Here's the problem, if they aren't going to focus on gaming then who is going to buy a Rift?

You said it yourself: "Oculus' primary focus will be where the money lies"

Who are the people with the money that will buy the Rift? Where is all the buzz for the Rift right now?

Gamers. PC gamers. With high end PCs. That clearly do NOT want FB ads/integration. Doing that or targeting a market that isn't sold on the Rift is a...

Where are you getting that number?

Seems to me that most consumer HMDs are going to aim for the $300 - $500 range at the beginning.

Their motives won't ever be clear if you won't listen anything that's been said.

Oculus is to remain autonomous.

If you absolutely refuse to believe that then there's nothing to say about it. I have my worries, but with nothing else to go on I give them the benefit of the doubt for the time being.

You are assuming that the kickstarter was to fund Oculus to develop VR and remain in control of that "vision" and it was...

1. You are completely wrong about what was said and it has since been clarified a dozen times.

2. Who is going to buy a Rift? Gamers. FB users barely know of the Rifts existence. So exactly why would FB target FB users instead of the market that already exists to launch a tech device that hasn't even been accepted yet?

You have completely misunderstood what is going on.

There is no arena(VR) in which to compete. Its a gimmick until the ma...

Probably pretty glad. Most the pressure is now squarely back on the Rift to mainstream VR.

Thing is they both need each other to succeed. Its Co-op until there is an actual market to compete in.

So FB dropped $2 billion on a device and for reasons unknown (likely evil) decided to NOT target the ONLY audience that will buy the Rift?

That's what you are saying? That a greedy corporation decided to waste $2 billion dollars for no reason at all?

You are wrong, just wrong.

Yet.

In the short term gamers are indeed the ONLY market, which is why they are focusing on that. To do otherwise would be suicide.

VR has many uses but you have to start somewhere, and that is gamers. Tech like this takes time.

It does NOT matter what they do in the future. Seriously, VR is still a gimmick until the mainstream picks it up.

Once that happens there will be competitors in the gaming market so it really won't matter what FB decides to do after that point.

And why would it have to be re-purposed? do you think it impossible that that multi-billion dollar developer might build the best youth center ever PLUS a shopping center?

What was the actual des...

Can someone sell me on this expansion?

I mean, since the updates, I'm liking D3 again. I wouldn't call myself a "hardcore" player and stick to single player mostly.

This expansion sounds really interesting, but I'm just not sure its $40 interesting.

Anyone got any thoughts on that?

Worst case:

Facebook makes Facerift and all our fears come true. Gamers refuse the product because of ads, Facebook, and NSA brain rape. Facebook blew $2 billion and VR is a joke. VR is ended for the near term and everybody goes home.

That could happen, sure. (not being sarcastic here)

What we know, right now:

Oculus intends to proceed as planned. Palmer says no ads or FB integration. Gaming still primary goal at this point. ...

Isn't that the point of Kickstarter? To "kick-start" a project?

Unless Facebook decides to drop VR gaming, backers got exactly what they wanted ultimately.

Listen, Kickstarter backers purchased actual products. $300 got you a DK1, and those were provided. Strings were attached.

That $2.5 from Kickstarter was never going to be enough. Nor was the $100 million from investors that follow. This is VR (hardware), not some indie game...

Notch saw the word "Facebook" and ran. That's it.

What do you expect him to say about Notch's knee jerk reaction?

Its not like Notch himself gave a detailed explanation other than "Facebook is creepy".

Notch didn't detail how Facebook and this "slimmed down" version of Minecraft were related, because he didn't have a clue.

Notch doesn't like Facebook, that's all there is t...

Notch put $10,000 toward their Kickstarter and that level of commitment and support vanished not even an hour after this announcement.

He didn't have to like this deal. But he didn't have to have to jump on this hate-train and act like he was backing out of some huge deal with Oculus.

Let's be real here, Notch backed out of a deal that was only talked about briefly and one he wasn't entirely enthused about to begin with.

So in...

@3-4-5

The deal took like 3 days to complete. I don't know how much they were talking about it prior, but probably not very long.

I'm certain they didn't know this during their kickstarter.

Things might have been very different if they knew years back the FB wanted to buy them.

But here's the thing, FB got interested because of the interest generated by Kickstarter. And while its easy to jump on that and "...

I gotta be honest, I knew the internet was a little "special", but I couldn't have predicted this much stupid.

I admit to being shocked and a bit concerned by the news, but the level some have taken this is beyond anything I could have expect.

Facebook only Rift? Really?

Anyhow, I agree with all you said.

In kickstarter you back projects NOT companies. It makes that very clear. You are not an investor by any stretch.

People backed VR and Oculus is still going to deliver VR. No amount of hyperbole is going to change that simple fact.

This was ALWAYS going to happen. Bringing VR to the masses takes far more than the $2.5 mil from Kickstarter and even the $100+ mil they got from investors. The Kickstarter was a success. VR is on its way.

The int...

Couple things people need to realize here...

1. The market right now, as in this very minute, is gamers. Others are coming on board but for right now Gamers on high end PCs are the ONLY ones that are going to buy the Rift.

2. Its for that reason the consumer version will be targeted at the ONLY market available. Nothing can change for the short term.

3. Long term, if it takes off and the main stream buys into it then the competitors start com...

You are saying they never planned to sell the Rift to the ONLY group willing to buy it.

I'm sorry, I guess I missed the memo saying VR is accepted by the mainstream and they are ready to buy. Given that amazing development I guess it makes total sense to ditch gamers.

Or:

We could come back to reality, wait a bit and know what will actually happen instead of wildly speculating.

The Rift hasn't gone away and Sony hasn...

And if you are wrong about applying their current business model, which until now has been software based and not hardware based.

What happens if EA, Valve, etc. decides to make a AAA game with Rift support?

Who said Facebook was going to lock down the the Rift when they can easily make money licensing the hardware for anyone who wants to use it?

Seriously limiting VR to FB games and users makes no sense AT ALL. Especially considering that ...
