Digital download services will find a niche market, but they will not be the standard consumer choice around the world for quality films, for at least 10 years yet.

Until most homes have extremely fast internet access, this kind of content delivery can never gain mass market acceptance. I can't comment on the US, but certainly here in the UK, theres still a huge mumber og households not even on the net and many still using dial up services. Even Broadband services in the UK are...

Well you have to say - PS3 hitting 4 million in 10 months in europe is pretty good going, and this year looks good for the playstation buisness.
Nintendo though - they are on a different planet all together! Unless the bottom falls out of their buisness very quickly, which is looking unlikely, its hard to see how any other platform can compete in terms of installed user base...

Excellent - I'm delighted at this new idea. To be honest, I had thought about boycotting the site because of the rampant hatred and impossablity of getting a decent discussion.

Your solution is excellent. You still get the traffic that the trolls generate, but those of us who can keep a civil toungue and make a point with a bit more civility, can finally have an adult conversation.

Maybe the site will be home to real gamers again!

Good point - and one I hadn't considered before! It'll certainly affect attach rates compared with some earlier gen machines!

Bubble for a thoughtful comment (they are a rare commodity these days...)

So - exactly how does showing sales figure rankings have any relevance with regards to 'attach rate' - or do you simply not understand what it means?

Just as a quick example - looking in the US market where the 360 has three times the install base of the PS3: A title like COD4 sold roughly 1.5 million copies on 360 and roughly 500K on PS3.
You can quite happily say the 360 verison outsold the PS3 one, but the actual attach rate, which is what this article is about, is ac...

These figures seem to get plucked from the air - wasn't it supposed to be 8.8 games per unit in a recent story?

There's no doubt that software sales are indeed good on the 360. Lets face it, its demographic is mainly core, who tend to buy more titles, and 2007 saw a truck load of great titles that had us all reaching for our wallets..

But its interesting to note his 'and relative to history' statement - i.e. attach rate AFTER two years on the market.
The l...

Shock! Horror!
This news just in!

Some people have problems configuring their internet and some ISP's are unreliable!!!!

It MUST be SONY's or Microsoft's fault! God damn their evil hearts....

I can only agree here with everyone elses sentiments - this game is incredibly adictive and I've spent far too long on it today! I think my wife is going to get very board of this... :)

Its difficult to not get ecited by a new game in the Star Wars Universe.
We've had so amny before of course, and many have been dismal, but every every poor game theres been a classic too and I rather hope this falls into the latter catagory!

Now what I really want, is a next gen version of Tie Fighter! No one makes space combat sims anymore! <sniff>

Errr. forgive me if I don't get too excited!
A port of fairly low key PC title? I sincerlerly doubt this will be any good.

Microsoft must and WILL have some exclusives to announce I'm sure - I worked on one at the end of last year, so unless they trash it there's at least one!:) Expect a few reasonable announcements at the Developers conference...

ahh, mr Baker!
I'm afraid your reputation ensured you got a disagree just for posting!

..and yet your post was perfectly fair and totally non-contentious, and very trues besides! So I find myself in the unusual position of giving you an agree, and being glad to do so.:)

It's a fair enough article, a bit overly-critical and obviously US-centric, but does make a good point!
Keeping the PS2 buisness going for as long as they have, has hurt the PS3 early adoption levels. I rather suspect that having shown such support to the previous platform will pay dividends in the long run with the average consumer, who will trust the brand to be supportted for a while. This will likely show more when the price falls another level and the more casual audience of the P...

@Snukadaman
No. I'm a game developer and long time game player who owns and enjoys all machines. I had a 360 and a ps3 since their respective launch, and I actually own considerably more games on the 360 than I do on the PS3.

I'm actually interested in games and the buisness of games, as its where I make my living. I am simply stating the rather suprising figures that for a while now each PS3 owner is buying more games than each 360 owner. I'd be perfectly happy to say ...

Hmmm, lets see now?

Xbox has been out 2 years and the avearge user has bought 8.8 games,

PS3 and Wii have been out 1 year and the average user has bought 5 games.

Its not rocket science to see that when these machines have been on the market for the same length of time, the attach rate figure will go higher.

The figure that really bears scruitiny is the weekly attach rate for the consoles i.e. what percentage of users bought a game e...

I did a similar calculation on world wide figures too and noted the anomaly! Yet if you calculate the figures for europe only, the attach rate is higher by an even bigger margin? This week its almost double and easy to spot with the PS3 having shifted more units of software this week despite having a significantly smaller installed user base...

It suprisingly looks like Japan is the key here.:) Hardly any 360 owners comparitively, but the ones that there are, buy lots of softwa...

Intresting set of figures again! :)

Since its rarely mentioned these days, I thought I'd calculate the attach rate for each format based on this weeks US sales, i.e the percentage of platform holders who bought a game this week...

The results are not what you might have been led to believe by some on the site, and have been consistant for the last 8 weeks now..

360 - 7.56%
PS3 - 9.40%
DS - 2.83%
Wii - 8.34%
PS2 - 1.13% ...

Why has no one questioned this?
This is simply idle specualtion based on a financial report, or don't people read the stories anymore?

There is no official announcement from Ubisoft on this title at all.
It simply expected to make revenue from this title within 2008 fiscal year...

If your game comes out at the end of march, then the bulk of your earnings for it WOULD come in the finacial year that starts in April?

Unless there is a st...

Great - and about time too!
I've been very jealous of our Japanese friends having this game, as I've alweays loved the fun 'Hot Shot' series.
It reviewed very well from Famitsu too, so while I don't expect a revolution, I do expect to be as entertained as I have by the previous iterations!
