Agree with you, many contradictory things in that review, along with a strange obsession on things that aren't supposed to be priorities in a game like this.
I really enjoy the Uncharted games but I think if people weren't so protective of them (because they are exclusives, presumably) they'd be more open to admitting the similarities. Uncharted does indeed seem to get a free pass with regards to staying the same with only minor improvements each entry.
Take heart, most of the reviews, even the bad ones, say the gameplay is actually pretty good, especially the puzzles. They also praise the exploration and visuals.
The main complaint seems to be the story and 'problematic' political themes.
Politics was dragged into things again. One review said 'culturally tone deaf', one said that the non-white characters didn't have enough say in Lara's actions and another said colonialist Lara was 'problematic', etc.
I read about 5+ of the lower scored reviews and the main problem they had with the game was the story and Lara's character arc. They pretty much said, "Very good/great gameplay, great visuals, great exploration, great puzzles ...

I see nothing about their complaints that disturbs me. However, unlike most people it seems, I had a huge problem with the combat in RDR. In fact, it's only with GTAV that I found combat 'fairly enjoyable' in RS games. The thing is, with GTA's modern setting there's a lot more to mess around with so it doesn't notice so much. In RDR the only action relates to gunplay and I found that pretty poor. I had a hard time finishing it. Lower budget games like Spec Ops th...
Just in case you never played W3, I thought I'd mention that CDPR had a whole host of options for turning off screen info. I expect the same here since, like you, I didn't like the numbers.
That's actually a pretty funny observation mixelon.
"So what's the worst gaming invention ever? Loot boxes? Overpriced DLC? Always online single player? Games you can't trade in?"
"Nah, it's that damned 1st person perspective!"
As for being a gamer since the late 70's, that shouldn't mean anything with regards to FPP, imho. I started playing Atari in '81 and my first pc was, like ...
Exactly. I wrote a similar thing here and on the CDPR forums. I think people are arguing over a word which seems to have different meanings to them.
Some people seem to be interpreting immersive as meaning 'more enjoyable according to my tastes', 'spectacular', 'breathtaking' or, as you just so nicely summed it up, engaging. I think most of us here though agree that it means, in a gaming context, feeling that you're actually in the game, as mu...
It's interesting to read people using the word immersion and seemingly having different interpretations of it.
When I look at the vistas on offer when playing Witcher 3 or Horizon Dawn I see these gorgeous landscapes with beautiful lighting and I can't help but sit and marvel at them, really 'drink' them in, so to speak. It's almost hypnotic. However, it's not what I call immersive in the truest sense based on my definition though. Atmospheric? Y...
I disagree strongly.
I'm sad to hear many don't like it but they've created all the combat around FPP. The delay for 3rdPP would be huge. Add it at a later date if they really have to, along with multi-player.
It's also very strange to see such a request, since most players ask for many things during a games development but a change/addition of a perspective is rarely, if ever, mentioned. No one asked for it Deus Ex (2000) or the rece...
No Geralt?!
For whatever it's worth, I thought the same thing. It's definitely interesting to note the similarities. Not sure why you have so many downvotes.
Both games shouldered the huge burden of being technical showpieces early on in their respective console cycles. People had huge expectations for them but both games were on the short side with game mechanics that, while solid and enjoyable, people had seen many times before.
However, like you said, ...
Yeah, I think this game got treated unfairly. I'm guessing because it was an early PS4 showpiece and there was so much hype surrounding it.
I too played it long after release and found it an enjoyable experience within a beautifully rendered world. It could have done with less QTE's, a bit more enemy and weapon variety, more combat mechanics/situations and been longer with a bit more story continuation. However, what was there was good and I definitely finished t...
Heh, the subjectivity of games never ceases to surprise. So many people here talking as if certain aspects of one game being better than another are objective fact. I remember being blown away by Shadow of the Colossus and excitedly lending it to a friend, who largely loved the same kind of games I did, only to have him return it to me saying it was weird and boring. Was he wrong? Of course not, if he found it boring then that was his experience of it. End of story.
Wh...
Such a great site. I relieved so many great gaming memories thanks to them. It was also a straight forward site to download from, very little BS. Some sites had adware and such packed into their roms or they would have long waits, multiple links to click on and ads springing up all the time.
One of the few sites I've ever donated to. I wish them luck moving forward.
I agree, thanks for making this point.
In their need to vent their frustration at politics, people went nuts acting like this game was actually an important statement on the U.S government and neo-nazism in general. Several reviewers said 'This game represents an important moment in gaming history'. How crazy is that?
I remember one reviewer was fanatical, and demented, enough to finish his review saying, 'If you're not a total piece of ...
The title of the article should be 'Is VR slowly coming alive?'.
VR can't be dying when it hasn't even lived yet. It's a slow growing market, not a slow dying one. It's too expensive and hasn't had enough AAA support at the moment, that's all. With time though, these things will sort themselves out. It's an experience like no other so it'll only get stronger with time. Even other things people point to as criticisms will change t...
To be fair, I think you're missing the point about Smash. It's a multiplayer fighter with a competitive scene. The subtle differences and balance changes play out in a hugely different manner for the core audience, regardless of the core game being the same. You just don't go making changes in the same way they did with the single-player GoW.
You might as well be asking Capcom to turn Street Fighter into Power Stone because the whole '2d side view thing i...
Well, I can only speak for myself but I've been playing games for over 35 years and W3 certainly blew me away. It's in my top 3 GamesOAT.
Luckily for me, and many others I suspect, most of the really low scoring reviews said that gameplay is good/great but that the main problems are the story and Lara's imperialist ways/selfishness. Others say one of the problems is that it's 'more of the same', which is great considering how much I liked the last two.
Honestly, I really don't care that much about the story, nor do I care if Lara is 'culturally tone deaf', heh.
