The 3 layer 45 gig disc was finalized some time ago. The 1st gen players were not built to properly read the 3rd layer but it has never been stated whether 2nd or 3rd gen players are capable(they were designed and built after the 3 layer 45 gb standard was approved).

Edit: found the link with Jim Armour where he discusses the 3 layer 45gb being read on hardware. "Jim Armour, Toshiba: Yeah, I think second or third generation hardware - fine, but not first-generation pro...

Well, the Nielson numbers are pretty indicative however I would say that the weekly sales don't say very much at all about the sales in general as shown below in the list showing the weekly sales and year to date sales ratios side by side. Pretty interesting data I would say.

See Below:

Day . . Week . . YTD
04/15 . 61/39 . 69/31
04/22 . 52/48 . 68/32
04/29 . 71/29 . 68/32
05/06 . 60/40 . 68/32
05/13 . 62/38 . 68/32

It's just two sides of the same coin. The BDA talks up disc sales but goes mum when you talk attach rate and the HD DVD Consortium talks up attach rate but goes mum when you talk install base.

The REALITY is that the attach rate for HD DVD players and gamers that are actively using their PS3 as a blu-ray player are relatively close to each other. The HD DVD Consortium doesn't want to admit that a percentage of PS3 owners actively buy discs and the BDA doesn't want to admit th...

I highly doubt that a lawsuit would be successful in court. The way that people are today... well, let's just say I wouldn't be really surprised if people tried.

The real issue is that profile 1.1(bonusview) and 2.0(bd-live) are potential pr nightmares. There's a reason nothing profile 1.1 related is being released until after christmas...

The Smarthouse summation is total crap. Go to Stephen Dawson's site for an excellent read! Only thing extra I would have added is a discussion on cabling which he flew past. Great read though!

Edit: The issue in cabling is that the minimum required standard for HDMI can result in lost data transmitted especially in long cable runs at the full bandwi...

Actually, both formats have about the same number of titles released so far. 343 bd vs 330 hd

As far as studio support, go ahead and take a look at the major studio catalogues for yourself:

Universal is massive (a bit over 7500 catalogue titles):

Here you go:

1.85:1 sales

Wal-Mart sells 40,000-70,000 $99 players ($99 was a 4 hour sale at Wal-Mart)

The fact that blu-ray sales only exceed HD DVD sales by 1.85:1 despite a massive ps3 install base relative to HD DVD players clearly illustrates that they are buying discs and the fact that a $99 sale by Walmart can increase the HD DVD install base by 10% in ONE DAY should make blu-ray fans VERY nervous.

Because Universal is massive (a bit over 7500 catalogue titles):
http://www.imdb.com/M/list?...

And Paramount/Dreamworks ain't too shabby either (a bit over 3700 catalogue titles):

Because DVD is a 720x480 interlaced source at 29.97 frames per second.

You're new to home theatre aren't you?

Look, check comment 22.5 before you make another comment that makes you look silly.

I own a stand-alone Samsung blu-ray player and 9 bd's
I also own a standalone Toshiba HD DVD player and 64 hd's
I also own a standalone panasonic DVD player and 764 dvd's

I think the point he is trying to make is that many blu-ray supporters are supporters because it is built into the console they own, not neccessarily because they chose blu-ray on its own merits.

HD DVD and blu-ray both have 1080p24 on disc. Film is 24 frames per second. 1080i60 and 1080p60 will both produce a visually identical picture on a set capable of displaying a 1080 picture.

I repeat: Film is 24 frames per second. A 24 frame per second progressive source transmitted as a 60 frame per second interlaced transmission will display pixel for pixel identically to the same source transmitted as a 60 frame per second progressive transmission.

This dis...

Those are US sales of HD DVD players not worldwide.

Edit: the point I was making is that you are comparing worldwide sales of the ps3 to US only sales of HD DVD players. However, if you want to say the install base is 10:1 then that's fine... BUT you better worry about even the slightest increase in HD DVD install base since your 10:1 install base is only producing a 1.85:1 sales advantage on titles.

You sure you don't want to compare US sales to US sales?

I don't think the HD-DVD group has EVER said that no one uses the ps3 as a blu-ray player. What they have said is only a fraction of owners use it and that cinemaphiles prefer to own and use a standalone player.

There is no doubt in anybody's mind that the ps3 is a valuable asset to the bda but even current title sales show that a stand-alone owner will (generally) buy MANY more titles than a console owner as is so clearly illustrated by the 1.85:1 sales of bluray:HD DVD title...

From the actual news post that you didn't read:

"People, come on now, AVS Forum has been on the net long before digital projectors. When DVD's were still a new thing. To think we are paid off or bought out by one side or another is just, well, silly not to mention FALSE. If we were to do that, well, the site would not be like it is today."
