the A1 was 1st gen, the A2 is second gen and the A3 is the newest 3rd gen entry level player. The third gen players only arrived this fall. It's not very hard to understand.
William makes a good point, if you are looking seriously at a $200 hd player then you probably also have a set which only supports up to 1080i and sound which is 5.1 which makes this player a good match.
I might ask why gaming needs 50 gb discs when one of the best games on the ps3 is only 800 mb...
TDK and Panasonic have been making breakthroughs on bd recordable disc printing not bd-rom printing.
Keep in mind that $0.50 vs $1.50 means one dollar of lost profits per disc. For examble, Halo 3 sold about 3.3 Million discs in it's first week. That would have been $3.3 Million dollars of profit lost due to manufacturing cost if it was on ps3. That is VERY significant for a console that has a smaller install base and longer (more expensive) development time.

You don't see any raving reviews of Mobile Suit Gundam: Crossfire because it's a horrible game. Simalarly, you won't see any articles offering positives on the lack of BC because it is a negative to begin with. Who in their right mind would praise Sony for removing BC?

The problem with relying on consoles (as Blu-ray firmly does) is that a massive portion of the demographic is 18-30 year old males.
While this demographic will be wild about movies like 300, they will be largely indifferent to movies like Citizen Cane or Casablanca (for example). You end up with a very lopsided market where some movies are very popular and others barely sell at all.
