ape007 -- You're right, I shouldn't have been so broad in my statement.

I prefer the remote/nunchuck for console FPS. The remote w/M+ makes TW10 the best golf sim yet created.

But a traditional game pad works better for certain other games. Racing games suck with tilt controls, IMO. I like playing Madden with a traditional controller (although the "Call Your Shot" feature is a good idea). Motion controls are not necessary for fighting games (even Smash ...

I'm not as peeved on the 0.1 point deduction, but in essence, I do agree with you on the gaming media altogether. This gen has had the most uneven reviews of any generation of consoles. It's not just a matter of subjectivity; if a reviewer says a game mechanic is broke when it isn't, that's just lying (see: MWR, IGN).

It really hit home with me with the Metroid Trilogy. Some outlets rated Corruption HIGHER than the full Trilogy. ...so you add two AAA titles with improved cont...

Yeah, the gaming media is just completely unreliable this gen. I have no idea what happened. It's like the Twilight Zone. Fanboyism has permeated editorial teams like a disease.

Heck, I'm in LOVE with Twilight Princess, but even I know that game probably shouldn't have gotten so many perfect scores.

If it's a first-party game, or it's a marquee third-party title with a huge marketing push, good reviews are easy to come by.

Otherwise, you're on your ow...

Y'know, GI gave Metroid Prime 3 a great review, and gave big ups to the controls.

They did again when the Trilogy was reviewed...but with one caveat. Look at the second opinion.

Didn't have the balls to give a first-party title a bad grade overall, because they'd have gotten called on their ignorance about the c...

I honestly gave up on GI because of their review for NMH. Up until that point, I had trusted GI's reviews. Although I started disagreeing with them more and more, I thought they were still fair and objective. So I read their NMH review and didn't buy the game.

Huge, huge, huge mistake.

They were so wrong (and inconsistent, they singled out violence in this game while celebrating it in games like GoW) that it was the straw that broke the camel's back for me.

I have no idea how you get disagrees on this one. Saying IR/pointer is superior to dual analog is NOT controversial. It's FACT. The same way that a mouse/keyboard is superior to dual analog is a fact, and the same way that the remote/nunchuck doesn't one-up a mouse/keyboard setup. And yes, the same way that a PS3 or 360 have better graphics than Wii. Those things go past subjectivity; facts are facts.

OTOH, I can see how people prefer the high def consoles for FPS. They lik...

I think part of it was that developers expected Wii to fail. They moved on and made their investments in upgraded game engines for the HD consoles. They could squeeze more out of each console last gen when the hardware was similar.

Now, they aren't building with that in mind. They're building up to the standards of the 360 or PS3, then porting down for the Wii.

OTOH, a developer like Retro is building UP only; they're not starting with a far superior graphical eng...

blindfromthesun -- I haven't had many problems at all with the framerate. In fact, drops are almost non-existent.

You WILL encounter some skips/drops if you max out your cursor sensitivity to make it twitchy...then play the game like a regular setup.

I have had maybe three drops in single player, but I haven't turned the difficulty up all the way. I imagine with more intelligent AI ganging up on me, the game will encounter some drops from too much action onscreen. ...

quantum -- I'm slowly getting better. You're absolutely right...this game makes TCon feel almost arcade-y. And that's great in its own way, but this is a lot more challenging. You can't run right into a firefight with your sawed off and expect to kill three noobs. I'd gotten used to that style, lol. Now I'm back to playing as a noob under different circumstances.

What I find really interesting is that I've actually had to back off of the controls. I had Conduit maxed out, a...

Hey, 89 isn't bad. With a score that good, we're getting down to small quibbles with the reviewer.

That said, I would've thought the 4-player would've counted for more in the review. I get that it isn't online, but still, it's something different to an old formula. They put Mario on spheres in space and put COD in a modern setting, and that equals GOTY, but adding in multiplayer equals a B-grade?

Again, it's still a very good score. But the IGN Wii team are makin...

I'm pretty sure that Nintendo can make great platformers in their sleep.

It's just what they do.

Decent score, and honestly what I think the game deserves. But these three things don't make sense:

1.) "9.5" score in graphics. I mean...really?

2.) "Better than COD:W@W." It's a bigger game, with better multiplayer and more customizable controls.

3.) "Conventional controllers handle first-person shooters much more effectively than the Wii Remote, but otherwise its a very faithful port."

There's subjectiv...

"General movement and combat is intuitive and responsive, though the slower-than-usual turning speed makes it trickier to beat a hasty retreat when avoiding grenades. Tweaking sliders only improves the situation to a degree.

"The controls are far from the best, and no amount of menu sliders can mask the fact that the game just doesn't feel at home on Nintendo's platform."

I honestly thought the PS3 would be number one. It's still selling well, but I thought Sony's price cut would give them a little more momentum. It looks like Nintendo's cut kinda negated that.

quantumriian -- You're right about developers pushing the Wii with games like Corruption and Conduit. But those are ground-up affairs. A game is always going to look better when it's built specifically for one console and plays to that hardware's strengths.

This was a port, with code intended for much more powerful hardware. All things considered, I think Treyarch did a very good job.

Also, this game has a LOT more going on than Conduit. There are more maps, the ...

Silent Hill getting an 8 is encouraging. All of the vids and screen caps I've seen have looked promising.

COP getting a 4? Ouch.

After playing 3 hours of COD:MWR last night, I think they're about right with their rating. 9 might be a bit high, but it's impressive on Wii.

"While it is, indeed, impressive that they were able to fit it all onto the Wii, it's also just as obvious that their goal wasn't to push the system to its limits."
-------

I'm not sure if that's the case. MW is a lot bigger than a game like Conduit, and has a lot more action going on with enemies than something like Prime. That all does come at a cost, and when you're porting something instead of building from the ground up, compromises have to be made.

Before anyone hyperventilates, he's talking sales and market share, not raw tech.

And he has a point. Nintendo is technically in their second gen of motion control with Motion +, and they could conceivably put out a killer app w...

RE4 was so much better with IR/pointer that I'd at least consider playing RE5 again with overhauled controls. Still would prefer a ground-up Wii game, but any good TPS would be nice. The system is starved for them.
