Actually it was way before the 16 bit era, its been around since day 1.
Commodore 64 vs ZX spectrum vs Amstrad CPC wars were all the rage when I was in the school playground, before that was Dragon vs Oreck 1, Vic 20 vs 16k Spectrum (and many others too).

I would have gone for the argument that coding for the destruction of the object after a failed enchantment attempt without providing an adequate form of insurance policy was a means of manipulating the market in an unfair and improper manner.

The thing is, some of us go back to the days when every game sold was flawed. In the days of C64, ZX Spectrum etc the flaws often made the gameplay.
Every single game was broken in some major way (Jet Set Willie was unfinishable due to a bug in the software). With my C64, I often spent an entire afternoon just trying to load some flawed crappy game, moving the cassette player several times and propping it up at all angles in the process.

The review and score are justified. The reviewer is intelligent and articulate and able to communicate his point very well, it's bound to be contrary to the majority of posters on n4g for that very reason.
