They missed the #1 fail: $40 retail price point for games. That's a huge catalyst for the piracy problem.
And #2: No right analog nub.
Fix those two and the PSP would dominate the market.
To the original author Re UMD: The PSP is pretty old... it was BLEEDING edge for a handheld at the time, UMD stores over a gig which was MONSTROUS for a handheld. Memsticks and ROM carts @ that capacity would have cost megabucks just for the media and digital distro would not ...
So let's see:
Software publisher gets to claim any pirated copies are "lost sales".
Check.
Pirates get game for free.
Check.
PC's rep as haven for pirates.
Totally intact.
Legit consumers grabbing ankles. Taking it from behind.
Check.
Yep. It's situation normal here. Ubisoft/DRM FTL.
I hope it's either Haze 2 or a Duke Nukem title.
Fraggen - VP of Thinking Outside the Box.
I don't know what they're paying this guy, but I can say this: It's not enough.
@1.15: Think: "Call of Uncharted" and you'll get the basic idea.
Actually, I'm not (heart)ing this as much as I thought I would, the vehicles are awesome but the individual player mechanics feel "off" somehow... I'll stick with it though, it might just take some getting used to like Killzone 2 did....
That said, the game's still a "buy", though. I just haven't completely dropped MAG which I thought this game might make me do... On day one, I usually don't get much desire to play something else...
@Lich120: Blizzard was owned by Vivendi, Vivendi games and Activision merged. The resulting company was called Activision Blizzard due to Blizzard's AWESOME reputation. Now: Blizzard is Activision. Activision is Blizzard. No matter what you call it, Bobby Kotick is the boss. Like it or not.
The IW guys just learned that lesson the hard way, in fact.
Insiders are saying it's going to be:
Call of Diablo: Modern Warcraft Hero.
Well, I think it's an amazing title, anyway.
Actually, you're behind, dude. They just announced two new level packs for God of War IV.
Sweet: more sh*t to buy!! I (heart) spending money.
You know that the PS4 is going to have a vending machine dollar bill acceptor built right into the unit, right? Please insert $20 to play the other half of the game you already "own".
@Rob Hornecker: This "extra" stuff is DRM, dude, it's not some gift from the publisher. Your $60 paid for it. It's content they developed as part of the main game but keep off the disc to force registration and lock...
I dunno if KZ2 was revolutionary or not, but I can say this: it PWNed. It may be the best designed FPS I've ever played. That includes C1, BTW.
C2 being as good a GAME as KZ2? We should hope to be so lucky!
Anyone who's ever written a piece of software before knows that dimeing the CPU or GPU meter does not mean you've got the most out of the hardware. I can write a program that does nothing and dimes the CPU on a system.
These comments sound like PURE marketing hype/BS. For users, maxing out a system means making a product that has the best possible results the hardware can achieve, i.e. **efficiency** taken to its ultimate conclusion.
Unfortunately, there's pretty muc...
IW is a wholly owned subsidiary of Activision. I.e. Activision OWNS them. They don't owe them any f*cking royalties. Just like my employer doesn't owe me if they license something I patent @ work. They own the IP I create because they own the company I work for.
The co-founders of IW should have (and almost certainly DID big time) made THEIR money when the buyout happened. Those guys will bail with golden parachutes. They'll be pissed but rich which is more than most abused corpo...
I think it's kind of ironic how IW has been viciously hated and slandered by a large majority of the people here and elsewhere on the net after MW2, and now, suddenly, with the current turn of events, an ousting of current management is seen as a big tragedy.
If IW management wrecked MW2 as badly as everyone claims, why not fire their asses? Don't get me wrong Bobby K is a pure douchebag and Activision sucks under him, but I find the sudden (hearting) of IW ironic after seeing so...
The article would be even more hilarious if it was titled something like:
Cliff Bleszinski states "I like young boys, internet!"
but then the content was all the same.
You doods need to think outside the box: Super Mario Universe PS3
The clock rollover autofixed it, and they'll roll it into a firmware or similar update sometime over the next four years. No biggie at this point, really.
@darthv72: Re limiting game size in free accoutns: I hope they don't do anything that retarded. It'd be horrifically stupid to suddenly start limiting and taking away existing capabilities from the free service.
I think It's all about game RENTALs and MMO-esque opt-in services. I think the core multiplayer features should remain free (just like on a PC ;) ).
They should buy Infinity Ward from Activision! :)
Sony helped the situation along with the expensive UMD format and high retail game prices.
Also, excessively locking down the system made people want to break it open even more. The Custom Firmware that enables piracy is not all about piracy exclusively. A lot of the Custom Firmware features and homebrew software programs are AMAZINGLY useful and still, after years of updates, most of those features and utilities are not available on a device with Sony firmware.
