No - your comparison is flawed. It is unoptimized code for the cell compared to optimized code for the Pentium without even taking the SPE's into account. Already some of the code that is tested with Mandelbrot and other mathematical sets runs more than 10 times faster than the first benchmarks...
But as a very clearly fanboy as possible comment from you - take old comments from first trials and pretend that is the absolute end results... try again - no cigar this time...
How long is a PS3 sitting on a shelve after news of one becoming available hits the street...

Yes I am a programmer. That's why it is clear that the MS comment of "not competitive" just does not make sense. It is about as non-competitive as OpenOffice is non competitive to Office.
From MS PR comments Java is not competitive with C#. And Linux is not competitive with Windows. And Notes is not competitive with Exchange. And Apache is not competitive with IIS. And and and. Horse manure. All the tools is available under Linux to compete with XNA. It is just PR BS....

So you have XNA (C# and DirectX)
On the Linux side you have C# (yeah C#, C++, Ruby, Python, C, C++, Java, Pascal, Basic etc etc etc) and OpenGL (which is similar to DirectX).
The difference is that with Linux you have access to source code you could only dream of with any MS project. Want to know how the networking really work? Just download the sourcecode. Wand to know how the comms drivers work to interface to the controllers? Just dow...

They did not believe what they said. They said it because they thought they will reach the 10Million mark before the others and are trying to spin it to influence people. They could just as well have said the first one to sell to a 90 year old Chinese lady with a black cat will win. Both statements is disconnected from reality. And at the tempo the Wii is flying - it will most probably get to 10 million first - and if not - it will most probably get to 15 million first.
So only a few lame 3rd party titles come out? So how does that compare with the PS2 that is still outselling the XB360?
But no 1st party titles anymore? So MS dropped it totally - and only a few companies even make something for it. The thing is dead. D.E.A.D. Dead. The PS2 will still be outselling the XB360 for the next two years at least in Japan. And it will still get more new titles - first party included. Heck - it may even outlive he XB360 if MS sees it failing as the fir...
But the first one shipped with MPEG2 and the new ones with VC-1, and the titles over two years will use another superfangled codec - and guess what - it will run on both formats after a firmware update. And with the PS3 even if it uses some obscure format you will be able to play it under Linux with VLC / Xine / Kaffeine / MPlayer etc.
And so what if the Toshiba model shipped witn no chip errors. The formware gets updated, the chips get improved - in the end - the two formats ...
The BC issue will be resolved - and it will look better in time. The EE+GS chip is only an interim measure until the full software BC is working properly.
So at the moment it is running on the embedded PS2 hardware. That hardware will be removed in a revision of the PS3 hardware - and then it will work as expected.
