All the people that I know, have played with (thousands?), and discuss the game with (r/DestinyTheGame) that have been supporting Destiny since Day 1 have done so by buying each expansion. If you didn't make it past the first few weeks, or gave up a few months ago, thats fine, but you probably didn't keep up with the now three expansions, so that support is... what exactly? But they've been locking people out how haven't bought each expansion since The Dark Below... This isn't new. And its a little more complicated than just a "server check", the nightfalls are end game strikes that require level 40. The max level a Vanilla player can get is 34.
The playlists have been evolving with each DLC. People not able to play certain Nightfall or weeklies has been around since December, which are just playlists for content that they have access to. And to be honest, with how many changes have come with this "expansion" it feels like it is Destiny 2.
I'm opposed to checkpoints, but there has to be another way to prevent issues like what you experienced. Maybe like the Trials ticket where it keeps track of the number of rounds you completed on each level. If you jump into someone's fireteam who is at Skolas, that doesn't allow you to wipe, leave, and share that checkpoint with everyone, which is what they are trying to avoid and for good reason.

Have you attempted the Weekly Heroic Strike yet? That was absolutely intense. It took us a good 45 to 60 minutes to work through the kinks for the first encounter and get our teamwork down, and it was awesome when S.Prime finally went down another hour later.

Well on their website there are approximately 30 games for purchase, that's a few short of what I saw in store.
Of those 30 there are about 25 that I have no interest AT ALL in playing. I would rent a handful, and there are a couple that I would consider buying discounted, but even then I'm not sold. To anyone that said the versions would be "too close" were way off base. There is no comparison. I own the Xbone version, love it. I rented the 360 version, and I would have loved it if I wasn't spoiled by the Xbone version.
