"However, there is still a major learning curve, specially in what makes PC gaming different and special. That is the modding community, steam (as far as early access or greenlight is concerned, the horror stories I have to tell), and the fact that in the world of PC gaming is all about freedom of choice, it scares some consumers."
Unfortunately that really shows in AAA games these days that players wants easy and straightforward games. Tons of hand holding and extr...
If you would really like to push gaming industry forward you would choose open platform: PC + Vulkan.
Hmmh, well I think it is more difficult than other AAA games these days but I'm not convinced it is more difficult than many other games in the market.
Games like BG, IWD, Nethack, etc. are much difficult RPGs than Souls series at least to me. Especially if played in a "right" way - Iron Man with highest difficulty level. Souls series is very forgiving. Newer RPGs like TW, TES, DA, etc. feels more "casual" and easy (easier to sell more).
People who has played games since 80s hardly can say Bloodborne is a difficult game, but it is more difficult than other AAA games done these days.
Do you know how GOTY nominees are being chosen?
No matter how amazing strategy games are they have never change to be even nominated in GOTY awards; OOTP16, HOI4, etc. Are they too complex to be nominated for GOTY?
Great to have more baseball games.
Personally I'm much more excited about OOTP16: http://www.ootpdevelopments...
"Most in the PC world will be using DX12, unless Vulkan can some how out perform DX12 using Win7 and 8, as all the other OS combined are still considerable tiny in comparison to windows install base."
Vulkan is supported on Windows as well so Windows is part of Vulkan install base. Additionally Android will most likely support Vulkan and who knows even Apple. That said the install base will be hugely bigger than Windows/DX12.
Microsoft has huge PR r...
It is kind of funny and sad how much DirectX 12 gets so much hype and attention. Vulkan is coming and it is doing the same and more (extensible). Unfortunately no one is writing about that.
While Microsoft is working on DX12, I'm glad that Valve and others are behind Vulkan.

@draconian009: Yes the game engines are free but the development (compilers, debuggers, etc.) tools are usually not.
On Linux/SteamOS the tools are open source and free. Because they are open source you are able to port the compiler and other software to platform you prefer to use. For example I have cross-compiler on RaspberryPi 1 and I can make games with it for SteamOS.
SteamOS gives gamers full control to their PCs. For example they can tune their CPU sch...
Steam Machines are PCs. The environment is much more open than PCs running Windows; they are based on open source software, development tools are open source and free, gamers get control on their PCs, etc.
Valve is opening PC platform and that is great for gamers and developers.
Valve has been worried for a good reason. Microsoft tries to keep PC closed so what Valve is working on now is very important. Open source platform using open standards; Vulkan and others.

Playing that kind of games with gamepad is just pain. I hope it supports PS4+K/M
@DougLord: As said Youtube is great place to start.

The game is (unfortunately) very simple. They are adding content but I'm not sure if they will get the core fixed; replace randomization with simulation (would require heavy PC CPU usage).
Hopefully you will find it fun to learn by playing.
@Bigpappy: "Yeah, I know OpenGL is very popular. But what I am saying about it needing a major overhaul when compared to what DX12 is about to unleash is just what I have been reading from developers themselves (Not in comments here on N4G)."
It would be interesting to have links to those comments. I don't think there is anything catastrophically wrong with OpenGL 4.X either - just like NVIDIA says OpenGL 4.4 is superset of D3D11. OpenGL 4.5 goes further from th...
@Bigpappy: "No. OpenGL does NOT give them access to the CPU cores the way DX12 will. Someone needs to get working on a solution to get OpenGL up to speed."

@Bigpappy: "... so it would make sense for them to pay close attention to DX12 and not just roll with Mantle."
Or they could just use OpenGL which works on all systems.
That's excellent point. It's part of the fun learning by playing - unfortunately most of the games these days are so simple and straightforward that there is no much to learn. Fortunately there are exceptions like Europa Universalis, Crusader Kings, X series, etc. Hopefully No Man's Sky is complex and versatile as well.
@Losso-Oso: "I would agree with that assessment almost in its entirety, but console gamers are not the only ones that seem to want those things."
Sure, and PC gives players much more choice. They can choose more simple games or go to more complex ones if they like - I play both.
"There are games like that on both sides, there are complex, deep RPG games on both sides as well."
Hmmh, to me it looks like there is no complex ...
