Of course we could also say that it is an attempt by the EU to make the competitive environment a little fairer. Whilst MS has been allowed to overprice its products it has spent those revenues on bribes, anti competitive practices and attempting to influence things like the recent ISO open document standard votes.
Microsoft have siomply been asked to allow other companies to integrate with their software, so that they can perhaps come up with alternatives to Outlook, or other ...
From a movie enthusiasts point of view there is no reason to support HD DVD
1. It has less space than Blu Ray
2. This less space means top movies like Transformers are supplied without HD sound
3. The menus and interactivity is just software. Anything HD DVD can do so can Blu Ray
The main thing is it is all about space. More space means higher resolutions, higher audio quality, more features on the disc.
From a marketing point of view...
They would all fall off, or break on the first attack, the 'Rusty Ratchet of Doom' would cause a massive failure in the Xbox Hive Mind and they would all run away screaming 'memory dump, memory dump, memory dump!'
In the UK the Gold subscription is £40 ($80) which I think is OK if I played online enough. Unfortunately I don't as there just hasn't been a game to make me want to go online again. I used to play a lot of MotoGP2 on the Xbox and played PGR3 on the 360 but it wasn't the same somehow. I don't like the points system it is crap. Everything is priced in such a way as to ensure you have 100 points or so left which is no use for anything apart from 'gamerpics' which is just such a ripoff. How...
I played the demo of PES on the 360 and didn't think much to it to be honest, and the fact that it didn't have a commentary really let the experience down.
Playing the Fifa 2008 demo on the PS3 was completely different, and great fun. I didn't really notice any difference in speed or anything.
Still confused, although a mate has bought Fifi 08 for his PS3 so I may get PES so we can compare with the full games rather than the demo (when PES comes out in the UK tha...
Would have been useful to see the article compare the functionality, but instead it is the usual fluff about sales and marketing. Doesn't anyone talk about what these things actually do anymore, or are we so interested in the sales performance that we should just buy the stocks and not bother with the device ?
I don't think you are comparing like with like really. The PS3 and the 360 have had completely different competitive environments during their respective first years on the market.
1. The 360 was launched in more countries simultaneously
2. Microsoft dropped the Xbox like a brick and no significant releases came out for the Xbox in the 360's first year.
3. The 360 was the only 'next gen' machine on the market
4. Sony delayed the launch in Europe for 5 month...
Most of what you quote doesn't mention MS at all, and that is just the usual PR stuff. We could easily compare similar press 'quotes' all day, which are usually taken out of context by the media in order to create more pageviews.
This is an official press release, not a slip of the tongue, or a comment taken out of context. I am surprised you do not see the difference.
If the PS3 does eventually overtake Microsoft and then start issuing press release which are ba...
It seems Microsoft still need to bash the other side in order to promote their own console. I read Sony's response too which is all about Sony, as you would expect (add up all of Sony's console sales and it is about the same as Microsofts 'only' console). Microsoft's response is just a whole bunch of insults and for a consumer who has both consoles, that is not the way to make the 360 my preferred console when buying multi platform games.
I personally detest this type of market...
Lots of 'Artificial' but very little 'Intelligence' :o)
Its still a good game though. Will tackle Legendary after I finish R:FOM
watching our wives play games is just one of the things which will increase the rate of divorce. It is worse than trying to teach them to drive. And if they are playing games how can they fetch us food and drink on a regular basis? ;o)
To support both formats means either buying a 'cheap' standalone HDDVD player, or buying that ugly cheap looking add on for the 360 which connects via USB and does not play through HDMI (and therefore will not output HDMI 1.3), does not support True HD audio, and requires two power sockets and two powerblocks (360 and Addon).
By buying a PS3 I know that Blu Ray is not a wasted purchase, as whatever happens to the movie market, Blu Ray will be used for games (look at Nintendos u...
So the cell chip is good for computing and for processing video images? Hmm, I wonder what kind of appliance needs those kinds of qualities.
the 60GB comes with two games and two controllers, and is available right now, in stores, for only £349, and when compared to the 360 Elite, at £299, it is an absolute bargain! Even the Premium at £249, does not seem that great a deal by the time you have bought another controller and a couple of games.
I don't see how you can claim to be impartial when you make that last statement.
At the end of the day the Blu Ray disc is technologically superior to the HD DVD (in terms of storage and in terms of using Java for its interactive features, although admittedly they are still being developed), it was developed by more manufacturers, it is supported by more content producers, it has more content available, and it is also included in the PS3 which allows game developers more storag...
I would argue that the most successful game is the one which made the most profit. Unfortunately we will probably never know that answer. The marketing budget for Halo3 is huge, but I reckon they will make money from merchandising which will contribute to the bottom line. Resistance is a new franchise and doesn't have the momentum that Halo has, but will have lower development costs and 'incentives' from Sony. Halo's development budget would be far higher too, but again, the sales will offset...
I reckon that it is the 'tech savvy' customers who are buying the PS3 right now, those who know that the 60GB will be discontinued and those who will be getting that advice from the game stores who will be telling them the same.
In the next month the parents will be starting to look in the stores and will see the £299 PS3 vs the various choices (4 or more) of 360 on the shelf (They will only see sold out signs for the Wii, and none of Johnnys favourite games are on the Wii...
Interesting that the developer says they maxed out the performance and maxed out the DVD space.
It is difficult to run split screen with HD graphics I guess, the guy who developed Motorstorm said that was the reason they didn't include it, but I would have thought they could have done better with the single player though, when you look at Bioshock, Mass Effect etc.
The install base does bear relevance to the numbers of games sold and how successful a game is.
For example, if you agree that the 360 has 12 million users and that Halo 3 sold 3.5 million then that is a 30% (approx) penetration. Then if you agree that the PS3 has say 6 million users and Resistance sold 2 million then that is a 33% penetration.
Which is the most successful game?
We can of course, find 'facts' and figures to pretty much prove what...
I stated that we might get some 'new' innovation, rather than Microsoft's version. You did read that bit didn't you WilliamRLBaker?
Of course Microsoft has innovated, most successful businesses do. The issue is that taking MS core product aside, ie Windows, the other products it sells which integrate with the OS do so on an unfair level compared to would be competitors.
What would you want to do? Would you want to allow MS to make billions of profits and at the s...
