We need to abandon numerical scores. Numbers lie, and who in their right mind can tell an 84 from an 85. I don't think the human brain is capable. What we really need is a skewed, symbolic curve to score games on. It's what we are doing already, anyway.
The more symbolic and less granular the rating system, the more fanboys can find common ground. The reviewer could say it's a low 4 star while the fanboy says it's a high 4 star. Either way, it's still a 4 star.

I agree with GWAVE that AG's job is to talk things up. "Best" is extremely subjective... but I would go even further beyond ratings. Metacritic is just as unreliable and subjective. A statistical sampling of subjectivity is still subjective.
