I'd definitely say that Blu-ray has overall affected the ps3 negatively so far and that the ps3 has definitely affected Blu-ray positively. No one can deny that the extra cost of the console is a factor in people's decision on which console to buy.
The other factor which many above me are throwing out there is the 1 year delayed launch but ask yourselves why the ps3 was delayed. Yup, to include Blu-ray. Sony originally set a launch date of May 06 in order to incorporate Bl...
Blu-Ray has many more titles in it's inventory than that. I may think that HD-DVD is the better format and state my opinion accordingly but I still firmly believe that dual-format players will become the standard. Both sides are too well entrenched for any other outcome.
I agree, if they wanted it to truly be a trojan, then it would be at the price of DVD. They wouldn't even need to do it with every release, just the high profile ones. The pricing does suggest that it isn't really targeted as 'trojan'. The ability to play the movie on regular dvd players is a nice option but not really worth the extra cost imo.
One point not mentioned in the article is that it takes a little fear out of the purchase in the sense that if HD-DVD fails the fo...
And that's why it is posted in the tech section. I do believe that the industry section is probably a more appropriate place though since the formats do have heavy tie-ins with the 360 and especially the PS3.
The combo discs have had some issues but they aren't as widespread as the authour implies them to be. Some Blu-ray discs have had disc-rot issues but similarly, it is not widespread and has also had little effect on the format in general. In both cases, I believe that as long as the publisher is willing to replace the disc with a new copy then it is really not a significant issue and in both cases, that is exactly what is happening.
I seriously disagree waffles. You are talking about someone's livelyhood here. The fact that she is making a small wage means that she likely hasn't got money put aside for unforseens. Have you considered that she may also have dependents? Should this employee suffer for what amounts to entrapment!?
A person is 'entrapped' when they are induced or persuaded to commit a crime that they had no previous intent to commit which is clearly the case here. The clerk, I am sure, ha...
Firing the clerk is certainly not going to teach anyone anything. The clerk should be coached. The behaviour should be pointed out, the rational for the correct behaviour should be delivered and the correct behaviour should be practiced and reinforced.
The retailer should issue a public statement apologizing for the error and outline the steps they plan to take to try to correct the issue such as staff training and extra signage to try and educate the public about the ratings...
Interesting... Did I mention that I work in the home theatre business world and that I have certification to calibrate both audio and video equipment?
$1500? Hmmm... that's almost as much as my center. $3000? Yeah, you could buy ONE of my towers for that. Truth is, >just< the speakers and 2 subwoofers in my 7.1 home theatre cost me around $13k and that's dealer cost.
I own both a stand-alone HD-DVD player and stand-alone Blu-Ray player and they are amo...
Really? Because I have a Custom Home Theatre installation business and I am ISF and HAA certified (video and audio calibration) and I believe that HD-DVD is the superior product for delivering movies.
Lord Thunderin' Jesus! Are you still going on about this? See comment 7.2
Edit: and 7.4
Double edit: Holy cow Rageanitus, what is with you? I just noticed this comment:
"the uncompressed sound is by far much better than dts hd and dolby digital true hd."
You do realize that DTS HD (Master Audio) and Dolby Digital True HD are both lossless codecs right? That means they are bit-for-bit identical to the original master! Man, the more you talk, ...
WHA?! The majority of people cannot tell the difference between cd audio and DVD audio. You would need a properly tuned sound environment and a VERY good ear to tell the difference between DVD audio and either HD or BD audio.
Even if you had access to an anechoic chamber with the most advanced speakers/receivers/cabling that were all perfectly tuned and had specialized listening training, I still would have extreme levels of doubt concerning whether any human being on earth, ...
Terrible and sad news.
I have to say that there is a chunk of the gaming community that needs to think about this. How many people out there had a hacked xbox and just downloaded games? Maybe if this studio had better sales they could have afforded to keep their team on the leading edge or could have pushed out more polished titles and ultimately still be bringing us games.
This is a very real side effect of the 'hacking' culture.
Not saying that he hasn't spun stuff in the past since I really don't track others statements and the title isn't wrong, just misleading, but according to the official statement made by New Line he is pretty much 100% correct. How exactly is that considered 'spin'?

You know Stella, it's statements like this that really undermine your credibility. It shows a real lack of understanding at even the most rudimentary levels concerning this market.
Not only that but this lack of credibility carries over into all your comments. I ask myself, if you can't grasp even the simplest basics of this market, how can I possibly assign any weight to what you say about any market? Do you see?
You have an opinion? Great! Let's hear it but...
Actually, they are talking specifically about 'Hairspray'. If they publish another title that is a second party aquisition this year then it will be day and date with the DVD and Blu-ray release. 'Hairspray' is delayed because HD-DVD is region free. I suspect the movie is still in theatres in some parts of the world and that would undercut those markets.
Yeah, the title is misleading. Less than 20 minutes later the official announcement came and was posted on the site. It's a little clearer:

Where the heck did you get the ridiculous idea that Sony has tons of money?!?!
Sony has over $11 billion of debt
http://arstechnica.com/news...
They have been forced to sell equity in their insurance business to raise $3 billion to support their games division
Ummm... the 360 had one price cut and that was after the ps3 cut it's price... am I missing something?
