I'll jump down here first to say thanks for pointing that out before this got approved. You can get a better idea of what I was trying to get across from that part now.
Hope everyone enjoyed the review. Feel free to leave any comments or questions below. :)
Sure, the averages wouldn't be in line with the final score; but then again, I think Gameplay and Fun Factor are going to take a higher priority to his score than Graphics and Sound.
The responsibility part isn't focused on developers, Knight. I'm focusing on us, the consumer. When looking at your rationale and the myriad of other users that have brought up something similar, it strikes me as an innate fear that by stepping outside of that shield of games being about 'pure entertainment' we have to accept the responsibilities of any other legitimate medium when placing works in a greater context.
"Darker stuff isn't tackled for...
"I was also assuming that by "censorship" you were one of these people who for example see the whole gender and race debate as a giant censorship campaign, which is why I saw your leading statement as contradictory."
Oh, certainly not. I always try to use words that stay true to their definition, not the knee-jerk reactionary BS some gamers have used to corrupt its meaning. There has to be an outside force with power that can come in and actively suppres...
I suppose one reason the 'games not art' notion you stand behind doesn't fit for me just comes back to the history of growing up and seeing the idea of games being considered art as something scoffed at back in the day while still being tied with political/religious agendas, all the way back to Mortal Kombat and violence or even...Pokemon and demonology (or something far out like that). I just don't see how that's the key to make all that hubbub you're annoyed with go...
"This is sort of contradictory. If we're admitting that the artist should be allowed to do whatever they please, then surely any criticism thereafter is nullified."
Far from it, actually. A criticism has the opportunity to be presented in a structured manner as a way to inform an artist of questionable material in which it's up to him/her/them to grow from and become a more enriched artist(s). If going about attempting to actively suppress said artist'...
Well, Alan Wake had been announced as early as 2005, and post-mortem interviews always bring up their inspirations for TV shows and trying to capture that with an episodic format so you're getting the wrong idea by bringing up MS to begin with. It was originally just a concept by Remedy that MS decided to invest in after being shown to the public.
Even if we're to go by who released their game first with this TV-like storytelling format, Lost: Via Domus released mont...
I enjoy it for the class-based elements involved. Leveling up to focus more on this or that widget to benefit the team in a different way.
Interesting for you to bring up this review now since I'm going back and forth as to whether or not I should try this. It seems like a good game, but then the Wii doesn't get much playtime. I'll have to make some time for this one down the road.
Thanks for the review.
I'll take your word for it simply b/c I didn't bother to dive into many reviews since most said "just get it." Went ahead and took that advice quickly since first week deal was $2 off. Maybe I can see what others had to say about it now.
"I'm just saying that they seem more impressed by the story than the game design which contributed to that non-linearity."
That's kinda/sorta surprising to me. I can respect certain aspe...
"It is already obvious what is N4G's GOTY :P"
I don't know...one poster was confident enough to promise everyone a coke if TLOU didn't get GOTY. Maybe everyone settles for Ni No Kuni or GTAV to see if that happens. ;)
Congrats, -Alpha.
That's correct.
I like what you're saying regarding progressive game design, and the comment in general, but I get a bit lost on the few parts like "Games can be different things and don't need to rely on some heartstring-pulling, super personal narrative to be progressive and innovative" because the few critics I've seen/heard talk about it aren't really focused on demanding the 'heartstring-pulling stuff' but rather that avant-garde gameplay template that's able to fee...
*That second question, I mean
Others have touched upon stuff here, but I might as well chime in:
That first question is not the right one to ask. Taking away a rather honorable term, the way I see it, like 'art' to describe any video games wouldn't make this minority of rabid SJWs that'll insult any developer on site for not pandering to them just wander off and be contented with every videogame they play that could have questionable material present. Even without that term, it's sti...
@Mr_Winter85
Thanks for pointing that problem out by the way. From what limited time I had with KZ3 (in demo), it really did feel...kind of wrong from KZ2 in how the gameplay felt. Instead of that laborious feeling to aiming and moving, everything in 3 felt so instant. I still want to give that and Shadowfall a fair chance by playing the full version though.
So yes, it would definitely be hypocrisy of a reviewer to mix up "tired" and "famili...
Hmmm...okay.
In that case, replace Wolf Among Us with Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon.
@Mr_Writer85
Oh...I missed the "tired for having a similar feel to earlier games" part of Killzone and thought it meant similar to COD, which is what I've seen a lot on here blame KZ3 of doing. That's where the "when a different series uses that template for its OWN game, without providing enough of something new or appreciated, it's kind of like a lesser-creative developer leeching off of someone else's success" comes from in my reply. <...
Given the price point it's at now, I can say you won't be totally disappointed. I try to measure a game at what the developer/publisher decided it was worth upon launching (premium-priced title). And with that considered, it's a decent game overall.
The averages show I was being hard on it but it just so encapsulates what's getting annoying about the industry:
EA lead #1 in board meeting: "Let's resurrect a long-dormant franchise an...
