typo. that said, the medical field is one area that could probably benefit from tech like kinect a good bit. glad to see it being put to good use.
MS isn't "helping out", one of their tools just happens to be good at it. I'm sure they still had to buy it. None the less, a cool use of the tech.
You're right, the Japanese won't care much at this point, anything they can get is a good thing, but if I were one of them I'd be furious to know they tried to profit from my pain.
That said, donating $2m after pulling a stunt like that is still a good thing, but I don't see it as genuine at all. They revealed their true intentions right off the bat. They didn't care to donate a worthwhile amount (coming from a multi-billion $ corporation), and to add insu...
i'm definitely not trying to downplay the importance of helping... we all need to be helping somehow. i just still have a really sour taste in my mouth from that stunt they pulled earlier with the bing promotion controversy.
Exactly what came to mind when I saw this. They totally killed their credibility with that stunt. "We'll help Japan, but only if you help us promote our search engine first".
I actually would be rather impressed with it had they not totally screwed up by trying to profit off of the tragedy first. Now by doing this it just proves they are trying to save face. If you don't know what I'm talking about, they recently had to apologize after asking people on twitter to post links to bing on their pages, and every person that promoted their search engine for them they'd donate $1, up to $100k. A very tasteless way to try to profit from this tragedy.
...
Not a tech that could only run on 360 (the title kinda implies that), as it's a software thing (I saw no mention of hardware being used that PS3/PC couldn't easily do), however it is still really cool and I like the screens they've posted to show it off. It's limited to certain game types, as it has limitations the developers have to design around, however it's a cool tech none the less. Kinda like the "mega textures" Carmack was all about not all that long ago. ...
you shut up... one department that is part of a multi-billion dollar corporation couldn't go to their bosses and say "hey, we should donate a good chunk to help out."?
Instead, they had to turn it into "hey, let's donate a tiny, tiny, fraction of a fraction of our company's total wealth, but also use this disaster as a marketing tool to drive hits on bing!
It's not like one guy made this decision, it had to be cleared through hi...
oh, so I guess the people who were offended enough to write this article, and the ones who pushed MS to apologize, were only pissed because someone told them to be?
Epic headslap. My faith in humanity just dropped a little more.
B1663r ... looks like MS lovers never miss an opportunity to defend even the most atrocious actions they commit.
Seriously, how could one defend them trying to profit on tens of thousands of people dead or missing, 255 earthquakes/aftershocks in 3 days, one of the biggest tsunamis ever, 3 nuclear meltdowns, and a volcanic eruption caused by the quakes? It's a downright apocalypse for them right now, and MS is only interested in getting clicks for it's worthless search...
I never saw MS donating to us during Katrina (gulf coast resident here).
As for sony donating sony radios... do you expect them to buy a competitor's radios to give away instead of looking in their own warehouses? come on...
And Sony didn't say "buy a radio, and we'll donate one to japan".
$100k is a ridiculously small donation for a company that makes billions and billions. We're talking less than pocket change... t...
the title should read earthquake/tsunami/subsequent earthquakes/nuclear meltdown/volcanic eruption.
The funniest part about it is, the way they lazily threw together the move version (gesture based, not using 1:1 tracking at all), kinect actually is way more than capable of that. So, in that regard, this article is actually correct.
Had they gone for the table tennis style 1:1 tracking approach, then it would have been an issue of kinect not quite being up to par. However, I'll agree with the author that in this particular instance, it really was them just being plain ...
B1663r, nice try, but fail.
you have no actual numbers to go by... just "they did this so it must mean that, so no matter how you cut it this is happening".
the extent some fanboys will go to "prove" their delusion is amazing sometimes.
that was never what I was trying to say. I was just saying this isn't that "big step forward" example of a game kinect can do that other's cannot...
the subject is about a game available on 2 consoles. the article goes to say that this is a great example of a core experience for kinect, which is true in itself, but when that same experience is also available on another system using camera tech from 2007 and it costs a fraction of what you'd have to pay to play it on the other system, it kinda negates the fact that this is a big step forward for a core kinect game.
It's more of a big step forward for camera control...
Kinect won software? what are these fools smoking? No core games, a bunch of casual shovelware.... sure. I'm calling bullshit.
About half of all major franchises coming to PS3 have some sort of move support. Can kinect say the same? Nope. Have any existing games been updated to allow kinect support? no.
It's like they just rushed through a few bullet points and did all they could to make the score close, but make kinect still come out on top. I actual...
What doesn't cut it about Kinect not being accurate enough to detect minor wrist movements? If you're going to put "top spin" on a ball, the controller needs to be able to detect it. That's why they didn't bother. no matter how accurate the camera is, it won't be able to detect tiny twists of the wrist. plus they knew people would look goofy trying to play laggy handball.
Not to say their implementation of move was much better. I tried the demo, ...
I agree, a step in the right direction, though it isn't even exclusive. When a $40 camera can do the same game the $150 camera can, it says something.
I'd have to call that "PS3 was the lead console during development" into question, TreMillz. I am a gaming journalist that attended a THQ press event for Homefront recently, and they had Xbox 360 banners everywhere, Xbox 360 napkins, nothing but xbox 360's on the show floor, and not a single PS3 running Homefront to be seen. PS3's were there, but playing video trailers. The whole place was Xbox land (this was in new york at THQ's "gamers day" event).
