MS is a software developer. You are a fool. They will never be able to produce technology that "Sony won't have for 5 years". Sony is a hardware manufacturer with it's own chip production facilities, and they are closely tied to IBM (world leader in supercomputers).

MS entered save money mode with 360 (no blu-ray, hard drive, still charging for online (even raising the cost)) and then tried again to milk their aging console (a year older than ps3) with kinect.
MS has "opened" all their cards. their lie about what kinect would be has been exposed, and people have realized it doesn't do half of what they said it would. Milo? Object scanning? more than 2 players? kinect owners are only just now getting to sit down while playin...
you seem to ignore the discounts you get on psn content, which you do get to keep regardless of whether or not you stay with ps+. That alone pays for the subscription many, many times over every year. The free games are icing on the cake from there.
Other things you lose if you do not keep your live gold subscription:
video chat
voice chat
access to netflix or other pay services
online play

keep in mind the gyro/accelerometer in ngp is far better than that which is in iphone.
technically ngp could support move. it has the camera, and the ability for bluetooth connectivity. if they put a video out on this thing the possibilities would be endless.
but the real hacks didn't start happening until other OS was removed. the USB jailbreaks, etc.
this was just a case of them finally cracking the last line of defense.
sony can do just like MS did with the 360, make new ps3's with hardware modded security (like 360 did to fix the jtag exploit). ban consoles caught cheating or pirating. I think the lawsuits and such, however, are too far. especially after that federal judge ruled it legal to jailbreak ...

why hack it when it had other OS most of that time? as soon as other OS was removed, it was hacked very quickly.
thanks to sony for making a console security system that was so easily hackable. that's who. if it wasn't GeoHot, it would have been someone else (remember Geo didn't act alone, many others were just as close and made progress that allowed Geo to do what he did).
this was inevitable. it was a flaw baked into the ps3 since day 1, waiting to be found. don't hate the ones who found it. hate the pirates that exploited it.
L3/R3 may very well be in there, as for L2 and R2, the touch pad on the back of the system could very easily be used to make a L2, R2, L4, R4, and beyond. the touch pad is the same size as the screen, so if they put a button on the screen, you'd just have to press it from behind (as if you were pushing up on it from under the screen) and the touch pad would detect it and trigger the button push.
Full PS3 remote play is possible this way.
