You can say something over and over, but that doesn't mean it's true.
Yes, NPD guesstimates for Wal-Mart. And they also cop to only being able to reliably track for about 60% of U.S. sales.

No, VGC doesn't just make up numbers. ...
Alright...lets take this one slow...
What is standard DVD resolution? 480p.
What is Wii's limit for resolution outupt? 480p.
...so you want to play 480p DVDs, but consider anything less than 720p garbage?
And why the heck would you pay $250 at launch for something that would mostly act as a DVD player for your bedroom when you can buy one for $20 or $30 at Wal-Mart?
And your "old TV" in your bed room? How old? 720p isn't ...
I understand that people say "oh, a cheap licensing fee, that's not a big deal."
But you add $10 here and $10 more there, and suddenly you've cut into your profit margin (if you still have one). It doesn't make much business sense, especially considering that everyone pretty much already has a DVD player.
Man, where did this game come from? I heard almost nothing about it before seeing it pop up on a few "games of 2010" lists late last year. It's been getting pretty solid reviews...and $39 is enticing...
It does make you wonder, doesn't it? Trolling message boards as pirate marketing...
Then again, you can never underestimate the power of fanboyism. It's the tina of gaming.
lol
Wow. If you're going to troll, at least put some more effort into it.
The worst part of NSMB are the graphics? You mean the graphics that look better than all of the other 2D Mario games you like?
How are those games so great, despite dated graphics, but NSMB is worse primarily because of having BETTER graphics than those old games?
If you just don't like a game, fine. That's all you have to say. You don't have to invent half-baked r...
indiemike -- I agree with you for the most part. The only caveat I'd add in there is that when the Wii launched, HDTV sets weren't as affordable as they are now. You could go to Wal-Mart and buy an old bulky SDTV for cheap.
Now the prices have fallen drastically, more and more people are buying them, and you can't even find SDTVs.
The Wii's specs and price made perfect sense considering when it was launched. Now the market will decide how much longer those specs h...

How dare you try to talk about the business sense of not playing DVDs, bob!
Yeah, MadWorld was kinda like Mortal Kombat...
...if you were to subtract almost all of the challenging fighting, and replace it with a long string of maiming/fatalities.
Good art style. Good team for the commentators. Decent storyline. But it just wasn't that fun, IMO.
Hold on...advertising and marketing are an "overused excuse," but the install base is a valid metric? Are you serious? Then every single game that didn't put up GTA-like numbers on the PS2 was a relative failure. THAT is why the userbase talking point is bunk.
Y'know what third party Wii games have sold? Established IP. COD moves about a million each time out. Star Wars: Force Unleashed? Million seller. RE? The same (even Darkside Chronicles isn't selling that ...
Wait a minute...so you're saying bad-to-mediocre games are SUPPOSED to sell well? We should encourage developers to make bad games?
That just doesn't make a lot of sense. When I buy a bad game, I become highly suspicious of the next game in the series (Driv3r pretty much ruined that series for me).
Selling well is also relative. NMH sold well relative to its budget, as bob said. But because the game was GOOD, it developed a cult following and a word-of-mouth repu...
A "very long life" could also mean a life like the PS2 -- where the console still sells well, even after a new one is put on the market.
Not digging the system is cool be me, but the business model obviously is working (and since you migrated over to PC...I would say the once-vibrant era of PC gaming has narrowed considerably and become much more insular and shooter-oriented...unless you wanna include flash games).
Nintendo didn't make much of a gamble, either. As bob says, they've been turning a profit just fine, not taking losses. Even if Wii wasn't a huge seller (and pulled in GC numbers), Nintendo wouldn't b...
I'm trying to figure out how you got a disagree on this one...
Because pandas are cute, maybe?
I know. A game developer willing to say that the game he's responsible for making may not sell well...because of his decisions as a game designer?
Kinda refreshing, isn't it?
For some reason, the buck stops everywhere but the developer or publisher when a game fails. And sometimes, they're justified in that (Okami). Other times...not so much.
NPD is always different because they track for the U.S. and Canada only.

VGC adds in Japan and "other" (EU, Australia, etc.).
And you DO know that NPD only guesstimates for Wal-Mart, right? That's kind of a big deal.
But no one says VGC is 100% accurate. They do overtrack. First week/month s...
Y'know, I sympathize with Kawa...but he's only half right. Sometimes mediocre (to put it nicely) games sell really well. For instance:
http://www.vgchartz.com/gam...
But other times? Not so much. Capcom lucked out once with Umbrella Chronicles. They should've looked at the sales for RE rail shooters like Dead Aim and Survivor 2 before deciding to dip into that well again.
Actually, MadWorld has slowly, agonizingly made its way to about 400K lifetime sales. Considering its budget (an unsophisticated black-and-white 480i game), it's at least made a modest profit.

It also did well enough to make Platinum consider a sequel.

“We are confident the Wii home entertainment console has a very long life in front of it.”
------------------
That's what we call an ambiguous statement, folks. I mean, the PS2 has had a long life, too.
2011 or 2012 may not be "soon" by the standards of gaming analysts, but I'd be surprised if we don't see a successor to Wii by then.
Nintendo managed to UNDERshoot their estimate by over 800,000 consoles.

800-frickin-thousand.
To get our heads around that, look at NPD from earlier this year. Here's July:
