His ranking is pretty much spot on for me (except for Zero). However, I will admit to being an old school resident evil fan. I'm not so far gone that I am demanding the return of tank controls, but I do like the slower, less actiony more atmospheric titles. I suspect that there are a lot of us out there like this.
Nevertheless, Resident Evil is more of an action series than a horror series. Most of the fans would probably put Village and 4 at the top and 1, 2 and 7 at t...
This comment thread is interesting. While I tend to agree with the game's apologists that the core experience was very good. There was more wrong here than just bugs. The first act felt a bit rushed, the fixer missions felt like they were ripped from an Ubisoft game, and the game's combat mechanics were poorly balanced. It was still a very satisfying action rpg if you could look past all of that, but I can hardly blame people for refusing to do so.
However, this ar...
Yeah. All the backwards compatibility nonsense means nothing if you can't play classics like Sanitarium, Fallout 1 and 2, or Planescape on your Microsoft Series 365/2 Days Dream Drop Distance. If you really want to cover all your bases, get a PS5 and Switch for new exclusives and get a decent PC to play all the wonderful indies and classic titles on Steam and GOG. If by some miracle, Starfield is actually decent, Microsoft will have a version that can run on a half way decent PC. You can ...
It will get a lot better once developers start building games exclusively for RT. Shamus Young has a great YouTube video on the potential of the technology. Check it out sometime.
Most of the games we are seeing really just add the feature in to traditionally rendered titles to make glass and water look prettier.
I know I’m going to be roasted for this, but CyberPunk on PC actually did a pretty good with RT. Digital foundry showed off the differences and ...
Remember that only one of the next Gen consoles can really do raytracing. The Series S isn’t really capable of handling it. While the Series X can definitely do so, most of Microsoft’s sales have been for the more affordable console. The Switch obviously can’t handle it either.
If you were a third party developer you would want to have a version that could work on all consoles. The games we have seen raytracing in just add the effects on top of a game built for rasterizati...
This is the one I see winning actually. Not because it deserves to. It's not that great. It is the only new IP on the list though and it had the good fortune of coming out after the summer drought. I suspect that this is also why its metacritic score is so high. It is a cool idea, the gameplay is buggy and way to easy though.
Metroid was absolutely a game of the year caliber game back in 1994. What does this game do that's all that new outside of a parry mechanic that really belongs elsewhere. It's a good game, but it doesn't reinvent the wheel. I get BotW winning because at least it took the franchise in a radically new direction (who would have though a game could let you go anywhere you want. Got to give it to Nintendo. They totally didn't rip off of Skyrim and Ubisoft for that one /s).

Easily GOTY material. Miyazaki is on a whole different playing field from the rest of the industry.
Probably because everything else got delayed.
A point I was making on another thread is that even the indie devs are very risk averse. Sure there is the occasional gem like Ice Pick Lodge (who I think might actually hate money) but most indie devs are just pumping out souls clones and Metroid clones. That can’t be a good sign for things to come.
My guess is market saturation. All of these guys have to compete for attention and now they have to do it on streaming platforms that don’t produce revenue for them directly. ...
While I prefer third person perspective in video games, I do agree with you that most of them have become far too cinematic. It’s great when it is done well, but very few companies write well enough for that. It’s also the reason why everything takes forever to develop and gameplay gets sidelined for high end graphics.
Remember when indie game developers used to be unique and interesting and willing to take risks instead of just copy and pasting Dark Souls and Metroid? Pepperidge Farm remembers.

If anything, I would say Crystal Dynamics could learn a thing or two about writing compelling female protagonists.
That's good news. That means it will release before the PS6 and the XBOX 365/2 Dream Drop Distance hit the market.
I believe Projekt Red is now distinct from the Cd projekt that runs GoG though.
@darthv72 Because it was the only Xbox “in its own time”.
While technically correct, the OG Xbox was also the worst Xbox ever Created in its time. I just can’t forgive them for that.
That’s truly insane. I applaud you sir.
I used to be scenario writer just like you, until I took an arrow to the knee.
Have any of these games you list released yet? How do you if they are good or awful?
