Madpuppy,
Sorry, you're wrong. The chips inside the 360 are heavily based on IBM's Power7 and the AMD x1800 series parts. But they were modified a ton. And on the last modifications, Microsoft is believed to have done the majority of the work. Some believe all of it.
Microsoft started hiring computer architects back in 2004. They now have several hundred working in a building on their campus. Read the article below.

Zech you will find that companies do things like this all the time. Wasn't it revealed recently that Sony demands the rights to some of the IPs that they sign exclusivity deals with. And other everyday companies force individual employees to sign non-compete cluses. They may not be able to work a similar job in the same city, same state or same business period for a number of years.
Lvl-up is right. MS did Bungie a huge favor. Both companies won in that deal. Bungie can...
It would be kinda of funny if the whole thing is an attempt to get Microsoft to announce the 720 first. It might work if Bungie shows next generation footage. But if it is just a trick and Bungie shows something really, really good on 720 hardware, it could backfire. Or if it's just better than what the PS4 can do, it might cause Sony to re-think their launch schedule. It's all a game of shadows.
Not necessarily true Conrholio. Like you said, it's all based on rumors and speculation. Even the chip designers don't know for sure what chips can do based on what they designed. See the Cell, Larrabee, Bulldozer core and a bunch of other CPUs. I will say I trust Microsoft on their CPU designs. RRoD aside, they are good at new designs and getting the most out of parts.
But some of the things being blamed on developers aren't their fault. It is the limitations o...
Apollo, that is not even close to the same thing. Car are sod at a huge profit. The dealer makes money on everyone sold. Designing cars has gotten cheaper and cheaper. Developing games has gotten more expensive. Plus it is easy to sell a car directly to the next owner and the seller can get a fair price. If the only option was selling to a dealer it would be more like games.
But places like Gamestop cheat the seller and next owner. There is no reason for them to pay so littl...
Bungie doesn't have a choice. Micosoft didn't let them go for free. One of the conditions was right of first refusal on future Bungie games in addition to Microsoft retaining the rights to Halo. MS might have the right to pay for exclusivity to Bungie titles, they might be able to just claim it outright or they might just automatically get timed exclusivity on them. But there is some mechanism in place where Microsoft still has some rights to Bungie's games.

Truth,
Gaikai was a standalone company that may not have been making money as it stood. I'm not sure why so many believe Sony can take on those cost and offer it for free. This has to be just another way of getting people to pay for online gaming. They could make it free to console owners and charge for anything else, but it has to be paid for. I'm not sure why Sony can make it so much more profitable than Gaikai unless they combine music and movies with it and charge...
I was writing a different reply when I remembered something. I do seem to remember Nvidia balking at the idea that their tech would be given to a third party to modify. That is one of the unfortunate results of the Cell not being what it was supposed to be and the RSX being added so late.
Nvidia is pretty bold to think their position is so strong that they can alienate all of the console makers continue to be independent. Intel might gobble them up soon. AMD is being downplay...
But that IS paying for on-line? Whether you give them additional value or not is not relevant. It helps cover the cost of providing the service. It's no different than a console bundle. Sony understands they can't keep doing on-line for free. That's why they did PSN+ in the first place. Why not just give the games away too if that was the case.
The one month outage cost Sony over 300 million to correct. Do you really think that helps Sony. If including free games ...
Read my second post above. It's stupid to get people so riled up. They stop thinking and start choosing sides. And people are usually too stupid to stop doing something stupid once they start. I do admit that we don't know this was Sony. But you did comment so you must care. And I don't hang with idiots. They're boring. Too predictable and incapable of thinking for themselves.
a-bro,
It might work out great for Sony. But they need to get deals in place with the IPs. If the IPs start charging for heavy users, Gaikai might turn into a burden for Sony.
Gaikai's importance is limited. Unless they expand the service for other places it won't be a huge factor. It has been around and hasn't made a huge impact. Though sometimes a larger company can get into areas a smaller one can't. If they did make Gaikai a streaming service that did games as well as movies and music all for one fee that might be able to make it bigger than it was. But then you might be talking about a $20-25 a month service. Make it an all encompassing PSN Plu...
It's really stupid. That kind of arrogance creates fanboys on both sides. It strengthens Microsoft. Because fanboys are as ignorant as say, republicans or democrats, they lose sight of reality. When that happens you crawl into your hole and convince yourself of the most ridiculous bs. Reality no longer matters and it becomes us versus them. So I won't buy your console and you won't buy mine.
And it also hurts both companies. Sony worse though. I really believe th...
That is interesting. Using Gaikai as PSN Plus would allow Sony to remove some of the burden of providing online for free. If they offered some free games and the ones you own that would limit the number of servers needed and still have some income coming in to cover the cost. It's could be the start of digging themselves out of the infrastructure is free mentality of their customers.
Most new games can be found on sale or with a bonus on pre-order. And there are plenty of games that people do buy day one. CoD, Halo, GTA, GT, Uncharted. Sales and used games are an excuse. People will save and buy the games they really want. It's not like the release dates are a surprise. Plus these games haven't sold over time. They've had years to buy many of them and they still haven't so price isn't the reason. A different choice is.
Sony doesn't...
Back to the old arrogant Sony. The PS4 may bring the gaming section back to consistent profitability. But besides that, their best selling product has been their assets. It would be better to get that together before they start talking trash.
There are a lot of theories out there about why Sony exclusives don't sell.
Too many exclusives.
Not a factor. People are buying games. If they don't choose yours it's because they liked someone else's more.
Advertising.
No. More than enough of the 75 million Playststion fans know the games exist.
Too much variety.
What? 75 million users. There has to be 3 or 4 million for...
I think it's kinda crazy to believe that Apple can do anything in the console industry without Steve Jobs. As much as some may believe that one man can't be that important, this might be a situation where one person was. If only from the standpoint of there being one person that had control and was trusted to make the decisions.
Corporations are kind of like countries to a degree. Many nations have faltered after losing that one leader that brought it all together. A...
Hardcore gamers only make up a small part of society. To think everyone will know about Sony's announcement is silly. Far too many Americans don't even know who the Vice-President is. People pay attention to what is important to them. Gaming is the biggest entertainment product in the world. But proximity to taste and marketing hype makes people lose sight of a particular items place in the world. Billions won't know about Sony's announcement. Or anything Microsoft announces o...
Gamestop will be crushed in the next ten years. It's business model is based on cheating people on used games and selling extended warranties. People should become comfortable with buying consoles without the warranties next generation pretty quick. The die sizes won't have the heat issues that caused the problems with this generation. And more and more of the content is being sold as DLC or as downloadable games. That will only increase.
There goes the vast majority...
