Question is why did they fund it?
If they funded it for the promise of VR for gaming, well that didn't change yet.
If they funded it so the company would stay independent, it looks like Oculus just "independently" decided to be bought.
Funny thing independence, if a little ironic in this case.
When you get down to it, the plan was for VR gaming and that is, as of right now, still proceeding. So in that way, ba...
Took $2 billion for Oculus to sell out.
Took you next to nothing. Congrats.
We gonna see "SONY MASTER RACE" from now on or what?
It's not like any of your previous support was strong enough to avoid that band wagon for more than a day. You just jumped right on. Well played.
So when you jump into what ever software FB designs for the OR they will do that.
FB has no control over the developers who make games for it.
@FriedGoat
Nice, anyone who doesn't have a knee-jerk reaction and jumps on the bandwagon is an automatic schill.
Because using any sort of any rational common sense about this is entirely inappropriate.
I don't care about Facebook in the least, but I do want an OR (I game on PC). So if nothing changes and I get one then why should Facebook bother me at all? If they do some how lock it down then I won't get it, simple.
What exactly do you think they will do?
The Rift isn't a stand alone device, its a fancy monitor. What influence beyond money could they possibly have. Are they going to order Oculus to make it crappy?
Dell doesn't influence what I see on my monitor. I can play whatever I want. What the game developers do is their business, like EA putting NFS ads in Battlefield.
How does it make an logical sense for FB to drop $2 billion on a VR com...

Bubbles for showing patience and common sense.
The rift is essentially a "monitor" so I'm not sure how or why you would lock it down. Seems to me that in order to make the most money you want your product for the most amount of people. Not sure how cutting out gamers is a way to increase the market, but I'm not familiar with "knee-jerk" math.
Until the Rift is officially ...
1. They weren't making an "investment".
2. They were funding the Rift to get consumer VR to the masses.
3. By all accounts that goal is still there.
So what do they really have to be upset about? Set aside the Facebook hate and consider this...
If Oculus follows their plan with this additional funding (Which they are saying they will do) what at this point do they have to upset about?
Kickstarte...
Who said it wasn't going to be use for PC games?
In fact why can't the Oculus be used for both?
Seeing as how Facebook is a big greedy corporation why would they not want the the Rift sold to PC gamers AND Facebook users?
What everybody is suggesting is that Facebook will cut out a potential revenue source because, reasons. It makes no logical sense that they would just use the Rift for Facebook when it can be used for more than that...
I actually can't, just seems strange to sabotage something you paid 2 billion dollars for.
Wouldn't that be on the developer of the game?
So because Dell made my monitor that must mean that Dell ads pollute my games right? No.
You do know Facebook bought just Oculus right, not every developer making games for it?
After a couple days people will calm down and real... SQUIRREL!!!!
We probably won't know because some idiot was spying on his girlfriend.
And that's the problem, humans are human. Seriously, humans screw up A LOT. We really try to convince ourselves that there are these special humans immune to the follies of us normal folk, but no, still imperfect humans.
Humans that really have no business with that much power and information. The act of passing our history on to succeeding generations is uniquely human. The act o...
@morganfell
But what if the Rift works fine with games?
We are talking about hardware. Not actual games. The Rift is more like a TV than a games console. and just like any peripheral when its released we'll know if it sucks.
I'm just not sure why you think things will actually change. Is Facebook going to make them put out a crappy product? They going to change the color? Who spends 2 billion on VR to make it suck?
An...
Rage and irony are getting the agrees this evening.
Well don't stop there! I want next weeks lotto numbers.
Who said that the Rift was only applicable to a single future?
Granted this was a crap deal, and I wish it hadn't happened, but what if it turns out fine?
Too few are really asking themselves this question and just throwing blind rage around.
It could all go to crap, but it could also...not.
@Pudge88
Prove me wrong, until then keep quiet.
Can't play Minecraft anymore. That'll be a banner slogan in the weeks to come by gamers who didn't give a crap about minecraft to begin with and now think it was crucial to VR's success.
There's justifiable fear and anger about this deal. I feel it to. However we only have guesses as to what might happen.
Is it worth giving up on it? We'll see. But unless someone comes in with a similar solution that doesn't require a PS4 well......
Sony is going to have a hard enough time getting their VR to work on the PS4. If "IF" they get around to making a PC version it will be years away.
Sony VR is for the PS4. It has to be designed around that one single piece of hardware, and even then its pushing the PS4 to its limits.
You better off waiting for the Rift, which hasn't actually been destroyed in the pits of hell yet.
I get the anger, but really nobody should be cancelling their development a few hours after an announcement.
If Notch did cancel Minecraft, then I got say that's a little hasty and probably pretty stupid. He has no idea how this will turn out after a few hours.
Listen, the anger is justified and may do irreparable harm to the Rift, but it also may not be as bad as everyone assumes. Just sayin, give it a day, a week, or even a month before completely writi...
Neither does the fact that it was going to be a completely different version since Notch didn't think Minecraft was right for VR to begin with.
Way to stand your ground by backing out of a deal you weren't that crazy about to begin with, Notch.
