Well, I didn't mention any actual numbers but I do know that Sony's own replication facility is getting about 80% yield on single layer and slightly less on dual layer disks. You can bet that the other replicating companies are not doing as well as Sony themselves. You can also bet Sony's facility is state of the art. Even so, 80% is a far cry from the rest of the industry at 95% or better averages, including HD-DVD.
So 2 years ago they showed the 8 layer 200Gb prototype and yet, 2 years later, the 4 layer version is STILL a prototype? What happened? You would think that a 4 layer disk would be even easier to get working than an eight layer disc yet here we are, 2 years after the 8 layer prototype was shown and the 4 layer disc... is still a prototype.
Please.
This is under the 'industry' tab not one of the gaming tabs and since both the 360 and obviously the ps3 are linked to the format war, then it is appropriate to post these articles under industry category.
Besides, some of us love the home theatre stuff and enjoy reading and commenting about the developments of the format war. Maybe there should be a 'home theatre' tab now that the ps3 and 360 are using high def screens, playing hidef movies and using advanced audio codecs... ...
Nasim, atleast you are supplying links now but did you even look at the link you supplied? Tell you what, go to all those sales rankings and click 'show all' instead of 'last 24 hours' and you will see that Blu-Ray only leads by about 20-25%.
And based on Sony's own sales data from their recent keynote, an interesting trend is happening, See attached
Well, Lair was talked up an aweful lot by Sony and it's extreme fans so it was drawing a lot of attention when all the bad reviews were rolling in... Two Worlds was interesting in the sense that is was similar to Oblivion but no one really expected tons out of it...
agreed.
You're 100% right Lightning, it doesn't matter. In the end this will be nothing more than a bullet on a HD-DVD presentation somewhere.
It is true that the 51Gb disc is not supported by present players which also leads me to believe it will never be used especially since the 3 layer 45Gb discs are supported by present players. Besides, I can't think of any movies that won't fit on the 4+ hours available with the 30Gb disc... maybe the super duper platinum hardcore-extended l...
1. Prototype. There are big differences between the lab world and the real world.
2. 2 layer BDs are still having yield issues well over a year after launch, wonder how good yields will be with a 4 layer disk?
3. 30Gb holds over 4 hours of 1080p24 video. What do you need the space for?
4. I just bought a terrabyte backup drive for $200. A Blu-ray burner is $750 plus $15 per single layered blank. It would cost me over $1300 to burn the contents of my $200 backup dr...
Looks great, definitely a title I am keeping my eye on.
Stella, my decision to support HD-DVD was not affected by the consoles in the least and I find it insulting that you paint every HD-DVD supporter as an 'xbot'.
I own both a stand-alone Blu-ray player and stand-alone HD-DVD player but buy the HD-DVD format whenever it is available because I believe it is the superior format.
btw, I also run a custom home theatre installation business and I am ISF certified (display calibration) and HAA certified (acoustic calibr...
"The newly standardized Chinese HD format is called "CH DVD", and is compatible with HD DVD."
My understanding of that statement is that CH-DVD players will play HD-DVD discs but not the other way around which makes sense if the CH-DVD are essentially the same except with extra copy protection built in.
The biggest implication however is that many chinese dvd plyers are rebranded and sold by many big name manufacturers. It only stands to reas...
nasim, why do you behave like this? Do you have a reliable link to back up your claim that blu-ray players are going to drop 80% in price over the next year?
According to the article, the CH-DVD players play HD-DVD discs but HD-DVD players will not play the CH-DVD discs. In other words, China has officially adopted HD-DVD as the standard as far as the rest of the world is concerned.
This is another massive body blow to the bd consortium... ouch!
You keep spouting off that the 360 is the lowest selling console in EU (Everytime you use that single bubble of yours) but I can only find information that completely contradicts that. If you can't provide a reliable link to support that then please stop spamming N4G.
I own a 360 and I had an xbox and guess what? I love jrpg's. I bought and love Blue Dragon. I think that if FF was announced multiplat that it would be a huge shift in perception of the 360 by the japanese.
Hope this helps!
*sigh*
I think I would feel insulted if I was a reviewer and a dev/platform holder sent me a booklet to show me how to do my job. Anybody think Ebert gets booklets on how to enjoy movies that he rated poorly?
Actually, his comment was really quite reasonable. You should actually read people's comments before you make retarded comments like this, even fanboys occasionally say something worth reading.
Agree, mostly bullshot but there are two screens in there that looked like it could be 'in game engine'... the others are cut scene/photo mode material I would guess...
Hmmm... good point SJL.
