I think this opinion piece is especially relevant right now given all the massive game releases in this holiday season. Say what you will about Jim Sterling, the man delivers a searing commentary on the state of the gaming community here. He doesn't really touch on the metacritic "score dragging" in this video, but he's absolutely right in regard to review criteria and gamer expectation.
Devs make mistakes all the time, and few teams are under the pump in the same way Treyarch is. They play second fiddle to a team that makes the most successful and polished Call of Duty titles and need to consistently deliver the goods on arguably the biggest entertainment release ever. Every year.
Black Ops had its problems, without question, but you can't say that Treyarch didn't listen or make a concerted effort to balance and tweak the game in a way that would ple...
What kind of opinion article is this? Looks like it was written by a grade school student.
I still think this article is relevant due to the fact that it's logical. Digital Foundry don't hate on either game, they're simply great at accomplishing different things for different players. Try telling that to any number of the members here.
Call of Duty is probably the greater console title, Battlefield 3 is easily the better PC title.
I haven't had too many connection issues in either the PS3 or 360 version thus far.
Frankly, it's the spawns that need to be tended to.
I'm guessing people thought I was defending Bobby Kotick?
Only at N4G.
Anyone seen the movie Moneyball? Bobby Kotick is in it. I guess in some way he's poking fun at himself. It's super ironic.
After the dead-serious tone of GTAIV and the obscene amount of calls I was getting from Roman, I decided to pick up Saints Row 2. Absolutely loved it.
If the trailers are anything to go by, Saints Row 3 looks to have buried the second game in just about every way.
I'll be picking up GTAV when the time comes, but there is a part of me that misses the zany antics of III through to San Andreas. Saints Row seems to have taken that mantle and rolled with it. C...
That is insane if true. I'm not entirely sure I believe it. Do they have a linked source to the press release anywhere?
I'm sure it sold big, but 3.8 mil in a day?
In all honesty, the matchmaking hasn't changed that much from MW2. Host Migration has been dealt with FAIRLY well (occasionally bogus), but every now and then I'm thrown into a foreign lobby to compete with not only the best players Hamburg has to offer, but 2 bar connections as well.
I hope Infinity Ward are prepared to patch the game this time around, because they still have a bit of work to do.
Generally the people that give any game a zero on metacritic either haven't played the game, or don't own the system needed to play the game.
In short, it's a trolling effort, and the Call of Duty series is never short of that.
If you look at the visuals for the most popular multi-player games of the last 15 years, none of them have been graphical powerhouses.
Starcraft, Counter Strike, Timesplitters 2, GoldenEye, World of Warcraft, Battlefield 1942, Call of Duty 4 etc.
None of them were mind-blowing visual experiences at the time, they were just extremely polished, addictive games.
Hell, Valve still use the Source engine, why doesn't anyone cry about that? Mayb...
It probably shouldn't have taken them this long to figure out a mode like Kill Confirmed, but it's none the less the best game type they've released in a while. Deters camping and promotes smart play and map knowledge.
I'm still not entirely sure how the multi-player will pan out. I'll wait for a couple of months before I can completely understand where it's headed, and whether or not the community will ruin the fun.
This was never released in Australia and I only ever got to enjoy this game at a friends house every now and then.
One of the most underrated masterworks in gaming history.
To all Australians, please pick it up.
Because Call of Duty isn't about the visuals. How do people not realise this yet?
Consider any of the biggest multiplayer games in the last decade and even further back. Graphics are a shell for the crux of the game. Starcraft, Diablo II, Counter Strike, Quake, Goldeneye, Timesplitters etc. None of them were mind-blowing visual packages, they just played beautifully.
It's obvious that you're trying to get a rise out of people man, but really? Did you want to go to any effort at all with that troll post? Honestly though, who actually gives a crap about midnight launch numbers? At any given time I find it tough to get into the servers I like for BF3 because they're always packed. It's one of the best multiplayer experiences on the market and you're only withholding yourself from it because you're either 12 years old, or pigeon-holing...
I received a heap of disagrees, but nothing that actually refuted anything that I'd mentioned.
Obviously I'm going against the grain of popular opinion here. By N4G's standards, I'm blaspheming beyond comprehension, but I stand by my claims, and ask anyone to refute the things I've pointed out as being wrong. I think they're all logical problems with the game.
I should probably clarify. I still think it's a solid title in any case. I'm only disappointed in the fact that it's so regressive, and that I wanted it to be great. I never really thought it would be better than Uncharted 2. I just expected it to deliver at a certain level, but it brought back all the gameplay issues I had with Drake's Fortune, which is pretty inexcusable.
I respect your thoughts if you enjoyed it. All power to you. Perhaps BIGGEST disappoint...
There is something hilarious like this in every Battlefield game. I probably wouldn't even feel the need to patch it, given how impractical it is. It's just funny shenanigans reminiscent of Battlefield 1942's standing on plane wings. I mean, you can argue that it can get you to difficult high spots, but it's nothing that a well placed parachute drop can't do.
