I think we are talking about a medium for delivering film. If HD DVD didn't accomplish that at the same quality level then I'd say you have something.

This article is horribly full of inacuracies.

He points out Toshiba lowering sales estimates but fails to mention the ps3 hasn't exactly performed as promised either.

He goes on about how Blu-ray has so many more titles but as of this weeks release schedule, its 338 titles to 365 titles. 27 titles is hardly 'a lot more'! It's not even a 10% lead!

Then he goes on to say that HD DVD has 15gb and Blu-ray has 25gb ON EACH SIDE to make 30 and 50 GB! ...

The VC1 CODEC and HDi O/S provides licencing revenue for Microsoft. Had the BDA adopted HDi and VC1 from the get-go Microsoft would likely be neutral today. (The BDA chose java over HDi and only adopted VC1 at the last moments before the profile 1.0 approval stage)

I don't own the add-on myself but I believe the 360 is much quieter when playing HD DVDs... not as much cooling required when the GPU is not in use...

The internet hasn't prevented people from buying adult films on DVD. Also, HD DVD has a lot of new special features that the adult industry could take advantage of in very creative ways adding 'value' to their releases.

The big difference between HD DVD/Blu-ray and Beta/VHS is that there wasn't any players that played both beta and vhs. We already have players from LG and Samsung which are dual format. This format war will be meaningless as soon as these types of players are affordable.

Maybe I should stop watching special features now that I know that you and a couple friends don't watch them.

Hey while I'm at it, maybe I'll stop finishing games because I know some people that didn't finish some games.

Geez, I also know someone that didn't finish his degree... man, I wasted all those years getting my degree. I'm such a chump.

Meus and Family:
I think you guys need to rethink your stance. Both HD DVD and Blu-ray have mandatory support of Dolby Digital, DTS, and Linear PCM but only HD DVD has mandatory support for the newer Dolby Digital Plus (DD+) and Dolby TrueHD (Lossless) whereas these are optional on Blu-Ray.

Why are all people who support HD DVD 'Xbots'? Are playstation owners not allowed to choose HD DVD? How about someone like FuRy? He owns an Xbox and he owns a Blu-ray player. Does that make him an 'xbot' or a 'droid'?

What about me? I own both a stand alone HD DVD player, a standalone Blu-ray player and a 360. I don't have a PS3 yet because I already own a Blu-ray player so it doesn't have as much value to me. I plan to buy one in the future when prices drop lower though...

Nice thought out comment FuRy.

Shouldn't there be a link to the source article?

No worries FuRy. I believe there isn't a wrong format choice, I think that dual format players will become cheap long before the format war will end and will mimic the DVD+R/DVD-R war.

I do think that overall, HD DVD is the better solution though.

I'm not sure what your point is regarding DivX? I'm pretty sure that there aren't any studios on any high def or standard def formats that support DivX. The only thing that DivX seems to accomplish is encourage piracy so I really don't see how that is an advantage of any sort in the format war... I'd go so far as to say that DivX support is viewed as a negative by studios.

I think maybe you don't understand what a CODEC is? CODEC is an abbreviation for COmpressor DECompresso...

256mb of local memory and a secondary video decoder is required. This is hardware that doesn't exist on any profile 1.0 players approved before Oct 30th. A firmware update cannot create 256mb of memory and a second video decoder.

6639d ago 1 agree0 disagreeView comment

It's a special feature option. If you never listened to director commentaries or watched storyboards from DVD special features then you probably won't watch the pip features but there are many people that are very interested in these features.

A profile 1.1 player needs to have 256mb of local memory to store bd-java on and a secondary video decoder so profile 1.0 players can't be updated to profile 1.1. Unfortunately, Blu-ray is not finalized until profile 2.0, which requires 1 gb of local memory and an ethernet port so no profile 1.0 or profile 1.1 players (presently available or in the near future) will be able to update to profile 2.0.

The ps3 has more than 1 gb of local memory and a network connection so it will...

I respect your opinion since you have made it based on what you believe the merits are however, I would argue that you are misinformed in your assumption that blu-ray's extra space is a particularly strong advantage for movie playback.

The HD DVD consortium knew from very early on that in order to leverage the installed infrastructure of DVD (a massive advantage), they would have to work with a smaller disc space and they made their decisions based on that.

They ...
