If this system (either the portable or home version) ships without the ability to play physical games, whether those are disc-based or cartridge-based, it will fail. I know Nintendo would love to do away with physical games, so they could keep most of the profit from digital sales, but if they go ahead with something like this, the new systems will bomb hard.
Look at the Wii U; no internal HDD, a measly 32gb of flash storage, yet Nintendo expects people to buy digital games ...
To be honest, this game has a metascore of 42, and most reviews are in the 3-6 range. There are always going to be outlier scores, on the high and low end. Thus happens to be a low one, and the reviewer obviously found no redeeming qualities in the game.
Regardless of all that, it's pretty clear that Devils Third is at best a mediocre game, and at worst a broken mess. Either way, not worth most people's time.
No, it really isn't an "amazing deal". For what you get in the console, it should be $200 or less NEW, refurbished should be about $150 or less. The system doesn't even have an internal HDD, whereas PS3 and 360 consoles are readily available with 320gb or 500gb hard drives at this point, for around the same price. There just isn't enough inside the Wii U to make it worth the price.
I agree with you, the game looks great! I'm probably just going to buy the discounted PSN version for $14 on sale, then if I really like it, I'll double dip and get the retail version later, when it comes out. Did this with Shovel Knight, I have the physical version preordered from BB and already own the digital version for the PS4 and Vita.
And Amazon has Shovel Knight for PS4 discounted to 19.99 (normally 24.99) right now, great deal!
@ quanleylfc - The Wii did a huge amount of damage to Nintendo's reputation; sure it caught on big for a while, but it ultimately never delivered on its promise. The waggle gimmick controller was terrible, and the system had very poor specs, barely above the Gamecube. And look at the premature end of the Wii's lifespan, it died YEARS before the 360 and PS3, when people completely lost interest in the gimmick.
So no, trying to argue that the Wii was successful is just...
Those are great suggestions. However, you do know that most of that will never happen? Just starting with #1, Nintendo is unwilling to put the investment into their gaming hardware to make it competitive; they prefer to make low-end hardware, then add a gimmick to spur sales. They are simply unwilling to open their wallets and invest in higher-end (or even mid-tier) hardware.
As for the rest of your suggestions, again good ideas, but it is very doubtful that Nintendo will ...
LOL good point, we know how those two worked out.
Top 5 things the NX needs to succeed:
1) NO GIMMICKS (both Wii and Wii U were ruined by them)
2) Traditional controller
3) Cutting edge specifications (CPU, GPU, RAM, HDD, etc.)
4) Full feature set (don't leave out commonly expected features like an ethernet port and internal HDD just to save a few bucks in manufacturing costs)
5) Robust 3rd party support
Unfortunately, it is doubtful that the above will happen; Nintendo ha...
No, none of which is the "fault of THE DEVELOPERS", but all of which is the fault of NINTENDO, for not building a console that can handle current generation games. This has absolutely nothing to do with devs being "lazy", but everything to do with Nintendo betting heavily (once again) on a gimmick, and failing. Devs gave up on the Wii U when they realized that they'd have to completely redo their games to run on much lower spec hardware, making it not worth the hassle...
Looking forward to the update to this fantastic game, I preordered the physical PS4 version of Shovel Knight from Best Buy, and it comes with the Plague Knight update.
@ wonderfulmonkeyman - "Saying that it can't handle PS360 ports is a flat-out lie, Chiller. It handles games like Ghosts perfectly fine and would easily have supported the extra content as well."
From Eurogamer:
"So, the single-player campaign clearly shows an advantage to the 360, with the PS3 not too far behind in many scenes, and the Wii U failing to approach the same level of performance across the board."
No, the ...
You overlooked the fact that, no matter how much Nintendo spends to get ports, those ports can never match the other two consoles. The Wii U simply doesn't have strong enough specs (like a tiny 2gb of RAM), and is missing major features (like a real internal HDD, instead of a tiny amount of flash storage). It just can't handle the ports.
Indies are really the only thing that the Wii U can run well, in terms of this generation's games. The Wii U is really more p...
Most reviews are around the 5 mark, and Metacritic score is 41. Not really "all over the place". It sounds like a pretty mediocre game, at best.
Except, they're only "1st" in your own mind. In reality, they aren't "1st" in software, toys, handhelds, and certainly not profits for the last FOUR years, eh? They're a distant third this generation, with a poorly-designed, gimmicky, feature-lacking, underpowered console, and a pitiful amount of games considering how long their system has been on the market.
You better hope the NX breaks the pattern of gimmicks tied to cheap hardware, becaus...
I think the motion controls with the Wii U gamepad look like a very awkward, annoying way to play the game. Why Nintendo feels they must force some kind of gimmick control method on so many games is a mystery to many people. Just look at Kirby's Rainbow Curse, completely ruined because they force you to play the entire game on the gamepad, and you can't even enjoy the game on the big screen.
No wonder Nintendo is so unpopular these days, they really are completely ...
It really is sad that Nintendo didn't even integrate an ethernet port into the Wii U. Just one of many features they left out of the base console, to accommodate the high cost of the gamepad. How much would it have cost to just build the port into the console? Probably a buck or two, certainly way less than $5. How cheap can they get with this stuff?
Wow it looks really awkward trying to control the ship with the gamepad motion controls. Would be better to just use a regular controller for the game, the pad is too bulky and annoying. Graphics are adequate for this type of game, but they did seem choppy in places.
Hopefully they're still working on the game, and it will get better before it releases.
@ _Cafe - Don't bother trying to reason with RPGrinder, he's a diehard Nintendo fan who is bitter about the failure of the Wii U. He downplays ALL other consoles, and only praises or defends the Wii U (as you pointed out). That's why his bubbles are gradually slipping away, he had 10 recently and is now down to 6. (How he got 10 to begin with is a mystery to everyone, lol).
No, they lost all 3rd party developers when the devs realized that the Wii U was too underpowered and lacking in features to adequately handle current generation games. It's as simple as that, no need to try to pin the blame on anyone else but Nintendo itself.
Let's hope that Nintendo learns from their past mistakes, and actually puts some solid effort into the design of their next console; if they don't, they might as well just not bother. Gimmicks alone aren...
Keep up the trolling, your bubbles will be gone in no time.
