As far as I'm concerned FFVI is far and away the best FF and tied with Chrono Trigger as the best RPG's to be made to date.
That being said.
Im actually enjoying FFXIII. I like it better than X, and they are in the same style so more comparable.
The graphics and motion are as smooth as silk. Music, top notch.
You just have to accept that FFXiii is trying to do something different in terms of story. If you accept it and let it tak...
The game may not look that great as compared to a recent JRPG release, but the soundtrack is good, and this game is pretty interesting...It has something most games don't have anymore.

Im really liking both games. ROF has been beat up in the reviews (even more than FFXIII perhaps due to the "this is not for everybody" issue).
ROF has an interesting art design, soundtrack, wickedly strategic battle system...and the humor...well...This game is VERY Japanese.
FFXIII, has some bright spots too. Absolutely beautiful enviroments. The reviews did not express that enough. Good soundtrack. Great character design. A new spin on battle.......

From a developer's standpoint, here is how it probably goes down.
1) Marketing throws them a folder saying key demographic is 15-28 or whatever...(Young men)
2) %of them that are homosexual as in standard proportions to the whole population...(i dunno...like 10% or something like that?)
3) Hmmm small number says CEO.
4) Yeah, lets stick with the 18 year old sexual fantasy and ...
I loved Xenogears, but Im not sure that would be a game to tell a newbie to play.
As it stands today. I would tell someone to go play FFX to get a feel for what RPG's are about. (By far not my favorite FF)
Good story, easy battle. Then we can work up from there.

Yes they are all Final Fantasy characters developed from SE, and thus, they have some similar flavor.
BUT, I do think the character design in this one is excellent.
They are very expensive to develop.
Good grief, the game is not that bad.
Its a slightly above average JRPG game. No more no less. And since even average JRPG games have been in limited supply this generation, Im enjoying the game.
I hope From Software does a game in the same "style" as Demon's Souls 2, but not a sequal. What made Demon's Souls so great was its originality and the strict rules it demands you abide by.
I would hate From to feel binded to the rules it set in Demon's Souls 1.
Just give me a game that manages to create that tense feeling all the way through the game being difficult but not cheap. After that...surprise me.

If Square can figure out what made those games truely magical (and obviously they are...we still talk about them 15 years later), then maybe they can enter the realm of truely excellent games as opposed to just solid offerings. FFXIII is a solid offering, but it just lacks a bit in the whole...well...play FFV...
Somebody, maybe its SE, can be the ones to figure out how to tell a compelling story with freedom and choice.
Is FFXIII a bad game? Certainly not.
Its just a different spin on the JRPG, and if you give it a shot, then you might like it.
Yes its linear. As linear as FFX, but in this case we have been playing games like Fallout 3 and Dragon Age and we are very used to having choice. This is probably the biggest shock because it is so against the flow of how Rpg's in general have been trending.
The battle systems is kinda cool once you get the hang of it...
The reviews have probably been a bit harsh on FFXIII. I've been a long time RPG fan and a few things come to mind.
1) Yes, the game is linear. Woah, In this day and age, Square might have been more aware of us spolied brats that have been playing Fallout 3, Dragon Age, and Oblivion for the last 3 years. We like freedom.
I went into this experience with an open mind, and if you do so, chances are you will not be dissapointed if you can ever get over the linear ...
You do realize that many of the Obsedian guys were originally from Black Isles that made the first two Fallout games which many regard as far as story and humor go far better games?
Assuming they can keep up the gallows humor and get the game to run smoothly, it should be a great game.
I miss Final Fantasy VI.

Going from IX to X was a big change not just in platforms.
Meh, its FF, its not like the game is going to suck. It just might not be the best, and I need a straight up JRPG fix. Haven't had one in a long time.

Really, any charachter in FFVI would be great on that list. The character design and arcs of those characters were the best the series has offered. Ever.
And, come on. "Black Mage" from FF1 is awesome! How could that not make the list?

The Meerkat: Have you picked up a copy of FFVI? Though it is still a save the world kinda game like most JRPG's are, it...well....It is the best JRPG out there, with the exception of Chrono Trigger.
JRPG developers, specifically Square, in an effort to "tell a more compelling story" is that they have forsaken the exploration aspect of the RPG. Earlier games had it.
One day...I hope, a JRPG or WRPG developer will realize that if they bring the RPG...
Greatest game ever? I can't think of any game that can hold that title outright. Its too subjective.
