I am tired of this silliness. The 115k number is the number that Neilson videoscan counted and >they don't count sales from walmart<

64% of what? How many copies of 300 sold on DVD compared to hd-dvd and blu-ray combined? What is it, 30 to 1 for dvd vs combined hd media sales?

You're thinking of Paramount/Dreamworks not Universal.

Well 10-15% of ps3's is still 600k-800k active blu-ray users which is significant. Although I think he is making a valid point, what he is leaving out is that those users are a very specific demographic. The majority of them are males, 18-35 years old and this reflects strongly in the titles offered on blu-ray. Sure, 300 sold great on blu-ray but what about classic titles? They practically don't exist!

Sure they have some older titles, Battle of the Buldge, Blazing Saddles, ...

That's true but you also have to frame that statement.
Total sales Worldwide ps3 = 135,890
Just North American Sales 360 = 139,150

Hopefully the ps3 sales will surge with Uncharted...

3 price cuts in short succession? I think that's a little aggressive thinking. I'd rather Sony invested in more games than cut their console prices so soon.

I have to agree with testo about tactics these groups will employ. This is business and it is cut throat. HD-DVD consortium or Blu-Ray Disc Association, they will both do whatever they can to succeed. It's about profits not ethics or morality and don't let any marketeering make you believe otherwise.

Like puppets on a string. How depressingly predictable.

When a story is even remotely HD-DVD positive or blu-ray negative, dozens of morons whine that the format war doesn't belong on this site, not even in the industry or tech section but look what's in the ps3 section? Where's the gaming news here?

Don't get me wrong, I think that these articles should be posted because they are heavily tied into the games industry and I believe that HD-DVD is the superior format but dual format players will reign supreme. I just can't stand the...

The resolution of our eyes is 12 vertical lines per arc angle (one line per arcminute for 20/20 acuity) times 2. Our minimum resolvable element size at 8 feet distance is about 0.065", or about twice the size of the pixels of a 50" 1080 image from 8 feet away! Put bluntly, from 8 feet away while watching a 50 inch plasma TV, the human eye is generally incapable of reliably distinguishing any detail finer than that shown on a true 720p display.

Armyless, I am curious why you think that projectors should not have been used? I'm not being combative, I'm just interested in your opinion.

As some added commentary to the article, I used to own the Marantz VP12-S4 and now own the Optoma HD81 and I can tell you that the quality of the optics on the Marantz went a long way towards compensating for the lower resolution. I'm throwing a 120" screen and viewing from 13' away so I'm fairly close and when I focused I could ma...

You know, I expect regular gamers not to neccessarily understand the intricacies of HD transmission but the people at cnet should be embarrassed and ashamed.

The HQV HD Video Resolution Loss Test is meant to test the ability of de-interlacers. A 60 frame per second source is transmitted as an interlaced signal, 2,4,6,...,60 frames are a white lines box, 1,3,5,...,59 frames are a black line box and there is a rotating white line. If the set displays a strobe effect then the de...

The ps3 is a blu-ray player and the 360 has an HD-DVD add-on. Like it or not, the hd formats are strongly tied into the gaming industry.

No, it was 1700 locations:
http://blockbuster.mediaroo...

Now, the reality is that Blockbuster didn't actually announce exclusive support nor did they endorse blu-ray, they only announced that starting July they would start carrying blu-ray titles for rental and purchase in 1700 locations and this is made very clear in this interview with Nick Shepherd, COO of Blockbust...

This is a celebrity trash magazine!

Sources such as 'two blu-ray studio insiders'?! Un-named insiders no less!! That's reliable.

And blockbuster DOES stock hd-dvd, thank you. Only 1700 of Blockbuster's 5500+ stores stock blu-ray exclusively for rental but they still SELL hd-dvds. The other 4300+ locations have not pledged any exclusivity at all including my local blockbuster which DOES rent HD-DVD. Also they sell HD-DVD online and rent through there online re...

If a Toshiba player is $200, how much will the venturer unit cost? $150?

6659d ago 1 agree0 disagreeView comment

It's cheaper because it's simpler to build. Larger data tracks mean less expensive optics and simpler tracking servos, constant angular rotation means simpler and smaller drive motors and consistent data depth with DVD means mechanical transparency for backward compatibility.

The inherently simpler mechanical design philosophy for HD-DVD should also directly correspond with long term mechanical reliability. Simpler mechanicals should also result in a less costly warranty prog...

Once again, the $5 billion MGM/Columbia/Tristar acquisition by Sony far outweighs any $150M timed exclusive deal.

I think he is speaking of Sony's acquisition of MGM/Columbia/Tristar which effectively locks the studios into the blu-ray camp... Mind you, with the phrase 'conscientious consumer of technology' perhaps he is speaking of the trojan bundling of Blu-ray in the PS3.
