases genre defining. (Dungeon Keeper, Populous, Black an...
Gears of War 1 was a great game, but #2 was over rated. Not played #3.
I think Halo as an IP is over rated, but Halo CE was an utter classic. The best playing FPS on console since GoldenEye on N64
Totally agree with Twilight Princess being over rated. It's my least favorite Zelda by a huge margin, and even put me off playing Skyward Sword for a long time
Mario is over saturated rather than over rated. Paper Mario is a really nice game...
@rainslacker
If they don't already, game development classes should really include basic / intermediate project management skills. It would infinitely help future development teams if everyone had rudimentary understanding of project management.
Good story.
Super Hexagon has the power to break minds like twigs. I only have to think of the game and flashes of colour splash behind my retinas and I start to hear the chip-tune music play.
It's awesome.
I've now got to the point where I start to play on the 3rd or 4th difficulty as a 'warm up' for attempting a high score on the easier one... It's amazing how slow the game feels on 'Hard' after playing at the h...
The problem is, without deadlines nothing would get released.
We may be talking about 'games' but these are products with hundreds or thousands of interdependent elements. The only way for a developer to be given the freedom to launch when ready is to have significant financial backing that allows this
Games are not art in the sense that an artist can take as much time as they want to produce something (although if the artist is on a commission there...
I really don't agree with the article. It misses the point...
Kickstarter is zero risk to the investor. A bad idea won't get funded; so why the hate?
People with ambition trying to get their game made. Are we really saying this is a bad thing? Even if the game looks terrible or is a lazy HD upgrade, the people involved are at least trying.
There's been a load of examples of games that have small niche followings that can not g...
Not great, but not that bad.
I'm glad that it eventually got released. It managed to retain the feel of those early era FPS games like the original Duke, Doom, Shadow Warrior etc.
I didn't like only having 2 weapons though. That was a big mistake.
Ultimately I got bored, so never never finished it.
Agree with every point in the article. I've not fired up DIII for a long time and doubt I will again.
It's a shame that the Torchlight light games and Demons Souls sold only a fraction of what D3 did.
