You beat me to it, bob. It's not just hacking a game on a console...it's having a frickin' emulator to boot.
(And it's not like the Dolphin emulator worked that great even a year or two ago. I remember the clips of Prime 3 on Dolphin, and the framerate was atrocious.)
Eh. It's sharper, but I don't really think it makes a world of difference. It's a 2D Mario platformer with a simple graphical style. Those tend to age alright. Do people go around saying "man, I wish Mario 3 was in high def?" No, they just say that the game is awesome. NSMB is no different.
Ian -- I think they're probably doing it in order to do some other type of collector's edition in the future (maybe upscaled resolution for a future HD Nintendo console). With the special edition we already got, I think it's safe to say that some people at Nintendo think very, very highly of these games.
Then again, it could be just to clear off shelf space and to not have confusion with three Metroids (Corruption, Trilogy, M:OM) on store shelves at once.
Yep. It's probably the only game that I've bought and was actually excited about its PACKAGING.
This is your first 'Troid, bob? Ya gotta let me know which Prime game is your favorite. I've bounced around between all three, but Echoes is probably tops with me right now.
(And you gotta DL Super Metroid!)
A Wii exclusive that's already a hit, to boot (pouring more salt in the fanboy wounds).
I do wonder how it'll do in Europe and America, though. Apparently Nintendo will help out with marketing in Europe.
Makes me wonder if Nintendo plans on putting out another edition, TBH.
I mean, I've probably bought three versions of The Godfather, and a couple of remastered versions of Kind of Blue. It works for releases in other media, so why not games? I could see a GOW Collection-type re-release for the Metroid Trilogy on a future HD Nintendo console.
That said...if I'm completely off base, I'm VERY happy I already bought the discontinued one. And if someone bought it on sa...
No friend codes? Win.
Wow. Boz likes a Wii game.
I'd like a good flying game for Wii, but I'll be savoring Metroid Trilogy (again) before picking up NMH2 (when I finally get back to my frickin' apartment). But this one has been on my radar.
I think a game's rating is probably the most arbitrary factor to its fun level.
An M-rating sure as heck didn't make Driv3r a good game, the same way an R-rating doesn't mean a film is any good. Dr. Strangelove is rated PG, but I'd say it's a far more mature film than an R-rated slasher movie. (Likewise, I consider the Metroid Prime Trilogy more mature than a lot of M-rated shooters.)
In the best mature titles, usually the most "adult" thing about them is...
Shh...no talking sense allowed, bob.
I'm actually shocked at COD:MWR's sales. It'll probably get adjusted a bit after a month or two, but it's selling amazingly well for a two-year old game with no marketing.
And for the life of me, I don't know when "mature" gaming came to encompass ALL of hardcore gaming. M-rated games certainly have their big share of the market (I love GTA as much as the next person), but the rating alone doesn't make them "core,...
Aquarius -- What would it take for you to think of Metroid as mature? What, it needs swearing, more blood and some sexual references? I'd call the Prime trilogy much more mature than the vast majority of mindless and mediocre shooters of this gen and last.
I've never understood people who think "mature" equals "hardcore gamer." Core games used to actually be challenging, hard games. I'd call Megaman 9 a core game, easily.
If third parties want...
Nah. It's fashionable to hate on the Wii right now (the PS2 got the same type of treatment last gen; it comes with the territory of being on top). So any little snide comment gets blown out of proportion.
Capcom already apologized, and big N and Cap will kiss and make up with MH:Tri. But no one will wanna talk about that, either.
Guys, keep in mind that the derogatory comments came from the boss of Capcom France, and the larger European division has already apologized.

Why apologize? Because Nintendo will be helping to push Capcom's MH:Tri in Europe.

Hatch -- Only with component cables? The problem doesn't show on old composite cables? I guess the simplest thing to do is to save everything to an SD card (or three, or four).
As to Wii's graphics...we can definitely see more than we already have. It's souped-up tech from last gen, but it IS souped up. With Corruption...well, it was supposed to be a launch title (and it makes me wonder how different games on Wii could've looked if it was the standard from day one).
Lau...
Agreed. Higher resolution on a handheld doesn't mean high def; and really, with smaller screens, it's not as necessary.
I do wonder about what types of games it'll get, though. The GBA was a treasure trove of great games. I'm away from my Wii right now, and have my trusty old school GBA to keep me company. Metroid Fusion is just as good now as it was back when I first played it.
According to Ubi, that's the plan...

I gotta say, as much as I'm looking forward to Motion+ with RS2, the Lyn engine looks really impressive, too.
Arius -- The one card Nintendo has yet to show is Retro.
Maybe it's because I'm such a Prime junkie, but if the marquee Nintendo title of 2011 would be a Retro game, that alone makes 2011 a good year, IMO.
...unless they're cooking up something for Nintendo's next console down in Austin...
Mario, Metroid and Zelda in the same year would be legendary (if there are no delays).
I was mentioning to hatch down below that I don't think this has ever happened before -- new console versions of the big three all released in one year -- but I think I'm wrong (2002 got Prime, Sunshine, and WW, if I'm not mistaken).
But add to that the possibility of Pikmin 3, or Retro's project, or the possibility of a new handheld Metroid (Nintendo has a habit of releasing a...
Looking at the games on Wii for 2010...even first party stuff alone...I think Nintendo just pwned Matt Cassamania at IGN for his "Nintendo is lazy" article.
No, Matt...firing your three biggest guns in the same year isn't lazy.
And we still don't know what the heck Retro is working on, or the status of Pikmin 3.
EDIT: I'm with Scuba on Goldeneye. We've gotten rumors and little else.
This line pretty much nails it:
"Game critics are completely ambivalent towards the Wii."
Not all critics, of course, but a chunk of them seem to be. I remember reading an IGN "10 games to look forward to in 2010" article, and Other M didn't even make the list. The first 3D third person Metroid doesn't make the list? I can't think of anything else to call that except pure ambivalence.
And then there's GI, who simply can't play a ga...
