Not a bargain if you consider they could have left Blu-ray out and had a $400 console. If they had done that, this article wouldn't have been written. Sony fans can't seem to understand that business isn't magic. You do need to have sales to advertise and keep studios open.
Just add this to the growing list of things that have hurt Sony since the launch of the PS3. Sony never had the 50 billion of free cash Microsoft has. They can't afford the mistakes. Gamin...
I hope most will stay the same. I wouldn't be surprise for 'ol Bobby Kotick to try to push a hike on CoD.
I hope that it's not true about being always connected. Unless they plan to provide some kind of access, that cuts out a lot of people that either don't have or don't want Internet. Not sure who they are, but I'm sure they exist. Plus that would mean no gaming during power outages or service problems. Not acceptable.
Galactic,
I think the difference is that the information can be moved anywhere and from anywhere. And the bandwidth is dedicated to eliminate bottlenecks. I think this is what Sony was trying to do, but using traditional parts.
I'm not sure that Sony will follow a similar path, if these leaks are real. The reason being, both may be using AMD, but Microsoft does a ton of their work themselves. They started an chip unit in-house back in '04 and have d...
Actually the advertisement I remember is the Sony "It only does everything". Amazing the Sony fans saw that as a Xbox advertisement. I guess MS advertising department is so good that they got people to think Xbox on Sony ads.
I can't say I know a ton about how hardware works, but what I do know from reaing is the use of GPUs as compute units is the future. So something that makes it easy for information to be moved between the CPU, GPU and all of the memory uni...
Couldn't they be saying that this is an APU and system ready made for HSA. Made so that the cores and GPUs can move data anywhere and everywhere they need to to be as efficient as possible.
I also have to disagree with the idea that a console maker has to choose between casual and hardcore. As all devices converge, they are going to have to cater to a variety of members of a given market. I have friends that play Kinect with their kids and then shooters on-line. The whole family watches Netflix.
And the exclusives argument is maybe the dumbest argument made this generation. It neck and neck with MS is only about casual gaming. Blu-ray was a stupid decision. The...
Death part of the reason Kinect is considered a success has less to do with gaming. Microsoft has licensed the technology for many other products. TVs, including Sony TVs(eventually), are using the tech or signed deals to use it. And I'm sure you've seen all of the other devices that use it from medical to industry machinery. Kinect has brought the gesture UI to the masses. Gamers don't even use Move.
Also, Kinect was only around$56 to make. It was first sold for...
It's funny how silly ideas can grow and grow. People no longer seem to be able to put two and two together. They call Microsoft money hungry and use the money symbol instead of an S in MS. But then they believe MS will focus on low return casual games instead of the hardcore games that bring in the money. No Kinect game brings in the profits of Halo or Gears. So it's ridiculous to think MS will concentrate on Kinect.
What they will do though, is use the Xbox platform...
I think there is a very real possibility that the next consoles will be sold much like cellphones. It actually makes sense. It allows the MS and Sony to make a profit on each sold, increase their online presence and their install base much earlier than normal.
If you look at the cost of the next consoles at retail, most likely $350-400. I think that will already be at a profit. But it will also be out of the reach of a lot of people. A lot of people wait for the price to come...
So many people believe the cost of the next console will be high because of the power they should have. They also base it on the cost involve with previous consoles. Stop and think about all of the differences between the current generation and the next one.
The 360 cost Microsoft less than $200 to make now. I believe it's less than $150. It's been on sale for as low as $125. But ask yourself how the cost came down in the first place. One way, the main way, is die sh...
Raoh,
If you look into the business side of gaming you will see why Microsoft dropped the Xbox. It wasn't about not wanting to support it. It was about Nvidia and Intel making it impossible for them to continue making it. And the Irony is that both Intel and Nvidia are on the outside looking in with console gaming. Nobody wants to work with a company that will try to strangle you in the crib.
More breaking news. Microsoft has become a hardware company. It...
I think people are making a bigger deal about this than is necessary. This is just another sign that gaming in general is moving in a new direction. I believe the program will be replaced by another one that fits better with the way programming will be done on future equipment.
Looking at what Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft are doing with their new machines means the old ways are just that. Old and dying. Just think about the Cell, Larrabee and the current AMD APUs. Everything...
Bandito,
you're on N4G. Fanboy crap is always inferred. Just read the post on this page. I haven't. but I know where they're going. We all do.
The belief seems to be that Microsoft will release this Summer. But I wouldn't be surprised to see them both do it. Sony stated sometime ago that they wouldn't be the last to the market this time so they could release this Summer too.
As far as software goes. I think the Xbox will be very similar in a lot of ways to the 360. I think it will use Power7 cores, not Steamroller. But they will be modified for HSA. Or they might be using a combination of both. I believe th...
The "recession" is permanent. As long as people continue to vote the same way politicians will continue to sell us out to people looking to have more money. The housing crisis never hit Canada. The reason was their government saw what the banks were doing and stopped them. Most politicians in other countries took their campaign contributions and looked the other way. And the people re-elected them because they pretended it was all a shock to them.
It ain't the e...
People that believe exclusives have made a difference are just in denial. They clearly haven't. The PS3 would have outsold the 360 by tens of thousands of units if that was the case. I agree that exclusives will only exist for a handful of reasons. One is that the developer will be paid. The developer is a first party studio. Or the developer is targeting a very specific audience(like Japan, no need for Xbox version).
The only thing that may change that is if one console...
I think it's backed up by data because of the lack of any data to contradict it. In the US, I believe retail makes 40% of it's sales during the holiday season. But thinks like new phones and tablets aren't released during the holiday season. And they make major sales. The 360S was released right after E3 and sales rose substantially. Same for every new PS3. I believe people think you need to wait for the holiday because no one has tried anything else.
There are al...
And that's not taking into account HSA abilities of the new hardware. And tools more geared toward multi-core and HSA programming. Most people forget that multi-core was very new when the current consoles were released. And HSA was still just a goal believed to ready further down the line. Closer to 2020.
Death the difference is that Move isn't selling any games. Kinect is. Plus Kinect is creating revenue from all of the other sources I named. Move is creating little income for Sony.
