I haven't heard Nier's score, but Xenogears is an amazing game, as is it's music. Yasunori Mitsuda is just unreal. He composed for Xenogears, and he also composed for Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross, two soundtracks which I strongly recommend you give a listen. Soma Bringer and Xenosaga are also great.

No goddamn way. The soundtrack sucked. Takeharu Ishimoto should not compose for major rpgs, just the most feeble, base, brainless soundtrack ever.
