Considering they've been hyping this up for the whole show there really wasn't much new gameplay shown off. They basically combined both previous demos, which is odd because the planetwarp demo had a different intro at the Playstation event. Maybe Geoff wanted an extended demo and Insomniac/Sony weren't willing to show off much more at this point, so they just stitched the previous demos together.
I hope they figure out a good balancing for solo play. Make the bots too weak and they feel like they're standing in the way, make them too strong and you feel like you're being carried and your impact on the game is too small.
The instant character switching sounds like it could be cool, but I would've preferred to play with one character at a time. It's cool to know what Rocksteady is working on, but without gameplay it's hard to get excited.
Highly doubt it. While Nand flash has gotten a lot cheaper, it still has a big impact on the bill of materials for consoles. 2TB would make the digital edition much more expensive than the disc based console.
Another reason why I don't think there is anything to this rumor is that 2TB is not a native capacity, that should come out of a 12 channel interface when identical NAND flash chips are used across the board.
There is a reason why the PS5 has 825...
It might've hurt sales to some degree, but professional reviewers almost unanimously praising the game probably helped neutralize most of the influence of the review bombers. Death Stranding had a similar situation with review bombing, but it didn't have the luxury of being a sequel to a hugely successful game and the reviews weren't as one-sided. With Death Stranding it was also harder to pin down what kind of game it is, so it probably needed good reviews more than The Last of U...
We don't know the official naming yet. It's possible that they'll go with 21xx, but I think 30xx is much more likely, because they've already went from 10xx in Pascal to 20xx (and 16xx) in Turing. From a marketing perspective 21xx might not seem like a big enough leap. I don't see a reason why they wouldn't simply go to 30xx.
There is no point in overanalyzing the logic behind naming conventions. They are decided for marketing purposes only.
The 1080Ti turned out to be a long term beast. Pascal was a great improvement over the already great Maxwell architecture. The life of Pascal cards was prolonged by the relatively small jump from Maxwell to Turing in rasterization.
I'm still on the 970 which is definitely not ready for next gen games. The leaks are suggesting, that Nvidia and AMD will compete across all price ranges which will hopefully result in more affordable cards.

Those statements made the backlash much bigger than it needed to be. I'll never understand why Phil was hyping up the hardware 'advantages' and their lineup of games before the show, considering what they've shown were a bunch of pre-rendered trailers and some footage running on PC.
We might never find out what went wrong at Xbox Game Studios, but it's clear that there were some development issues with some of their first party lineup (mainly Halo and Fo...
Addendum: Just did a sanity check and sampled some parts of the available gameplay vids. 40-50fps seems about right for the older gameplay snippets in videos. The newer Combat Overview from the State of Play seems to run much closer to 60fps most of the time. There is however a section of that video where they talk about the spiral technique (around the 5:50 mark) that seems to use a 30fps source.
Unfortunately the Combat Overview trailer is only uploaded in 1080p so it'...
It's 4k but currently sub 60fps. The gameplay they've shown so far was running at 40-50fps. This video was uploaded in a 30fps container. It seems like they've downconverted the 60fps video source to fit a 30fps video container which effectively halved the 40-50fps to 20-25fps. Not sure why they did that. It makes it looks choppy as hell.
Personally I don't care because it's a looter slasher. I think the combat looks cool, I just can't get excited for the gameplay loop of loot-based games.
@Marquinho: Oh, I'm not suggesting that MS will leave the local gaming market once Xcloud is properly implemented. I'm just saying that they are generally aiming to shift towards a service based business model. Gamepass is a service and it doesn't rely on cloud gaming to work. xCloud will just be a tool to help them reach markets that would otherwise be unreachable.
Seems pretty obvious to me. They want to grow their market, by achieving hardware independence of the Xbox brand. The ultimate goal is to transform their business from a hardware/software based model to a service based model.
First they open up the console space by pushing cross-play, cross-platfrom games, backwards and forwards compatibility. Regular hardware revisions will turn their console space into a PC-like environment, but with a lower entry barrier. The console fun...
@DigitallyAfflicted &Bigbosss:
Makes sense. If the Xbox showcase was stronger, Sony might have felt more pressure to announce something big to steal some of the thunder. As it stands though, Microsoft's showcase didn't really move the needle and in some ways actually damaged the Series X hype. I can see why Sony would want to wait this one out and see what Microsoft does next, before making their next move.
Sony probably don't want to use State of Play for major announcements like this. We might get another PS5 centered event later this month. I don't see them sitting on this info for much longer if they wanna launch before December. They probably should get it out by September and start collecting preorders.
No major PS5 announcements planned.
I wouldn't say that high framerate games take advatage of next gen as much as possible. In a sense it's quite the opposite. Higher framerates mean smaller render budget. At 120fps you only have around 8ms to draw each frame.
With all else being equal, this means that the render- and simulation complexity has to be low enough to fit into this render budget. Aiming for comparatively low complexity means that the people working on the game have an easier job creating ...
The individual differences in skill and reaction times will usually be greater than the advantage that 120fps gives you over 60fps. I'd expect the fps difference to only manifest in the upper ranks of competetive play at which point most people will play on PC anyway.
They could of course separate the leaderboards or ranked queues by platform, but there has never been a level playing field on PC and it hasn't been much of a problem. Casuals won't care enough, an...
The LG C9 has been available for over a year now. While the chipset doesn't support HDMI 2.1 natively, it has a built in daughterchip to unlock full HDM 2.1 functionality. Incidentally it's one of the most popular high-end TVs of last year (this years model is the CX). Since then many other TVs with full HDMI 2.1 functionality have been released and sold so no, not everyone will have to upgrade. 'Next-gen ready' TVs have been around for a while now.
Sony are...
Well I'm sure the devs got the message. There is no point of beating a dead horse, but I also understand why people can't simply give Microsoft the benefit of the doubt any longer. That damage was self-inflicted and just shows how out of touch the marketing team of Microsoft is with their fans and the engineers and artists working on the games.
I simply cannot imagine a situation where nobody spotted the disparity between the official messaging and the footage they&...
I think they might've shown off a cool feature I anticipate some next gen games to use. The trailer starts with the title screen and when the player presses X, Ratchet and Clank are warped into the level with a little cutscene. Ratchet says: "We're back" and Clank says " And not far from where we last saw him". Transitions like these might help put the player right back into action without feeling to abrupt.
For Spiderman they could for example s...
